I actually know a guy who walks a little further than that and has for at least ten years.

After this story came out a regional scumbag no producer American set up a fundme to get this guy a car. The problem is he is going to use any "extra" to pay his own fines and get himself a car too.

It is incredibly impressive that someone walks that far for a mediocre job. I respect it slot.

Public Transportation has such a negative conatation yet in the biggest cities, it's such a given it's never even discussed. Personally, I love it, especially the subway. I rode the city bus in the 90's for years and it was awesome.

I agree. In big urban areas its a necessity.

Not trying to be negative. I'm just baffled why a person would walk miles instead of take public transportation to work? We humans generally take the easier way out.

If you'd read the story you'd see that he took as much public transportation that he could. It's largely unavailable in Detroit and he lived rent free in the suburbs where his girlfriend inherited a home. He had no other option.

10.55 an hour after working at the same place for over 10 years. What a shit head employer he has.

So, he lived rent free and didn't have a car payment. Seems incredibly fishy that in 10 years he couldn't save up enough money to buy a piece of shit car to drive to work.

I dunno, there had to be other options, right? Over the course of a decade? ZERO $10/hr jobs off a public transportation route in the past decade, or not being able to save a few bucks a day over the course of a year or two, and he's either that stubborn or his girlfriend was just fine with him wasting 18 hours a day to make $80 before taxes?

She better not ask to borrow the car.

I am talking about a guy I know not the one in Detroit in the story.
Positive.. I saw him and talked to him for a minute at his job last night. He works night shift and leaves work at 6am. I see him a lot of mornings before 8 on my way to work and have given him a ride the last few miles before.

He is 62. ...and hustles his ass off at work. Scurries like he is hopped up on Mountain Dew the entire time..

I asked him last year why he walks that far and he said something like "the situation at home necessitates that I work". His wife apparently won't move closer and he must like his job because there are options closer.

I have a bit of a hard time believing this.

A good runner can run a mile in 3:50.

A walker it could be as much as 20 min.

so give him 15 minutes x 22 miles = 330 minutes / 60min = 5.5 hours one way.

that is 11 hours a day to work 5 days a week. for 10 years

Not saying it can't be done- but that is almost half the day for an 8 hour shift.

He is either lying, a very fast walker or crazy.

So if it is 21 total that is still 2.75 hours one way IF he did not use public transportation.

still difficult for me.

21 total from what I have read, I think I walk a mile in under 20 minutes. He has to take some sort of additional transportation.

I am fine with the money and the car though being given. He did not ask for it. If he created the sites himself that is different. Some stranger doing it?

Assuming 14 miles per minute which is extremely fast for walking, 21 miles takes close to 5 hours.

A Michigan man, whose story of perseverance inspired a massive outpouring of financial support, said he now fears that money has made him a target for violence.

Detroit Police told the Detroit Free Press they helped James Robertson, 56, move to an undisclosed location, after he told them he didn't feel safe. Robertson's story about how he walked 21 miles to and from work everyday inspired donations of $350,000 and a new car.

"We had a meeting with him (and) he expressed interest that he did not feel safe," Detroit police Capt. Aric Tosqui said.

Police said Robertson has been asked for money since his windfall. His decision to seek a safer location was motivated in part by news last week that an 86-year-old Detroit man was murdered shortly after he apparently won $20,000 in the lottery, according to the Free Press.

You're probably right. But the Detroit walker already said he hired a financial adviser in his public statement. His money is somewhere protected/invested. People don't just have hordes of cash laying around (unless your Dane and then it's piles of blow and cash). But no one said criminals are smart.
