In a horrific case of sibling-on-sibling violence, a 15-year-old girl and her younger sister have been arrested in the fatal shooting of their 16-year-old brother in Florida.
Misty “Ariel” Renee Kornegay, helped by her 11-year-old sister, allegedly shot their brother Monday with a gun their parents had kept locked in their White Springs home, according to The Gainesville Sun.
The girls went to nearby High Springs police after the slaying and reported that the boy was dead, officials said.
Officers found the teen dead at the home at 1205 Sophie Drive, said Murray Smith, a Columbia Sheriff’s Office spokesman. The boy, who was a student at Columbia County High School, was not identified.
Kornegay, who had withdrawn from the school for disciplinary reasons, took the weapon from a room that their parents had locked, Smith said, according to The Gainesville Sun.
Her sister “somehow assisted Ariel, but she didn’t pull the trigger,” Smith said.
A 3-year-old sibling who was at the home at the time of the shooting was placed in protective custody.
Police and the Department of Children and Families were investigating what led to the shooting.
Then parents – Keith J. Kornegay, 37, and Misty S. Kornegay, 32 – were charged with with failure to supervise in treatment of children.
Keith, a truck driver, was accompanied by his wife on a trip, Smith said.
Police say a 15-year-old girl held in the killing of her 16-year-old brother has accused her family of years of physical and sexual abuse..
Police documents released Wednesday said the girl's uncle was convicted of molesting her in 2010. They also say the children's mother discovered the siblings having sex.
Law enforcement officials said they discovered the teen's body late Monday night at the family home in rural White Springs in north Florida.
After the shooting, the girl told investigators that her parents routinely kept her locked in a room with only a blanket and a bucket to urinate in.
