First time in MLB history. Wow

With riots continuing on the streets of Baltimore, the Orioles' scheduled home game against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday has been postponed. The Orioles later announced that Wednesday's game will be played at Camden Yards but will be closed to the public.

They provided the full details of the schedule changes, including makeup dates for the postponements Monday and Tuesday, via a press release:

“

MLB Communications confirmed the news and provided a comment from commissioner Rob Manfred:

“

In light of ongoing circumstances in Baltimore, here are schedule alterations in addition to tonight's postponement: pic.twitter.com/OMvQ7y32y0

According to the Orioles' official Twitter account, the decision for Tuesday's game was made after consulting officials with knowledge of the ongoing situation:

“

After consultation with MLB & state & local officials, tonight’s game between the Orioles & the White Sox at Oriole Park has been postponed.
— Baltimore Orioles (@Orioles) April 28, 2015”

David Just of the Chicago Sun-Times reported it will be the first game in MLB history played without fan admittance.

Monday's contest between the Orioles and White Sox at Oriole Park was also postponed, and Manfred commented on the steps the league was taking to solve the issue after the postponement, per The Associated Press and ESPN.com.

"At this point we're looking at every possible alternative in terms of completing the schedule in a timely way and making sure the games are played in a security situation that is safe for the fans. We're going to look at every alternative at this point," he said.

The O's were scheduled to host the Sox on Wednesday, followed by a three-game home series against the Tampa Bay Rays starting Friday. The news of the schedule change for Wednesday comes after ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reported earlier Tuesday that Major League Baseball was exploring options to make those games happen:

“

#Orioles-#WhiteSox game tonight has been postponed. Discussions continue on options for tomorrow's game & the weekend series with the #Rays
— Jayson Stark (@jaysonst) April 28, 2015”

Right now, the focus in Baltimore is on public safety, which is certainly understandable. Until the protests subside, it is unlikely any baseball will be played in the city.

My first thought is that if riots are still going on when this game is being played, there's very little chance that people don't find a way to get in.

The MLB could make a HUGE public relations windfall by inviting in for FREE, all the Baltimore kids from the projects as goodwill. All have to be under 18

I hope so. It'd actually be kind of fascinating to watch the eerie silence. Or to hear the players cheering for each other.

They can't do that. If there are any fans in the stadium, then they need cops, and part of the reason why they are closing the game to the public is because Baltimore doesn't want to spare any police.

Not sure if it'll be free on MLB.tv

According to Passan, Jeff Samardzija's ERA in front of no fans is 45.00. Maybe they can reroute the national guard over to Camden Yards to protect it from getting bigger.

Why don't they just turn on some music? There's no reason it has to be silent, I guess. Unless there's some lame MLB rule they don't want to work around.

Just watched the highlights

It was funny to hear all the cheering coming from the dugouts. That stuff normally gets drowned out by the crowd noise

There were lots of fans standing outside the Camden gates cheering the team on, so I have no idea what this "fanless" game accomplished?

If MLB has access to a time machine, they'd probably go back to last night and revise the announcement and let fans watch this game.

For all they knew, the riots could have continued near the stadium and they can't risk allowing their fans to be put in danger. Even if the risk is 1 or 2%, the consequences of guessing wrong would be too high.

If a few fans want to ignore the announcement and stand outside the gates, that is not MLB's fault if they get caught up in a riot.

If the riots are still taking place near the stadium most people would have the common sense to go ahead and pass on the game on their own.

Wasn't part of it that the Baltimore PD didn't want to spare police for security? Maybe that was just a theory.

The point was that if the public was allowed to attend the game, the PD would have to be allocated to the stadium. By not having fans there, no police are needed.

And yet fans showed up any way and stood out side. Which makes the whole ordeal rather silly. I rather doubt that the fans had police security watching out for/over them on the out side. And if they did that would just make it even more ridiculous.

There's a bit of a difference between a couple hundred fans and 30 thousand of them.

With everything going on do you really think 30,000 fans would have shown up?

I don't know, I just see rioting and looting and mayhem running rampant WITH police presence. I cannot see what difference a lack of police presence at a mid day sporting event would have on a few thousand obviously die hard baseball fans. I can't see the fans being any less safe in the stadium than they currently are out side of it.
