Got my first smoker for Christmas and was just wondering where some of you grillmasters/smokers buy your meat from?

I definitely would be interested in buying in bulk. Just trying to find out where some of you get the best deals on meat (ribs, pork butts, etc.)

I appreciate any advice thrown my way.

I normally get it at Sams Club, can get two pretty large pork butts pretty reasonably priced. That is normally the easiest meat to smoke as well, haven't screwed it up yet.

Depends on what you have. Butcher is best. I usually get it from Sam's.

If you're interesting in buying in bulk, I'd talk to specific butchers in your area about discounts for bulk purchases. Other than that, Costco/Sam's type places would probably be your best bet.

For deals, check the circulars. Occasionally, I'll find ridiculously good prices on brisket, butt, and ribs at our Price Chopper and load up.

Mostly though, I use my local butchers, McGonigles, Local Pig, and Broadway, but they are usually more expensive (sometimes considerably) that your chain grocer or Costco/Sam's.

If you want to buy competition grade stuff, KC United is right about McGonigles and Local Pig. Dodge City Beef in Shawnee, KS has excellent beef, and Curt's Famous Meats in Independence, MO is an old school butcher with great stuff too. They're all pricey, so don't expect to pay Price Chopper prices.

What the fuck? Dodge City Beef in Shawnee? I'm pretty sure there isn't a Dodge City Beef in Dodge City.

Appreciate the help guys.

I've already done some empty smokes, smoked some chicken legs/thighs, and smoked some bacon.

Just wanted to see where all of you get your meat from. Definitely understand about paying more from butchers or places like McGonigles.

Of the grocers in the area, I think Hen House stocks the highest quality proteins. Unfortunately, there isn't one real close to me so I don't get there much.

Speaking of butcher prices, I ordered my Thanksgiving turkey from McGonigles this year and maybe I overlooked the $$$ per lb on the order form but I nearly shat my pants when I went to pick it up and it was $4 per lb. It was a $16 lb turkey. It was a fresh, free range turkey that was delicious, but fuck me, my inlaws aren't worth anywhere close to a $65 turkey.

You should have cooked them a $20 Butterball and made them eat off of that plate.

I see your location is Lawrence. Drive to Steve's Meat Market in DeSoto. They butcher live animals on-site four days a week and sell the meat in the retail store in the front. You can get any cut of meat and it's all really fresh.

Costco is the only legitimate, consistent option, IMO.
