Yes, that's true. I'm just not too keen on giving Dorsey the benefit of the doubt after the amount of starters he let walk last offseason. We're also a week from free agency and the only quality starter on our OL is without a contract. But hey, let's throw the bank at an average at best quarterback.

They were mediocre starters (save Albert), and worth offloading to convert into Comp. picks. We didn't even drop off that much last year, except our receivers and Guard positions. ILB doesn't count due to injury.

I'm pretty happy with how it worked out, and will be even more happy when we get the extra picks.

Alright, Chicken Littles. Is this that hard to understand? It's all posturing.

Houston's agent is not going to let him sign anything now. His leverage is at its greatest just before or during training camp. Of course the Chiefs tagged him. Of course he's going to delay signing it. He may participate in offseason activities anyway or he may not. It's all posturing.

He will be in uniform this year, they aren't going to let the most talented player on defense sit a year or just walk away. Pioli is gone.

If they paid Bowe, they are surely not going to let someone who's actually integral to the team's fortunes get away.

There is no reason to pay Rodney Hudson top five money, let alone make him the highest paid center. He's very good, but that's just an utterly replaceable position.

It's the middle linebacker of the offense. Important, sure, but most of the time you find a starter in the second round or below.

Elite pass rusher, however...

Add to it that Justin Houston gave us monstrous production while playing on a third rounder salary. Chiefs will have to break the bank. Period.

So many of you all see that $100M total number and loose the power of your brain. Did you know that $46M of Watts contract is at the end and it is not guaranteed. But after this one year Watt will be costing them between 12 and 13M against the annual cap.

Actually, if he's asking for just outrageous money (and I mean outrageous), I'd probably take the two draft picks and let someone else pay said monies. The ONLY position I'd pay outrageous money to would be QB.

Matthews is the highest paid 3-4 OLB making $13.2 million yr. Watt's avg yearly income is $16.6 million. Robert Quinn's is $14.25 avg.

I would give Houston a $15.5 million avg yearly salary and it give him $20 million gauranteed.
I like how Houston set up Watt's contract and I hope we copy it.
Watt is making $21.96 million this year, BUT his remaining years are as follows:

'16-$12.5 million
'17-$12.5 million
'18-$13 million
'19-$13 million
'20-$15 million
'21-$17.5 million

4 years after his large cap number for the 2015 season he's making less than Clay Mathhews avg.

It's worth paying this guy one year of franchise QB money when you look at those circumstances.

If you were an agent and you had a client that could possibly be the best OLB in football, would you tell him to sign before his contract is over coming off an 11 sack season where he got injured at the end, or bet on himself the next year and for sure get an even better contract? I say this in every JH thread, but I'm confused why people think he could have signed last year. What leverage did he have? Even if he had a 12-14 sack season instead of 22, he would still get a larger contract now than he would have gotten last year just by the virtue of him being a free agent.

-King-
03-02-2015, 10:30 AM
Common sense.

You have none. What leverage could Houston have used to sign a good deal (for him) last year. If he signed a deal last year, it would have been very team friendly. Any smart player and agent would have done the same (played 2014 out without a contract and go into 2015 either franchise tagged or signing an even larger deal).

A long term contract would clearly have cost less before he challenged the NFL sack record.

We don't know how much he was asking for before/during the season but it's obviously more now...

Of fucking course. Shit, signing Poe now will be cheaper than if we wait until his rookie deal is over. But once again, it takes two to agree to a deal, and players don't have a ton of leverage negotiating before free agency. That's why they usually wait until their rookie deals are over and they're about to enter free agency to sign a LTD. If you're elite or close to elite, unless the team is throwing a boat load of money at you, there's no reason to sign a contract before you're a free agent.

Justin Houston situation is about to get very interesting

The Chiefs finally did what has been expected for months — they’ve applied the franchise tag to linebacker Justin Houston. And as explained over the weekend (when most of you weren’t devoting non-work time to non-work reading of the Internet), it’s much closer to the start of the process than the end of it.

The Chiefs opted for the non-exclusive version of the tag. On one hand, it’s cheaper than the exclusive level of the tag. On the other hand, it allows another team to sign Houston to an offer sheet that, if not matched by the Chiefs, would result in Houston changing hands for a pair of first-round picks.

Per a league source, Houston intends to aggressively pursue an offer sheet from another team, targeting teams that would be giving up a low first-round pick in 2015 and, most likely, a low first-round pick in 2016. Houston also intends to continue to pursue an offer sheet after the draft, when the compensation necessarily will become a first-round pick in 2016 and 2017.

Houston, we’re told, is seriously considering staying away from the Chiefs until the Week 10 deadline for signing the franchise tender. If nothing materializes by then, Houston would sign the tender, finish the season, and hit the market in 2016 — unless the Chiefs plan to tender him again, at a 20-percent raise over the 2015 franchise tender.

That’s a stark change from Houston’s in-season plan to sign the tender right away, gladly accepting the life-transforming $13 million or so for one year of play. That 22-sack season may have been a factor in Houston’s change of plans.

Finally, Houston will consult with the NFLPA to explore the possibility of filing a grievance seeking the defensive end franchise tender, which will be higher than the linebacker tender. Seven years ago, Ravens and Terrell Suggs engaged in a similar fight, with the two sides agreeing to essentially split the difference. For Houston, it could be a bit more challenging because he actually does play a considerable amount of linebacker, dropping into coverage in some passing situations.

Which makes him more versatile, makes his 22 sacks more impressive, and potentially makes him a lot more attractive to a team with a desperate coach and/or G.M. who may not be around to use the future draft picks that would be sacrificed to get Houston now.

One other thing before everyone goes all in on blaming Dorsey, Houston was the last player to sign during his rookie year and wanted more regardless of slotting.
Houston and his agent are going to be hard to negotiate with, they have been that way since he stepped into the league. Pioli and crew had a hard time with Houston as well, for those that liked Pioli contract stuff better.

Pretty clear that Houston wants $$$ and doesn't care where it comes from. Hey, that's his prerogative; can't blame him for that. However, it does suggest that his desire/dedication to play for the good old KC Chiefs isn't particularly high.

You build offenses around franchise quarterbacks and you build defenses around elite pass rushers.

JJ Watt doesn't even deserve Watt money.

Why did we have a winning season last year?

Ask yourself that.

DJ and Berry both left due to injury/illness.

We never threw a TD to a WR, so don't put any worth there.

Charles' talent is through the roof but he was ignored or minimized by the play calling.

We allowed the 7th fewest ppg in the NFL last year.
We ranked 25th in pts scored in the NLF last year.

So despite losing two pro bowl level talents we still produced on D while Houston beasted out an (almost) NFL record...

Maybe the Chiefs have an offer on the table, and told him he could try to get a better offer under the franchise tag. Maybe the Chiefs are willing to match the better offer, or maybe they will get two first round picks. Houston's agent has to be careful though because that offer sheet is a two-edged sword and teams will be less willing to offer some giant long-term deal PLUS give up two first round picks.

What I would worry about is a team like the Raiders dropping a huge year 1 salary bomb that we can't match (since they have to spend the money anyway) - but even then - Houston for two high first round picks? That's not all bad, and really pretty unlikely.

The four-year term mentioned above can turn to five years at the team’s discretion. In the prior rookie pay system, teams and players negotiated “buy backs” of additional contract years, often for significant compensation to the player. The new CBA eliminated such bells and whistles from these deals but does permit teams to add a year to first-round contracts without buying it. Article VII, Section 7(a) of the CBA allows teams to apply a fifth-year to first-round contracts, provided it is exercised before May 3 of the player’s fourth season, with salary as follows:

For players picked 1-10, the transition tag for their position in their fourth year (thus, the 2014 transition tag for 2011 picks);
For players picked 11-32, the average salary of players ranked 3rd-25th in salary for that position.

So what will happen? Look for the Chiefs to apply the franchise tag to Houston during the two-week window that opens on Monday. Then look for Houston to immediately sign the franchise tender, opting to play the year-to-year game that would force the Chiefs to give him a 20-percent raise in 2016 or let him walk — and then a 44-percent raise in 2017 or let him walk.
