I'm gonna check it out until 8, at that point its switching over to the Walking Dead.

It'll be on On Demand for the next 6 months anyway, I'll get to see Eddie Murphys big return at some point... quite honestly, I'm not as big of a fan of the show as I used to be.

While the new group has some talent, its mostly the writing that sucks, its just not funny like it used to be... I'm finally at the point where others were decades ago "its just not that good anymore".

In large part, Lorne has lost the crowd that supported the show in the first place IMO.

They've been playing full episodes of the first few seasons on VH1 or something. There were some great moments of course, but mostly they were pretty bad. Not just outdated, but bad. It is amazing how this show has endured by producing 10 minutes of good material out of a 90 minute show for 40 years.

Chevy Chase has at least 6 of the best comic movies of all time between the Vacations, Fletches, and CaddyShacks.

I've enjoyed it, minus miley and kanye, but that's what fast forward is for.

It's also kind of sad, in that all the old star power coming back is a reminder of how flat it is now. There was some true genius in the 80s and 90s.

It almost feels like a finale.

Thought the show was a C+ for the talent they had available.

McCartney's voice is shot. If he wants to do a song, do one that's still in his vocal range. That version of "Maybe I'm Amazed" was painful to watch.

Miley and KWest just in there to hold younger viewers. Should have had Paul Simon do "50 Ways."

Where was Victoria Jackson and Dennis Miller? Since they're both Fox Newsies, wonder if they turned down an invite or boycotted?

I haven't seen Joe Piscopo on TV in 25 years or more. His Sinatra is pretty good, but Hartman's was better.

They just used Lovitz for a punchline. Too bad, dude is funny.

Fuck the Five Head. Fuck Jeter. Seriously. Charles Barkley would have been much much better.

Total waste of Eddie Murphy. Guess they were lucky just to get him to show up. Too bad they wouldn't let him do Velvet Jones, like they let Aykroid do Bass-O-Matic.

Would have liked to see more of Chris Rock, Chris Parnell and Sandler. Opera Man was epic.

Martin Short is frickin' hilarious. Maya Rudolph looked pretty smokin for her age.

Bill Murray was hilarious. Bet it was hard for him to have to kick off the death list, especially because Belushi and Radner were both close friends for him.

Darrell Hammond and Norm MacDonald both really funny in Celebrity Jeopardy.

Oh and I agree, "The Californians" skit sucked ass. I've never thought Kristin Wiig was all that funny, and the two singers in matching sweaters skit with her and Fred A was just stupid.

Where was Tim Kazarinski? Rich Hall? Harry Shearer? Billy Crystal? Christopher Guest? Randy Quaid? I guess Quaid is in a psycho ward somewhere....

Too many commercials in the last 60 minutes. Show lost its burst.

In addition I will have to listen to our local celebrity go on and on now about how he was on SNL.
Of course he sucked ball sack during the time he was on the show. That's why there was not one clip of him.

But we will have to endure all his stories of the SNL 40 Reunion. All we want to do is get drunk and have him STFU.

Like pretty much every other SNL episode in the last decade, it was meh at best. Celebrity Jeopardy was hilarious, but it might be the easiest skit to write for. Wayne's World was good, too. On the flipside, they could have revived Farley and Hartman from the dead and even they couldn't have made The Californians funny. Eddie Murphy's five nanoseconds of screentime were awkward and uncomfortable. They also had too many montages.

Eddie Murphy's five nanoseconds of screentime were awkward and uncomfortable.

Why was that? Because the awkwardness was palpable. It felt like he wanted to talk longer and they cut him off short or something. As much as Murphy contributed to the show, you'd think it would be more.

I will say he looked dead sober and serious up there. But it was all kinda weird...

That was just fucking bizarre. He seemed "weirded out" by the whole experience of being there, including his very awkward interview with Al Roker on the Red Carpet. Eddie Murphy needed to perform and not speak. He's not an interesting guy when he's not being funny.

Ratings:

On NBC, the SNL 40th Anniversary Red Carpet Special earned a 3.0 adults 18-49 rating. The SNL 40th Anniversary Special scored a 7.8 adults 18-49 rating, and was NBC’s top-rated primetime entertainment telecast, excluding post-Super Bowl programs since the Will & Grace finale on May 18, 2006, which earned a 8.4 adults 18-49 rating. It was also the network’s top-rated entertainment special in ten years, since the Friends clip show that aired before its series finale which notched a 16.7 adults 18-49 rating on February 6, 2004.

Who cares as long as what you were watching was funny?

Chevy Chase has at least 6 of the best comic movies of all time between the Vacations, Fletches, and CaddyShacks.

Some people get obsessed with the making of the sausage and don't simply enjoy the sausage.

NTTIAWWT.

Chase hasn't had the commercial success that Bill Murray or Eddie Murphy has had. Even in the movie they were both in together...Murray is the bigger standout than Chase.

I think Miley could have a real career if she drops all the attention whoring and pop music style. She killed that rendition and I could really get into her voice with a more folk rock or country sound.

I also think that while SNL isn't wall to wall gut busting funny, I don't buy that it ever was 100% funny all the time. The nature of the show being live is going to lead to hit and miss on the comedy. Now, some casts have been superior to others, and that may have effected the quality.

They still have some strong cast members but all the strong ones are female now. There really aren't many really good male cast members right now. I really like Cecily Strong, and Kate McKinnon.

All in all I still think the show is funny, just not as consistent as it was back in the day.

Finally caught up to it on the DVR, and I'd give it a B+. It wasn't top notch SNL material or anything, but that wasn't the point. It was a chance to look back and remember moreso than it was an attempt at creating a truly epic performance. Sure, a lot of them are past their primes at this point, but that doesn't take away from the incredible influence the show has had on our culture for the majority of most of our lives.
