We are driving down to KC and I usually go to Gates, but want to try something different this time around.

I'm looking to go to the absolute best BBQ joint in the KC area for dinner tonight and figured you guys would know best. Maybe a few of you want to come out and eat with us.

What say you, CP?

(The search function is off or I'd use it.)

You should go to Oklahoma Joes and get carryout sandwiches or meat then swing by jack stack and grab some hickory pit beans and cheesy corn. Once you acquire the items take them to your location and pair it with gates extra hot sauce.

you should probably grab the sides first via carry out in martin city then swing by Joes KC up on Roe. Joes sides suck for the most part. The onion rings are good and the fries are okay but the other is just meh

Jack Stack has great sides but the meat is somewhat lacking to me personally  a bit bland

If you want to sit down and be served go to Jack Stack. If you want carry out/cafeteria style go to Oklahoma Joes (aka Joes KC). Being served or cafeteria style should be your only determining factor because both are excellent.

Buy into the hype and A'sphere of that Jack Stack.

I will say this much - Gates has that character appeal. I saw a large black lady sit down and literally break her wooden chair in the Gate's dinning-room, this was pre-game vs Bengals - Dick V's last game - It was hilarious.

The beans at Q39 are as good as I have had anywhere. Not sure about their other sides.

I had their mixed plate with brisket, pulled pork and smoked chicken. All tremendous.

The sauce is also great. I liked it better than Gates, personally. Not so watery.

I will go back and get their burnt ends. My only complaint is you can't get a plate with burnt ends and pulled pork. If I had my way that's all I'd eat.

It's a sit-down and serve place so fuck Jack Stack's forever, IMO.

THIS

If you are with buddies and want a sit-down restaurant with a bar in it, it's great, too. And close to the other Westport bars. But mostly the BBQ here is amazing and the prices not too steep. I cut through that sliced brisket effortlessly with my fork.

It's really interesting that middle class white dudes are dominating BBQ in KC.

It IS interesting. The competition style is becoming the standard for the city, and that's mostly the fault of the traditional African-American owned bbq joints lapsing into inconsistency. Even the venerable LC's is at the point where it rests on its laurels as much as Arthur Bryant's and Gates do. At least there's Big T's still putting an effort into things.

I don't understand all the love for Jack Stack. I've eaten at multiple locations and the meat was always overcooked and dry. The original Smoke Stack in Martin City was amazing but I don't if it's even still around.

Personally, I've never had a bad meal at Zarda's and always eat there when in town. I used to love Hayward's and Rosedale but I have no idea if they're good anymore. Gates was always hit and miss and I never liked Bryant's, especially their sauce because it had too much brown sugar for my taste.

At the last BBQ competition in Santa Monica, LC's was the best BBQ by far out of all of the vendors, which came from all over the country including Texas, the Carolina's, Memphis and more.

It's interesting, but the Godfather of KC BBQ doesn't own a restaurant. He's won every award in every corner of the nation and consults BBQ restaurant owners. Dick Mays (not the Godfather) was the man that started the road away from the likes of Arthur Bryant's and Gates. He doesn't get enough credit, but you see it in really good KC BBQ.

Ordering BBQ at a gas station doesn't really strike me as yuppie... granted, there's the OP restaurant, but I don't think that's where the hype originated.

I appreciate OK Joe's for the meat, as they let it stand on its own without drenching everything in sauce... as opposed to Gates, which has better sauce anyway, IMO.

Well, I'm glad that Anthony Bourdain thinks so highly of a second tier KC BBQ place that it's one of his 13 places to eat. That's also not a legitimate argument. And when talking about Joe's I'm not talking about the ambiance of the gas station, but the extent to which it has been hyped as the greatest thing ever, especially by people 25-45, despite not doing much to separate itself. It's not bad by any means, but aside from their pulled pork, they really don't do much all that well.

Zarda's is OK, but nothing special. Can't day as though I've ever had a bad meal there but can't say as though I've had a great meal there either.

It really depends on what you are wanting. For example if you want ribs go with Arthur Bryant's (original location and use the bold and spicy sauce not the regular), Jack Stack or OK Joe's. Jack Stack dies everything will to excellent. Most other places have one or two items they do really well.

My sister's Rehearsal Dinner was at Jack Stack on 95th and Metcalf. I was really disappointed in the food. On our next visit, we went to the downtown location, which was a little better but the cigarette smoke pretty much ruined the meal.

My parents like it so we've had it as dine in and carry out at the Metcalf location several times over the years. I've never had, what I'd call anyway, a good meal, nor have I been impressed. The sides have always been decent but the meat unimpressive.

I guess everyone has different tastes.

I've only been their twice. One time I had the ribs and, if the ribs are that damned good on a regular basis than they need to be mentioned as one of the premiere rib joints in town. I hesitate to mention them in that catagory just because it was only one time. But man if that is consistent......

I'll have to hit up Q39 next time I'm in town, which may be this summer. Oh, and Joe's KC, too. I've never had it.

Martin City Jack Stack is still around but they aren't any better than the OP location. They changed meat vendors several years ago and have sucked since then. Hayward's went to shit but someone said a new owner is making it better.

Jack Stack probably has the best sides in the business but their meat sucks for flavor.

95th and Metcalf was the worst for me. Clay and I hit up one in an industrial district that was the only one I ate at before trying OP. Won't go back. Industrial or bust for me. My very favorite, and it was Clay's too. I'm very interested in Q39 now.

I disagree with this quite a bit. I've never had a better expression of the competition style rib in a bbq restaurant than Joe's. Their chicken, too, is top-tier nationally.

The best part about Jack Stack is that you can ship it anywhere in the country. I never actually eat there myself.

I live a couple minutes from Joe's Olathe so it's my favorite by default. But then again I love everything there, whether it's the fries or the rings or the ribs or the burnt ends or the z-man or the sausage or the pulled pork or the gumbo.

It wasn't that pricey at all, actually.

Most plates are around 15 bucks and they give you a lot of food. The full rack was the most expensive thing i saw and it was 30 bucks. I can usually eat a full rack when hungry and I barely finished half of it and half the sides (which were all amazing...BBs, pot salad, veggies).

Amazing cheesecake, too.

I completely recommend everyone to try it.

My ONLY complaint was that I called just after 1 to make my reservation and they told me the soonest was gonna be 830...when we got there they didn't have my reservation at all...but promptly seated us at 8pm...even though the place had a huge live out the door.

Not yet. If the weather shows signs of mid-winter warm up for the next few weeks, I may go ahead and come in the 3rd or 4th week of February.

If it's about to go back to cold as shit, I'm not driving that way until late March/early April.

Cool let me know so I can buy you an Alex Smith jersey.

I was at Hi Dive last night

Out slaying Westport whores by the dozen I'm sure..

I could almost throw a rock and hit Hi Dive from home.

They just opened a new place there on the corner called Mo Brew. Haven't been there yet though. Did you check it out?

Been there once it was a good time. I'm a huge fan of Fric & Frac. Ok good and 2 for 1 mixed drinks after 9.

The Hi Dive used to be a Minsky's too. That was a heartbreaker..

I hear ya on the burnt ends being cubed. But who, other than Gates, doesn't cube it? My favorite burnt ends are Gates because theirs is pulled not cubed.

Arthur Bryant's. Not my favorite overall BBQ restaurant in KC, but their burnt ends are probably my favorite BBQ entree of all time. Of course, I love their sauce. I understand a lot of people don't.

I love Gates but gosh damn it can they give a guy some hot fries without having to be a ****ing prick and DEMAND HOT FRIES?

Every time I go to the Gates on Main St. I have to wait 10 minutes for my fries to cool down enough to eat them.

By the way, I notice the dinner at Q39 is more expensive. Are the portions bigger? Only been there for lunch.

1) You shouldn't have noted that; now Reaper will go launch an RPG at the joint before I get to feast there.

2) I swear to all that is holy, we had the best BBQ baked beans on all of God's earth when I worked at Bobby Bells as a kid. Slow cooked with brown sugar, molasses, and rub, then the cooks would chop-up the ends of the brisket, sausage, and ham, mix it in, and let it get nice and thick in serving pot.

Haha, I've been to Q39. It's a top 5 place in KC for me on the merits of how well cooked everything is. The flavor profiles are pretty sweet on the whole, however, which is not to my preference. I'd gladly eat anything that Q39 puts out again except for their ribs. WAY too sweet for me.

I've been to jack stack. It's good but I'm not crazy about their sauce. I would like to try Arthur Bryant but don't wa to get mugged or carjacked. Heard good things about Joes.

Neither of those things will happen to you if you go to Arthur Bryant's to matter what the crazy imaginations of suburban people tell you.

I've never once felt like I was in danger at 18th and Brooklyn, not even at night.

Here's the Crime Rate data for 64127, Arthur Bryant's zipcode:

http://www.clrsearch.com/Kansas-City-Demographics/MO/64127/Crime-Rate

The risk of assault there is more than double in that zip code than in the United States as a whole. So it's not likely that a visitor would get assaulted, but it's also not like one shouldn't be aware of the fact that 18th and Brooklyn is in a dangerous part of town. I wouldn't discourage friends from visiting Bryant's, but I would make sure they knew to be alert and pay attention.

I went to junior high and senior high school at Lincoln (just up the hill, around 22nd and Brooklyn). I would feel OK but not great about walking around there at night to go take the Troost Bus home from night football games or practices. I would walk down Woodland to 19th or 18th and then walk over to Troost), but that was because I lived just east of the Paseo at 49th Terrace (a couple of blocks from Gates headquarters). Nowadays, the crime rate in 64100 is a little worse than in 64127, and I think that might have been the case back in the early 1980's, too, but I'm not sure. (I used to feel just slightly safer walking past Lincoln (21st and Woodland) at night than walking past Paseo High (near 48th and Woodland), but I felt way safer walking past Southwest High, for example.

Now that I live in a neighborhood with a low violent crime rate (zip code 95618), I'm even more on guard visiting the old neighborhoods.

By the way, even though I spent so much time near both Bryant's and Gates, I've had way more meals at Gates, at least 50 to 1. I just liked Gates better. But their quality control is not impeccable. I had two meals there a couple of weeks ago, one by my mom's house (the Swope Pkwy location, which has mutton) and the other out on 40 Highway, coming home from a Missouri Mavericks game. Gates is always good, but it's not consistently great. The fat in the mutton seems to vary from a lot to a whole lot. ;)

If Q39 is able to expand its business while maintaining its quality standards, that would be a great accomplishment.
