OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Feb. 16, 2015 — /PRNewswire/ -- Imagine downloading 25 songs in less than one second or before you can even crank up the volume. Imagine loading your favorite HD movie in less than 36 seconds, a fraction of the time it takes to pick which movie to watch.
It's now a reality for qualifying residents and small businesses with today's launch of U-verse with AT&T* GigaPower (http://www.att.com/gigapower) in parts of Kansas City, Mo., parts of Leawood, Lenexa, Olathe, Overland Park, Kan. and in surrounding communities located throughout the metro area. "We're proud to launch in these cities as the first locations where we will offer ultra-high speeds to local consumers and employers in the Kansas City area," said Mike Scott, president of AT&T Kansas. "The AT&T GigaPower network will help encourage economic development in the area by facilitating a new wave of innovation through enhanced opportunities for education, health, research and small business growth."
"We've moved quickly to bring more competition to the Kansas City area for blazing-fast Internet speeds and best-in-class television service," said John Sondag, president of AT&T Missouri. "But this is just our initial launch. We look forward to continuing to expand our AT&T GigaPower network in the Kansas City area where there are strong investment cases and receptive customers."
Given the initial and continued success of U-verse with AT&T GigaPower in Austin, AT&T has announced a major expansion initiative (http://about.att.com/story/att_eyes_100_u_s_cities_and_municipalities_for_its_ultra_fast_fiber_network.html). AT&T is considering expanding its all-fiber network up to 100 cities and municipalities across 25 markets. With today's announcement, the AT&T GigaPower network is available to hundreds of thousands consumers and small businesses across parts of the Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Kansas City, Raleigh-Durham and Winston-Salem markets. AT&T previously announced plans to deliver U-verse with AT&T GigaPower in parts of 11 additional markets – Atlanta; Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C.; Chicago; Cupertino, Calif.; Houston; Jacksonville, Fla.; Miami; Nashville, Tenn.; St. Louis and San Antonio.
Frost & Sullivan recently recognized AT&T for its leadership in high-speed Internet services, awarding the company the 2015 North American Competitive Strategy and Innovation Leadership of the Year Award for Broadband (http://about.att.com/story/att_recognized_for_leadership_in_internet_and_video_services_catering_to_customers.html). The analyst firm praised AT&T for its "aggressive pursuit of higher bandwidth access" for customers through its AT&T GigaPower network initiative.
Additionally, AT&T has committed that upon approval of its proposed acquisition of DIRECTV, the company will expand the AT&T GigaPower network to an additional 2 million customer locations. All of these 2 million locations are over and above what the company announced in 2014.
AT&T has served the Kansas City area for 135 years and employs nearly 12,000 people in Kansas and Missouri.

Strange how the poor ISPs cry about how much bandwidth costs and how we need to throttle the internet and charge extra for Netflix/Amazon/etc users... until Google shows up.

a three year price guarantee.

Does that mean a 3 year contract?

This article does not mention how the data is transmitted. I would think that 1 Gb/s would need fiber optics. Where did that come from? Are they using what Goggle strung up? Did they run their own? One of our members should know.

Does that mean a 3 year contract?1 yr contract.

But it does have a Data cap.... U-verse High Speed Internet price includes 1TB of data per month. $10 for each additional 50GB.

Nice on the contract. Google Fiber is for 2 years but I don't think they have a data cap.

the data cap is BS, but it will go away sooner rather than later. Been a Uverse subscriber for almost a year, and I have no complaints. My internet would be faster with comcast, but then I would be a comcast customer.... AT&T customer service so far has been awesome. Dog chewed through the line twice in one weekend, and they had a tech out within a few hours each time. Just my experience so far, but if they can get me those types of speeds I'd have NO complaints.

Competition is good.

Google Fiber's customer service is right up there with REI. Can't see at&t matching that.

Yeah, I have had U-verse for about 5 years. Doesn't look like this is available yet in my part of Overland Park.

AT&T is fucking atrocious

They dug up all of south Johnson county trying to beat Google to Overland Park

Idiots

They should have went for the markets of the outlying areas around KC where Google has yet to go live. AT&T is terrible.

Exact opposite of my experience. Like I said, my dog chewed through the line on the back of my house twice in 48 hours, and neither time was I without service for more than a few hours. That means that within 3 hours of me calling to report the problem, they had a tech at my house fixing the issue. That is GREAT customer service.

I'm not too worried about it, since every other interaction I've had with them has been great. I would expect some pressure to remain a customer, but I can be a huge asshole if I'm pushed in that situation. Pretty sure I can make them cancel my service without too much effort.

I'm happy with Uverse, but they have competition here so it's no wonder the speeds are good.

The service has never been out for a moment in two years, and I have the cheapest internet plan and it's still fast enough for me to use Netflix. Works for me.

I don't know that this is true. The second tech and I decided to run the line to a different part of the house, but my dog should not have gotten to it where it was to begin with. She was just a bored destructive puppy who found something to chew on, by crawling under my deck.

These AT&T assholes showed up at my door a couple of years ago offering a kick ass deal with UVERSE. I told them hell yeah shit yeah, and got signed up for the conversion. Six months later when the tech finally came to the door to start it up, he informed me that Uverse was still a good couple of miles away from making it to my neighborhood. I politely told him thank you and that I would call back as soon as they got their shit to my neighborhood that they were selling me on six months earlier. Jackoffs.

ATT Customer Service is aids.

For awhile they would break something with every update and insisted the problem definitely was on my end and not their shit ****ing ass spaghetti code.

They sent tech after tech after tech out. Tried to say that a switch the install tech install had to be the problem. Absolutely ****ing had to be the problem. They also considered the switch he installed on his own free will to be a gift, wtf, and I was gonna be nailed with the tech visit fee of 50 dollars because of it.

We argued around and around and around. It wasn't the switch omfgnowai. In the end it was shitty code, which would of taken 5 minutes to determine if ATT CSM reps had any common sense what so ****ing ever.

Yeah I made sure to get a free month of service for that bullshit. ATT can **** themselves with a pinecone covered with AIDS flavored antifreeze.

Can confirm AT&T service is intolerable. In fact even the helpless, no-nothing person that finally shows up to help you but can't will usually admit it. they have no organization. No ability to manage calls. It's like a company operating in 80s Russia. I have never seen a DMV office that was more dysfunctional.

I've always thought it was kind of shady that Comcast and Time Warner agree to not offer service in the same territory in the KC area..so they don't have to compete with each other. They literally have an agreement with each other to do that. Another name for conveniently being able to control the price and quality of the service
