It appears James Jones is on his way out in Oakland.

Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie informed the former Packers standout, once considered a centerpiece of their 2014 free-agent class, of his impending release over the weekend, according to a CSN Bay Area report.

In one season with the Raiders, Jones had a ton of targets (112) and a solid number of receptions (73) but hasn't come close to replicating the 14-touchdown campaign he had with the Packers back in 2012 that helped vault him into free agency.

Plus, it looks like the 31-year-old is getting squeezed out with the additions of receivers Michael Crabtree and first-round draft pick Amari Cooper.

Cutting Jones would save the Raiders nearly $3.5 million, according to league records, which probably put McKenzie over the edge. Jones' salary-cap number was bigger than any other receiver on the roster.

The veteran should have no problem receiving a camp invite, albeit at a lower salary. Over 16 games last season, it didn't seem like Jones was running on empty.

Personally, we'd love to see him back in Green Bay putting up almost a touchdown per game.

Apparently he didn't want to be #4 on the depth chart.

Three years ago, yes. Now? Meh. Is he better than Chris Conley or Da'Rick Rogers? If so, then bring him in.

Okay, the Da'Rick Rogers suckfest is getting to be too much for me. If this is the level I have to compete with, then I want off of this wagon.

It's still a toss-up if Rogers will even make the team.

Actually he doesn't. Id argue he's better than our whole QB roster

If he can't beat out Frankie Hammond, jr. (and I'm not stating that he can or can't), he has no future in the NFL.

How many WRs do the Chiefs a carry? The only ones that are locks right now are Maclin, Wilson, and Conley

Certainly more promising. Sweet god, that list of Chiefs QB's reads like a can of Spam-Vomit.

I wish we had kept him. He did just drop to #3 on the depth chart, though. In addition to Cooper & Crabtree, now they brought in one of Carr's old pals at WR from Fresno State to compete as well.

Do you have season tickets in Oakland?

If not, how many games to attend each year?

The money is already allotted for Houston. If we sign Houston long-term, his cap number most likely goes down this year.

73 catches for 600 some yards on those targets is horrible. Should be an easy 900-1000 yards. Kelce caught 68 for 800 some. That's how bad Jones is.

Current WR depth chart

Maclin locked in starter
Wilson/DAT fairly similar profile, likely battling for most of the slot snaps
Conley/Rogers, similar physical profile, would bet Chiefs are looking for one of these two to emerge as legit outside WR2
Avant/Hemingway/Hammond, deep depth and/or STers

the 5/6 spots to me will come from Rogers/Avant/Junior/Frankie, and anyone else is fodder or PS material. I'd bet Avant still sticks unless Rogers or Jr/Frankie really show very well in camp.

James Jones is not a better option than any of these guys honestly. he's a bum...

If the choice is between Avant and Jones, Jones wins in a landslide.

That said, neither should be on the Chiefs roster in 2015.

A caller brought this up on Sirius today and the analysts which are MUCH more knowledgeable than us said the Chiefs would be a better team with Jones on the roster.
