My kid needs a car. I want to spend no more than 5500. I've always been partial to hondas, but I find them to be vastly overpriced, especially in this particular dollar range. And toyotas, forget about it. I am finding a lot of seemingly very nice pontiac products in this dollar range, with not too many miles. G6's, grand prixs, etc. I've never been a pontiac man, but they look like really nice cars with a reliable drivetrain.

The kid like subarus and mazdas, but I doubt I'm going to find much for that money.

I'm also considering a few mustangs, but don't know too much about them.

so cp, what kind of car would you be looking for?

Ask any mechanic about Buicks 3.8 liter V6 and they'll tell you its pretty much bulletproof... the kid may not like a Buicks lines, but it will pretty much never let him, or you, down.

I put over 300,000 miles on a LeSabre.

Just change the oil.

Because they hate me. Had a Grand Prix and a G6 and I loved them both.

That engine was available in Grand Prix's. I'll vouch for the motor. Mine was a champ.

I'd stay away from Mustangs unless they changed them to front wheel drive. I've been a Pontiac man, and as long as you take care of them, they are great. The interior isn't top of the line, but you're not looking for top of the line prices. I wish I hadn't sold either one I've owned. Sunfire's are junk though, don't buy those.

I don't know what they are now, but in the 90s and early 2000's, when Mustangs started getting cheaper everyone bought their kid one, and almost everybody's kid wrecked one. So at least a few years ago, insurance was out-fucking-rageous.

I'd grab a couple VINs from a few cars and see what they're running.

I'd recommend a Honda Civic or Accord or a Toyota Corolla or Camry.

They're pretty cheap to buy, reliable, easy and cheap to maintain/repair, and cheap on gas.

Legitimately a win all around for a young kid on his first car. He can go for looks on his next car- the one he pays for himself.

I'd recommend a Honda Civic or Accord or a Toyota Corolla or Camry.

When I was looking for a car for my son a couple of years ago, all of those cars you listed had a highly inflated price or had been heavily modified (Civics primarily) or were on a salvage title. A lot of the Hondas were on second engines. I couldn't find a single one I felt comfortable with.

That's just my recommendation, as my experience has been good.

I owned a Civic in which the transmission took a shit at 240,000 miles and a Camry with 164,000 miles now that drives like a champ. I put about 100,000 miles between the two and only unscheduled maintenance was a hose on the Civic and an oxygen sensor and a front cover oil leak on the Camry. All in all about 1 hour worth of work on two high mileage vehicles. Ain't too shabby.

ThaVirus
01-05-2015, 12:52 PM
It's important to note that Civic I first owned was a piece of shit rust bucket too. It was obvious the previous owners didn't take care of it at all.

Still made it over 200,000 miles. That's pretty good for a lemon. No telling how long I'd have driven that thing had it been taken care of..

My wife has a 2006 CR-V that we bought new and her folks drive nothing but Accords, so I have nothing against Hondas. It just that every time one of these threads come up it's always "Buy a Honda or Toyota". It's just that in my experience (and apparently Brock's), that cheap Honda is pretty mythical. The stuff that is out there for < $5000 is pretty much trashed.

It probably depends on area though.

Definitely, as well as just personal opinion.

I will personally always recommend Hondas and Toyotas to anyone looking to get a kid his first car. In my opinion, kids shouldn't be driving cars that as too expensive unless they've bought it themselves. Plus, we all know kids drive their cars to shit when they first get them. Best to have something that gets good gas mileage and won't cost much on insurance or repair/maintenance.

As a young man, you're kinda fucked when it comes to insurance if the car is even slightly decent.

Shit, I had a 4 cylinder Camaro when I was 20 and the insurance was more than the payment. It's worse now (said as the father of two under 21 boys).

The best cars for insurance are cars that kids don't typically drive (like Buick). Any "sporty" car will be a killer.

A lot of kids own Civics so the insurance is really high. My wife's CR-V has really cheap insurance but the same year Civic was a lot more expensive. Since my son is a snowboarder, we went with an Impreza for him. The insurance isn't exactly cheap but it was better than a lot of cars.

I have an 08 Mazda3 with the 2 liter motor. I'm at 92k on that car.

It has needed zero repairs. It has had a couple minor recalls.

I've only had to do routine maintenance on it.

The cabin air filters on them are in a shit location and really affect how well the A/C works. So you will have to replace those every couple of years (maybe more depending on where it is driven).

Unf., he's going to arkansas to be a razorback so I don't know if that would work.

It won't if he won't be living with you (and prepare yourself for the bill).

When we tried to add the kids as secondary drivers, our insurance company moved them to secondary drivers on the most expensive car. It was cheaper to put them as primary drivers on their own cheap cars and leave them off of our cars.

My oldest is at college 3.5 hours away. We couldn't afford the cost of the insurance for him to have his car at college so he does without (lives on campus and has friends with cars). It's a pain sometimes to have to go get him for vacations and such. We just put his car in storage while he is at school and take the insurance off, so can save a little money that way.

I've replaced quite a few plastic upper plenums on them but that's about it. They ran an egr port right against a plastic intake. Lol. New one comes with a new smaller egr port to install. And the plastic coolant elbows above the water pump. They make those aluminum now.w

3.8 is the best motor GM ever made. Kid is running a 99 Bonneville while at college with 238k on it. Motor is the only thing not falling apart at this point.

I got to say the 4.3..had 1 in my 94 S-10 and put 500,000 on it just changing oil..and the other regular maintenance..I did replace head gaskets at 300,000 but that was just a precaution and thought that was a lot cheaper than buying a new truck

My uncle still has his 95 S-10 with a 4.3 and he has around 600,000 on it..just changing oil..regular maintenance..we did have to replace head gaskets on it twice..first time at 200,000 and again at 300,000

What do you guys think of Ford Taurus in the 1998-2001 range?
Also, Chevy Malibu around 1999?

If the tires stuck out far enough to use for chairs and it had graphics you'd be in.

I'd take the Tore-ass over that Malibu eight days a week, that Ford was a decent car for the money, still tons of them driving around.

The Taurus 3.0 dohc was a piece of shit IMO.

The 3.0 ohv was a pretty good motor in those years . The heater cores love to plug up around here due to the idiotic design.

just get an 08 335i and throw a tune on it - you will be faster than 90% of what's out there on the road.

very fair - and that's a huge gripe - though things don't go wrong too often - if and when they do - you can face a $900 - 2k repair VERY easily - that's a huge complaint of mine - but I truly think BMW are a tad more reliable than an Audi - yet nowhere near a Japanese when referencing reliability - It's hard to beat a Honda or Toyota if you're looking for value and dependability. I just happen to love cars and it's the only thing I TRULY have in my life. HA HA anyhow - good luck to you - by the way did you actually buy anything yet?

had way more problems w. audis than I ever have w/ ANY of my BMW's - and I've owned two Audi's and four BMW's - the main thing BMW does shitty are Lamps - Like headlights - seriously that's all that I've had go wrong w/ my current two - The Audi's are what were constantly breaking.

No, they were both bland shit mobiles at the time (the newer models of both are much better cars now).

I had a 96 Grand Am back then. It was tinted the fuck out, had a pair of 12's, and was the dark green color (which was an awesome color). I busted my ass to buy that car.

It's no different than any other car.

Just pay attention to how you take it apart, fix whatever's wrong, and then put it back together.

Sauto, what problems should I be on the lookout for?

Which v6?

I believe it to be a 3.9.

SAUTO
02-05-2015, 09:55 PM
3.9 is a good motor by that time. Some had intake vacuum leaks but if it was one of them fel pro makes a problem solver that is awesome. Not sure what year they fixed it.

Other than that I can't really think of anything.

This thing runs good, but at times I think I hear an exhaust leak. One thing I've read about these engines is that the exhaust manifolds are prone to cracking. I'll be crawling all over it this weekend.

Check the passenger side.

I have replaced a passenger side or two in the past now that you mention it...

Get it aligned. Even if it needs nothing it is cheaper than tires. With that many miles it probably needs it.

I don't know anything about mustangs but most of the time the exhaust leaks I've had have been past the manifold.
