Pretty sure the title spells it all out.

I hope not we have to extend Alex Smith. He's apparenlty top priority over anybody else.

Discuss Thrower has made it abundantly clear this morning that he has no understanding of the Chiefs' cap situation.

I think the long term plan is to have all 52 players still on their rookie contract.

This is actually possible. Except I am not sure why we would carry an empty roster spot.

Think about how much money they could pay Alex Smith in this scenario!

There are many moments when Discuss Thrower is a top football poster on this board.

Then there are others where he's dumber than Reerun.

This is one of those times.

Legitimate question.

Doesn't having 10 or 11 picks kind of press the $5million or so usually allocated in the cap for rookie signings?

They allocate based off of number of picks. The 1 year we had like 13 picks we had the most amount of money to spend on said picks. In short, nice thread.

yes, they can.

Will they choose to? Dunno.

People say the Chiefs spend, but spending goes much deeper if a team REALLY wants it.

For those who clearly have NO CLUE about the cap (and clearly Discuss Thrower is one of them), the bottom line is that draft picks are by far the best and most economical players on your team if you do a reasonable job of drafting. You WILL cut older, less productive players in order to ensure that you have cap room not just for those picks, but for the in-season maneuvers that are required as a result of unexpected injuries etc.

Teams often want some extra salary cap room to carry into the next year, as this can only help the team in subsequent years, especially as a result of NLTBE adjustments that negatively affect the subsequent cap year.

(and if anyone wants this last paragraph explained, let me know).

Boo for me for expecting people to get the context, amirite.

Anyway, Sportrac says the rookie allocation is something like nearly $5m, so they're going to need a bit more than that, right? Probably something like $5.5m to get 10 picks signed.

Where is all this money going to come from? (This is rhetorical, btw)

Geez, people. It wasn't that dumb of a question. Somebody asks for some NFL cap/spending knowledge on a Chiefs board and gets flamed into the Stone Age for it. Ease up.

The allocation is directly related to how many and which picks you have.

Err....not sure what you're asking.

The rookie cap is a cap within the cap. Each team has a certain amount of money that it can spend on its draft picks and possible rookie FA signings (I think they are included, but I'm not 100% certain).

I hope all 7 of those draft picks smoke weed the night before their first piss tests as Kansas City Chiefs.

So the team has to carve out space according to the value of the draft pick.

correct. The Chiefs will likely have 11 picks and I have estimated their rookie pool to equal 6.5 mill.

That's more generous than I was guessing but I'll take your word for it.

It's going to take cutting DeVito and Daniel just to get Houston under the cap. Jettisoning Hali will get you your $6.5m for rookie signings with $3m in change left over.

From there it gets interesting to get some cap space.. Doesn't it?

From my offseason plan:
http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=290959

This is how I would address the cap prior to the beginning of free agency:
+5,000 Restructure Dwayne Bowe
+8,298 Restructure Tamba Hali
+2,750 Restructure Derrick Johnson
+4,000 Cut Mike Devito
+1,337 Cut AJ Jenkins
+3,800 Cut/Trade Chase Daniel
+3,550 Cut Donnie Avery
+3,000 Cut Joe Mays
+1,975 Cut Anthony Fasano
+770 Cut Frank Zombo
+685 Cut Donald Stephenson
+5,455 NFI Eric Berry
+4,350 Extend Sean Smith

44,970 Total Savings

This should put us at just over 19 million in cap space, after factoring out a 6.5 million rookie pool. Factor out Houston as tagged and you have 6mill in cap space for free agency this year. Bolded moves have been done already. This list includes zero june 1 designated cuts and the only backloaded deal is Sean Smith and its not excessively back-loaded.
