Score one for the team that didn’t get a single touchdown from its wide receivers in 2014.

Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin intends to sign with the Chiefs, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Sunday night.

A Chesterfield, Missouri native and University of Missouri product, the 26-year-old Maclin hauled a career-high 85 passes for 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Eagles in 2014. He played four seasons under now-Chiefs coach Andy Reid in Philadelphia (2009-2012).

The reported loss of Maclin is a setback for the Eagles, whose offense is suddenly in need of speed. In the last year, the club has let go of wide receiver DeSean Jackson and agreed to deal tailback LeSean McCoy.

And now, Maclin looks to be departing, too.

No one can be sure. Smith's never had a WR close to the talent of a Maclin. If Smith can get a lazy slackass like Bowe 60 receptions on 96 targets? Yes... I think he can make Maclin happy enough. Still need an OL that resembles a hint of pro quality.

Doesn't have to be the first but should be in the first 3 rounds. Adding somebody like Nelson Agholor, Justin Hardy, Tyler Lockett, Devin Smith, etc. in rounds 2 or 3 would be a good idea. Even with Maclin our wide receiver corps is pretty barren now and needs some new talent and bodies.

While that is true, other qb's throw to their elite WR's even when the Elite WR is covered. They have that much faith in their accuracy. Alex rarely does. once in a great while he will attempt it, but not like the good qb's in the league.

I get what you are saying. I doubt it's a lack of trust in his arm as much as a lack of trust in who he is throwing to. That, and he IS a cautious by nature QB.. so unless circumstances are do or die, he will be selective about the risk more so than most. Finally having a top shelf WR may loosen him up.

Alex Smith lost his job in san fran because he was turning it over during the shitty HC era. He then started getting recognition because he never turned it over. He took pride in never turning it over.

Then when he did try to trust our receivers they let him down. Bowe repeatedly let him down, Avery too.

Chiefs expected to sign Jeremy Maclin when free-agency begins Tuesday
BY TEREZ A. PAYLORTHE KANSAS CITY STAR

CHRIS SZAGOLA AP

It looks like the Chiefs are about to land the deep threat they so desperately need.

A source confirmed to The Star on Sunday evening that former Missouri Tigers star and Philadelphia Eagles receiver Jeremy Maclin will sign with the Chiefs when the free-agency period begins on Tuesday.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported the news first.

With the move, Maclin, 26, gets to reunite with Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who selected him in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft when he was in charge of the Eagles.

Maclin is coming off a monster season in which he bounced back from a torn right ACL in 2013 to catch 85 passes for 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns in 16 games. Most importantly, Maclin showed no traces of the knee injury, as he still flashed his trademark speed, burst and ability to track the deep ball.

Maclin is considered to be the No. 2 receiver on the market, behind Green Bay’s Randall Cobb, who is expected to sign a four-year, $40 million deal when the free-agency period officially begins at 3 p.m. Tuesday. He will almost certainly give a boost to a sagging wide receiving corps that failed to record a single receiving touchdown all season in 2014.

Nothing can officially be signed until Tuesday, but the Chiefs will need to create cap space by then to accommodate a player of Maclin’s caliber. They are already approximately $1.1 million over the cap — not counting Josh Mauga’s recent extension, the terms of which have not been released — and need to make more roster moves to get down under the cap by league deadline of Tuesday.

The Chiefs can create more room by negotiating a lower salary with safety Eric Berry, who is slated for an $8.3 million cap hit but is currently battling lymphoma, and/or converting quarterback Alex Smith’s base salary to a bonus.

Other players whose release would create a sizable amount of cap space include receiver Dwayne Bowe ($14 million cap hit in 2015), inside linebacker Derrick Johnson ($5.2 million), quarterback Chase Daniel ($3.8 million) and defensive end Mike DeVito ($4 million).

Provided Daniel stays, however, he would get an opportunity to reunite with his favorite target at Mizzou, where they starred together from 2007 to 2008. Both were recently inducted into the University of Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame.

Nice. Hope it's a Suggs-like deal to let him finish his career here.

Hold on...restructured his contract?

How can he restructure his deal when he is in the last year of his deal?

I think they mean he will sign an extension...not a restructure.

Converting the $6,750,000 base into a lower base with incentives would do it.

What a night. I can confirm @caplannfl’s report that Tamba Hali has taken a pay cut to stay with the #Chiefs in 2015, per a source.

You don't let good WRs that elite QBs can make look like All Pro Calibre simply because that QB can make shitty receivers look pretty good.

Your logic is the flawed logic here.

... and you are too closed off in your belief that Rodgers needs these high-paid WRs to excel... not just be good or decent.. but excel. He needs them... or they would put that cap money elsewhere.

Are people really surprised by much of this? Of course Hali was going to take a pay cut. Otherwise, he was going to be cut, outright, and then take a pay cut when his semi-broke dick (less than 5") signed elsewhere.

Not shocking. Not especially exciting news.
