My gas bill went from $82 to $190.

What the hell.

It's never been CLOSE to that high the whole time I've lived in this house. Last year at this time it was $67.

WTF IS GOING ON?

Check to see if there are a bunch of gypsies camped in your yard. They may have hooked into your system.

Mine jumped but it was because I was running my fireplace

You have a gas leak bro. Shut everything off and go see if the meter is running.

Did they set you up on one of those budget plans where you pay the same amount for several months followed by an adjustment month?

I'm anal, but I read my meters every month on the 15th, which is right around the end of the billing cycle.

GoChiefs, I'd call KCP&L and ask them about it. Meter reads can be wrong.

House. No fireplace.

For your bill to jump that much you either have an undetected gas leak, someone tapped into your gas line, or the gas company had a big rate increase.

How is your meter read? Remotely or do they physically read it?

Call them and ask them to check into it. A meter can go bad and they'll be happy to test it.

Why call a power and light company for a gas problem?

My gas company (Oklahoma natural gas) has screwed up reading before. Resulted in no Bill the next month. My gas bill went down $40 this month so I'm expecting they read it wrong.

Yeah I would be giving them a call at 8:01 Monday morning. You either have a leak or that was a bad read. If the DEA flagged it you may also see some black SUV's parked across from your house. :hmmm:

Even if you don't think you have a leak, you should probably take Hog Farmers advice. Turn everything off and see if the meter is moving. Better safe than dead from a gas explosion.

Right.

Seriously, go and take a picture of the register (dial). If you don't know how to read a meter, I'll do it. Then, compare that to the last actual meter read on the bill (not the consumption). See if they match more or less.

I noticed that my electric meter stopped counting a few years ago. I waited another month and called them to let them know that their meter was bad. The lady asked how I knew it was bad and I told her that I read my meters every month. She laughed and said, "That's pretty... OCD" She thanked me a bunch and said that this was a first and that they would comp me a month's bill as thanks.

I'm all electric, my last bill was $320 but I was running on auxiliary heat as my outside unit had a bad motor. Finally got off my butt and replaced it after that, $180 for a new motor, those things have gone up. I have since turned the heat off for the most part for about the last 3 weeks. My bill should drop like a rock the next couple of months.

I'm getting ready to put a Trane 95% efficient gas furnace and Trane 18 seer AC in. My current set up is a 17 year old American Standard 80% gas furnace and 13 seer AC. Hoping my bills drop by $20.

Register reads 0027. That's weird. Did they just replace the register?

Look at your bill and see what the end read was.

No way to tell about a leak from a picture.

Oh, and you have an Itron AMR meter.

I have some sniffing equipment that detects gas leaks but I also have a bunch of a product called Snoop that I use to detect leaks around fittings. You can also use dish washing soap and water as well. Go mix up some dish washing soap and water and dump it around the fitting joints and see if you get bubbles. If you see any kind of bubbles being produced around a joint you have a leak.

It looks like they replaced your old register with a new one (hence the 0 reading) on March 7. I'd be willing to be that the meter reader screwed up and the last read on the old register should have been 6792, not 6972.

Call them Monday and tell them what happened. Unfortunately, with the new register zeroing out, you have no way of proving the above. But, I would hope they would put the swap out and the fact that the consumption was abnormally high at the same time together and reduce the bill.

Do they even have meter readers now? I though they switched over to scanners or something. They just point and a data recorder records it?

Most utilities in metro areas have some kind of AMR on their gas meters. Either drive or walk-by, or completely human-free.

I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago. I had a gas bill of about $60 in August. It's normally less than $15 in the summer. They had replaced my meter and the adjustment was made on subsequent bills. Hopefully, that's what will happen with your situation. I have Kansas Gas Service and I'd assume MGE will do the same.

Maybe his ERT went bad. I worked on the crew that installed those Itron units all over KC back in 1996-97. They have lithium batteries, but are not self-charging.

Definitely looks like some type of error to me. Not a matter of your usage going up.

Just call em tomorrow, slap em around and they'll send someone out to look at it again.

My theory is this. The meter was read incorrectly at 6972. Was likely 6792 or something like that. They then installed a new meter which is why it went back to zero unless your meter rolls over after 7,000 which wouldn't make sense to me. It should roll over at 9,999.

The problem now is proving an incorrect reading on a meter that is no longer in use. Had it been a misread and you had the same meter then it'd be an easy fix if they just checked it again.
