WWE is deeply saddened that Virgil Runnels, aka “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes — WWE Hall of Famer, three-time NWA Champion and one of the most captivating and charismatic figures in sports entertainment history — passed away today at the age of 69.

Photos: Dusty's career-defining moments

Runnels became a hero to fans around the world thanks to his work ethic, his impassioned interviews and his indomitable spirit. Moreover, Runnels was a dedicated father to WWE Superstars Goldust (Dustin Runnels) and Stardust (Cody Runnels), a caring husband and a creative visionary who helped shape the landscape of WWE long after his in-ring career had ended.

WWE extends its sincerest condolences to Runnels’ family, friends and colleagues.

Somebody linked to the story of his death on Facebook from a wrestling blog, but the picture that showed up on the hot link was from a blog post about Harley Race's wrestling school that was written right before the Dusty Rhodes story. Admittedly, I didn't watch wrestling in the 60's, so I just assumed it was him. I only know Dusty Rhodes because of Goldust.

Wow, 69 is pretty young in this day and age... yet fairly long lived for a wrestler.

I remember Dusty from the old KPLR tv in St. Louis, along with guys like Bulldog Bob Brown, Kerry Von Erich, King Kong Brody, Wahoo McDaniel, "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka and all the rest.

Now THAT was some wrasslin, long before the big money came along, those guys truly earned every dollar they made... RIP American Dream.

I vaguely remember him from my brief fanship of wrestling at about the age of 7. My favorite wrestlers around that time were Rene Goulet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rene_Goulet (very acrobatic), Ivan Putski http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Putski (biggest muscles I'd ever seen at that point), and Haystacks Calhoun http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haystacks_Calhoun (the largest human I'd ever seen at that point).

Later I discovered Andre the Giant, and how could you not like Andre the Giant?

His morbid obesity had more to do with his death than his profession, which in this isolated incident is fairly significant.

Actually, that's not true at all. Dusty died because of numerous injuries sustained from a fall (http://www.wrestlinginc.com/wi/news/2015/0611/596179/details-on-dusty-rhodes-death/).

BTW, there are several "old-time" wrestlers who are very much alive and older than Dusty was:

Nick Bockwinkel is 80
Mr. Fuji is 80
Bruno Sammartino is 79
George "The Animal" Steele is 78
Harley Race is 72

Not older than Dusty was, but a contemporary: Rick Flair is 66. For reference, Hulk Hogan is 61.

There are more, but those are names I think most of us would recognize. What is the one thing these guys have in common is that all of them wrestled in the area where you didn't have the best body in the world (pre-steroids), you just had to be somewhat athletic and big. I also think that the older style of wrestling (where you seldom saw moves off the top rope) was safer.

I'm sure the obesity and mountains of cocaine didn't really help matters.

That's interesting. IMO, Rhodes would not be a star today because of his physique.
