Houston's Mack Rhoades expected to be named new AD at Mizzou
March 8, 2015 10:38 pm ET

Houston AD Mack Rhoades is expected to be named the new athletic director at Missouri on Monday, CBSSports.com has learned.

The 49-year old Rhoades would be replacing Mike Alden who is stepping down in August. Multiple sources said Rhoades would replace Alden after other candidates dropped out of the picture. Ole Miss AD Ross Bjork reportedly took his name out of the running over the weekend. In addition, a source close to Texas A&M senior athletic director Jason Cook said he would not be getting the job.

Rhoades is considered one of the most dynamic administrators in the country. In the last two years alone he has hired championship coaches in basketball and football as well as overseeing construction of a new on-campus football stadium.

In basketball, former Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson just concluded his first regular-season 12-18 with the Cougars. Former Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman took over the football program in January fresh off a national championship with the Buckeyes.

Rhoades arrived at Houston in June 2009, successfully guiding the athletic department from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference during conference realignment. Under Rhoades' watch, Houston reached the top 10 and won 13 games in Kevin Sumlin's final season in 2011.

Rhoades was instrumental in fundraising for the $120-million TDECU Stadium that was completed in August. Houston is also in the process of building a $25 million basketball practice facility.

At Missouri, he'll have more access to resources to build facilities. SEC revenue is expected to skyrocket with the addition of revenue from the SEC Network launched in August.

This is Rhoades' first Power 5 job. He previously worked at Akron and Texas El-Paso.

At Missouri he inherits a football program perhaps at the high point of its existence. The Tigers have played in back-to-back SEC title games as East Division champions. Gary Pinkel, hired by Alden in 2001, is entering his 15th season as the program's winningest coach (112 victories). Twice since 2007, Pinkel has led the Tigers to within a game of a BCS title game berth.

While Texas A&M president, current Missouri chancellor R. Bowen Loftin considered Rhoads for the Aggies' job in 2012. That position eventually went to Eric Hyman.

Rhoades is expected to be formally announced at a Tuesday press conference.

You hired a guy who's been trying for years to get his school into the Big 12 and he was laughed at.

Rhoades BLOWS. He talks a good game but that's it. He knows how to play "the game" very well.

BTW, I don't understand how this writer can get away with writing such bullshit. Rhoades DIDNT EVEN WANT THE NEW STADIUM. He HAD to go along with the plan. Once he understood this he COASTED through the process. He didnt "oversee" anything. All he did was sit in his AD chair and get the credit for the stadium he didnt want. This guy is a TOOL in every sense of the word. As a UH alumnus, I'm glad he's gone. That opinion is shared by most.

Oh, good lord.

Alden wasn't responsible for football success, Pinkel and his staff are. As long as Rhoades leaves them alone, they'll be fine.

And if he has the balls to end the KA experiment right away, he'll already be +1 in my book.

We shall see . . . . .

In Mizzou's defense I'm in the camp that AD really has very little to do with success once the coaches are in place.

Pinkle won't listen to anything this new guy has to say just like Bill Self couldn't care less about SZ.

The new basketball hire will be important. Bball coaches don't seem to want to come to MU and not being willing to pay anyone anything isn't helping.

It was about this guy and his micromanaging ways:
http://www.komu.com/images/news/sports_mike_alden_mizzou_athletic_director.jpg

Something tells me an Athletic Director willing to hire Kelvin Sampson is probably going to be more hands-off. And it would be impossible for an AD to have a worse rep in coaching circles than Mike Alden (unless his last name rhymes with Flurrie).

Tom Hermann now becomes a name to watch if Pinkel retires before he leaves Houston. He's a young, up-and-coming coach with major ties to the Southeast and a rep as a major recruiting asset.

Holy Shit! I just agreed with Bambi on something!

But, seriously, it's true. Pinkel and his guys will continue to do their thing and the new AD has a chance to hit a HR right away by firing KA and making a run at someone competent to coach the BB team.

Whether he will or not remains to be seen . . . .

.houston athletic department profile
Now, more than ever, college athletics has become an arm race. University Presidents and Athletic Directors are faced with two options, accept the challenge and invest in the university and athletics or don’t, and possibly be forced to shut down. The University of Houston has become an example of what happens when the decision makers like AD Mack Rhoades and President Renu Khator choose to invest in athletics.

The last eighteen months have seen the University of Houston experience extraordinary success both on the field and off. For a university that has not even seen its hundredth year of educating, Houston is no stranger to success. From the 1980s, Phi Slama Jama basketball teams led by Hakeen Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler, to Andre Ware’s 1989 Heisman Trophy and the countless championships.

CollegeAD recently talked with UH Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Marketing and Communications David Bassity to find out how the university has grown and what its plans are to continue to grow.

Fundraising
houston athletic department profile
To stay competitive in the college athletics arms race, it takes money and lots of it. The University of Houston has implemented several fundraising organizations as well as partnering with companies like IMG College. Cougar Pride, which was founded in 2003, raises money through private donations. The money raised by Cougar Pride is earmarked strictly for athletic scholarships. When AD Rhodes arrived in 2009, Cougar Pride was taking in roughly $1.5 million in donations, in 2014 the group received $4.5 million and in 2015, Cougar Pride is pacing to raise $5.5 million for student-athlete scholarships.

Houston has also partnered with IMG College, and is the multimedia rights partner of the University of Houston. The partnership with IMG College has seen sponsorship agreements to Cougar athletics grow more than 20% over the past two years.

The university also relies on private gifts to raise money. Private gifts are what helped Houston build its brand new TDECU football stadium. Houston also generates income through partnerships and advertising within the local community. The Credit Union and the university agreed on a 10 year, $15 million dollar deal which gives TDECU the naming rights to the stadium. The agreement is the largest corporate sponsorship for naming rights in the NCAA.

Community Support
houston athletic department profile
One of the most important yet underrated aspects of college athletics is community support. Especially support from the student body and young alumni. For much of its existence, Houston has had a commuter-college feel to it, but the university has started to change that feel and culture.

One of President Khator’s top priorities was to give students the traditional college feel. As a result, UH now has over 8,000 on-campus beds and allows all students FREE entry into ALL athletic events. The university even allows the UH Student Government Association to be involved in athletic meetings and provides input and feedback directly to athletic administrators. New football coach Tom Herman will even allow students to partake in spring practice. Students will be allowed to make a play call or kick a field goal. Houston has expanded the student section at TDECU Stadium from 5,000 seats to 7,500 seats.

This renewed interest in student involvement has created a created a rowdy and packed student section, and more importantly students become invested in Cougar athletics. In an effort to keep these undergraduates involved once they graduate, the university has created a special young alumni section with membership having its own perks. Recent graduates are eligible for the young alumni club for four years after they graduate.

The club allows the young alumni to give $25 to Cougar Pride but receive a credit as if they have donated $100. Young alumni are also given their own seating section in TDECU Stadium, season tickets for this section cost just $125 dollars for the season. The ticket is $100 and the $25 goes to the Cougar Pride foundation.

The support for Cougar athletics is not just limited to the student body and young alumni. In 2014, UH set a record with 15,022 season tickets sold for football. Over the past five seasons, the university has sold an average of 11,237 football season tickets, with attendance averaging 28,654 over that same time period. In 2014, an average of 28,311 fans saw the Cougars play in TDECU Stadium.

2012. 27,247
2011. 31,731
2010. 31,728

Facilities
houston athletic department profile

The new TDECU football facility is 40,000 seat stadium which opened its doors for the first time in 2014. TDECU provides Cougar football with one of the finest on-campus facilities in the country. The stadium features 26 suite, 42 large boxes and four party patios. Each of the 26 suites that run around the stadium are available in exchange for a $100,000 donation to the university.

The 42 large boxes are each equipped with a table and four chairs. The chairs are not cemented into the ground like traditional stadium seating; instead the four chairs are on wheels, allowing movement inside of the box. The four party patios can each hold up to 24 Cougar fans. The football team also has 3 turf practice fields they can use. But the football team wasn’t the only squad to recently receive upgrades.

Just last season, the Houston baseball team installed new turf at Cougar Field. The entire playing surface is now synthetic grass, with the exception of the pitchers mound. The softball team also recently had its locker room upgraded.

Houston is currently building a brand new, three story basketball training facility. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams will have access to three courts to practice on. The building will house all of basketball operations once complete. It will be equipped with weight rooms, training rooms and equipment rooms, as well as all of the offices for all Cougar basketball coaches.

Cougar golf is also able to call a PGA Tour course home. Redstone Golf Club, which hosts the Houston Shell Open, is where the Cougars play and practice. If the weather is bad, Cougar golfers can work on their game from the recently built Dave Williams Golf Academy. The Academy is located on the Redstone driving range.

But Houston is not done. The university is finalizing plans for some upcoming projects including:

Renovations to the track/soccer facility

New lights at the baseball field

Installing the country’s largest video board at a collegiate baseball field

Academics
houston athletic department profile

The last three years have seen Houston student-athletes reach great heights in the classroom. In the fall of 2012, UH student-athletes set several university records. Student-athletes passed an average of 13.9 hours and did it with a 2.87 GPA. In the fall of 2013 student-athletes did even better. Cougar athletes finished with a 2.95 GPA, the best in department history. In 2014, UH athletes set a spring semester record when they finished with a 2.89 GPA.

Sitting in the nation’s fourth largest city, it’s easy to see why the future seems so bright for the University of Houston and its athletic programs. As long as leadership stays invested in making sure Cougar coaches field the finest teams possible, playing in the nicest facilities, fans and alumni will continue to support the university. Houston has clearly recognized what it needs to do to stay competitive on a national level and the investments are already paying off. 2014 saw the baseball team play in the NCAA Super Regional’s and begin the 2015 campaign ranked in the top 10. Just recently, the university named Tom Herman as its new Head Football Coach, hiring him away from the national champion Ohio State Buckeyes. With its commitment to athletics firm, the University of Houston is well on its way to becoming one of the nation’s finest athletic programs.

Looks loke Mr Denim himself will be roaming the sidelines at Mizzou Arena soon. By all accounts Kim Anderson is a good man but he could be replaced by a total cheater. If that actually happens any pretense about "building character" or teaching kids about life will be out th door. Which is what D1 sports is all about.

Doubt the alums would allow Denim to come

He's Really good at talking a good game. He's a VERY likable guy. Just rides coat tails and gets way more credit for things than he directly controls. He finds the "Bill Belichick" in most situations and rides the results - Much the way that Scott Pioli did. On the rare occasions where he actually stood alone at UH - he failed.

I have seen conflicting things on Rhoades from UH fans. Some love him, some hate him.

I do have a friend who is an Akron grad, who is a big fan of what Rhoades did there and thought he handled the expansion project he took over (football stadium in beginning stages) really well. He raised funds at a strong level for Akron and apparently did the same at UH in keeping that stadium expansion on track.

For a program that is just finishing Phase 1 of a three-phase football stadium project, those are good things to have.

I also like the willingness to hold coaches to a high standard and move on quickly if they do not meet his expectations. And pulling Tom Hermann from Ohio State was a major coup...

Unless you're saying that Hermann was not Rhoades and some other factor was at play there, that's a huge positive for Rhoades.

I've never heard of this guy till yesterday...so this is interesting, but confusing. What does finding the "Bill belichick" in most situations mean? Does he like hoodies?

Also, having read this, I'd like to see Bill Belichick in a bunch of different situations... dating, working concessions stand, valet, math teacher.

He's not Mark Allnut - that's really all I cared about.

Had they hired Allnut it would've been absolute proof that the blue-hairs have seized control and we'd be stuck with Eeyore the assclown recruiting 3 stars and yelling at guys for slouching for the next 5 years.

Now I'm not of the mind that Rhoades is more likely to fire Anderson than, say, Bjork would've been (and that would've been a true HR hire), but he's a hell of a lot more likely to fire him than Allnut would've been and by all accounts, Allnut was the #2 guy on their list - let that sink in folks, we were pretty close to hiring SEMO's AD...that's how much sway the fucking 'Norm Forever!' crowd has in this University. {shudder}

As to Tex's criticism that he "He finds the "Bill Belichick" in most situations and rides the results"....GOOD. That's exactly what the AD should be doing. Go get smart coaches, let them win and then glad-hand with the boosters and take their money.

I'm judging this hire exclusively based on how likely it is to get Kim Anderson fired. If Kim Anderson is gone within the next 13 months, then this is a good hire. If he's gone within the next month, it's a GREAT hire. For real - fuck you, Kim Anderson.
