View Full Version : Home and Auto Nice, affordable communities in driving distance to Kansas City?

My mom has been living in Kansas City for a few years now, but isn't altogether familiar with the surrounding communities.

She's lived in upscale condos, but her longtime boyfriend(high school sweetheart and been together since my parents divorce almost 20 years ago) recently passed.

She doesn't need all the space, or the nearly $2300/mo for rent, HOA fees, utilities, etc anymore.

She'd like to get to a more affordable area where she can buy a decent/nice condo for probably under $120,000. Sounds like she might even be open to renting, but I can't imagine there'd be many 2 bedroom places for under $800/mo.

Anyone have suggestions for nice, safe smaller communities outside of KC that would fit the bill? Know any landlords with any such property to rent?

She's okay with a drive of up to a half an hour as she still works in KC.

Any help would be appreciated. Leave suggestions and comments in the thread, any specifics can be PM'd. Thanks in advance.

Gardner is nice. They went through a huge housing boom back in the day, and many were repossessed. Lots of nice houses for cheap.

Your suggestions are already paying off. She's found a few to look at already and is getting a bit more excited.

Don't think she thought the money would go that far in the areas surrounding KC.

Keep them coming. Love that you can always count on this place!

When I did an internship in Kansas City I lived in the Northland and really liked it. Kearney would be my choice of an area - country feel, but big enough as well.

Blue Springs is nice, and reasonably priced. About a 20 minute drive in good conditions to downtown. Not sure what rush hour is like since I drive to JoCo for work.

You can find all kinds of housing in the Northland and it's a 10-15 minute commute to downtown.

Buy a cheap house in Wyandotte and use the money she saves to buy a nice assault rifle.

Northland: Gladstone, Liberty, Staley area.

I grew up in Gladstone. This whole area is developing nicely.

This. A good friend of mine bought a condo right around your mom's price point up there.

If she wants to look on the Kansas side, Basehor and Bonner Springs offer some nice places that are reasonable.

The Staley area is growing nicely too as well. Noticed there are new homes and there was the new school in there as well.

Might be considering living in that area, or very close to it when the time comes.

Having lived in Bonner and worked at Basehor, I can also confirm this as well. Piper isn't too shabby either as well.

that's the only drawback to the north of the river, it's great going into town, but kind of pain to get around in the northland.

...was there for 10 years, and yeah, nice area to live.

Two of my sibling live in there. I was just back for my Niece's graduation from Staley (10th graduating class). Really nice school. Great, great music program.

They had the fricken KC Philharmonic backing up their end of year show. It was really something and the kids were talented and they knew what they were doing.

Its also Kansas City, Mo. I dont know why everyone keeps calling it the Staley area. The history is Staley Farms on the National Historic register. My uncle took a job there working the farm as a teen to help my Grandparents before being shipped off to the Army and WWII.

If move there your gonna pay KCMO taxes that will be sunk into that shithole midtown where money is pouring in and nothing happens.

Yes I'm familier with area, and I concur with your statement definitely stay out of KCMO and be sure to tell the realtor that this is not negotiable when looking for a property in the area.

We had a very nice townhouse in Belton. I never really understood the hate, we enjoyed our couple years there. Would have been there longer had we not up and moved the South Carolina.

Unless she needs to live that close, you could look a little further out, like say Warrensburg. Could get a lot of bang for your buck there.
