View Full Version : Chiefs Chiefs Kiss Her Goodbye

Apologies if posted earlier, I've been gone for a few days. '"Grandma" Betty Johnson has been in her seat in Row 1 Section 119 for as long as I have. She sits just down the row from me to my left. Very sad story, she was a great fan:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/25152371/chiefs-grant-superfans-dying-wish-with-goodbye-kiss-from-hofer

Betty Johnson was a Kansas City Chiefs superfan. Her family says she never missed a game. In fact, former Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe would come over to Johnson's spot in the stands and give her a kiss before each contest.

On Thursday, Johnson's health took a turn for the worse, and her dying wish was to see her beloved Chiefs one last time. The team responded, making Johnson's wish come true by sending former kicker and Chiefs Hall of Famer Nick Lowery to give Johnson a kiss.

"We sang a prayer, and he was going to leave, and we noticed that she was no longer breathing," Johnson's granddaughter Autumn Barricks said, according to KSHB.com. "We believe that she was just waiting to say goodbye to her Chiefs."

Pretty great of the Chiefs to make this happen for Johnson one last time, and really cool of Lowery to go do it.

Thankfully, the game of football as we know it will be no more well before I'm 90.

I feel for the poor lady who supported such a bad franchise for so long.

****ing Bowe man, people can say this and say that... but the guy embraced being a Chief, its sad to see him gone.

I will be following his career with Browns with real interest, hoping for the best for him and I've never said that about anyone that left this team... always said his heart was in the right place, it was just a bad fit for this current regime.

Seriously mang, is no one touched by how hard Bowe tried to be a beloved figure in this town?

The guy relished his time here, wouldnt doubt it for one second... he was hiring nutritionists, he was making time for little old ladies, he never said no to a coach etc etc etc.

He was a damn good Chief, what, second or third all time? He was a good kid, bet whoever QB's the Browns will love him and so will the fans.

He may not be Gordon, but he's certainly the most consistent and reliable guy that team has had in forever... they're lucky to have him, he'll catch a ton of desperation chucks from whoever they put in there.

He had aggravating lapses, no question.

But who in Cleveland besides Gordon gives them a better target?

And frankly, if you have a good answer to that, I dont wanna hear it... he genuinely loved Kansas City and its football team, thats enough to make me care about the guy and his future.

I find it funny how when a player gets released there is this reaction that happens with his fans that make them feel sorry for him.

He's a fucking millionaire. He made more at 23 then you'll ever make in your life (unless you're Dane). He's retiring before 40 and he can import all the hoes he desires.

I actually wish a lot more fans would take this tact. Paying more attention to the trials and travails day-in day-out of other teams [good or bad] generally ends up making you more optimistic about your own team.

Chiefs fans pretty much gauge the team against Sportscenter's top ten plays.

If we as fans had to stay enthused based on media coverage, Clark would pack up and move to LA... this team was a legit threat to any and everyone last year, yet the media coverage has been almost non-existent.

And I mean almost NOTHING has been written about the Chiefs this offseason... you can bet your ass if the Chargers had beaten both New England and Seattle, mfers wouldn't shut up about them.

Not even good old Jeff Chadiha is talking about us this year, its weird.

Wow, I thought Bowe was a bit of an overrated diva with weed problem, and, while he still might be both of those things, this story was really touching.

I'd expect this kind of story from an NHL player, but an NFL WR?!? Wow! I have a lot more respect for Bowe today than I did in the past.

Big thumbs up for Bowe. :thumb:

Dwayne Bowe makes incredible gesture

Dwayne Bowe is proving to be one of the better people to walk through the doors in recent years at One Arrowhead Drive. Bowe, who was released this offseason, is now with the Cleveland Browns on a two-year deal. Still, Bowe’s heart is apparently entrenched in Kansas City.

On Tuesday, Bowe returned to the area to pay his respects to Betty Johnson, a 86-year-old woman who was a Chiefs season-ticket holder since 1986. Johnson was famous among Chiefs players, affectionately known as “grandma” too many of them, according to Chris Oberholtz of KCTV5.

Throughout his career in Kansas City, Bowe would kiss Johnson before every game. Upon learning about her death on Thursday, Bowe came into town for the services, something which meant plenty to Johnson’s family.

“He flew in for my mother’s funeral to give her the last kiss. Her celebration was just what she wanted. I wished I could have seen her in heaven today. I know she was there in spirit. It was a special ending to very special person,” daughter Susan Johnson said.

Bowe also spoke at the funeral along with sending her a wreath of white flowers, with the following words attached to them.

“You might have thought your were the Chiefs No. 1 fan, but in so many ways, we were yours. Thanks for making Arrowhead feel like home to me. I will continue to play my heart out for you. Kisses to you my special angel.”

Look, Bowe will be viewed rightfully as the enemy in Week 16 when the Browns come to Arrowhead Stadium. Still, he deserves a massive ovation. He always played hard, was a good presence in the community and a leader as he matured. Yes, Bowe has off-field issues, but nothing of a violent nature. By all accounts, Bowe is a good person.

This was one heck of a classy move by Mr. Bowe.
