View Full Version : Life Calling all wrenches...

The subject is a 2004 HD Sportster 1200C.

The problem is that when I go to start the bike I get nothing more than a single click. Not a series of clicks... just one. The lights do not dim and the engine makes no attempt to turn over. I got a new battery (needed one anyhow) but the same thing happened.

Thoughts or ideas?

Conversely... can anyone recommend an honest mechanic in Denver?

Flush your brake fluid. Seems you have bubbles in your system.

Sounds like you aren't drinking enough antifreeze

But yeah check your starting solenoid and the cable that runs from the battery to the solenoid

You need to build a dog ramp, then roll the bike down the dog ramp and try to start the bike while it is rolling.

Starter or corroded battery cables.

This^ would be the first items to check. I would also have the battery checked even though it is new. Maybe you got a lemon. Also do you have a battery tender?

Flux capacitor. Make sure you calibrated it for "Cunnus".

I don't know much about how Harley's start, but I know with some cars the neutral safety switch will give up.

Now if the Harley will let you start it in gear without the clutch engaged then move on because that's clearly not the problem. But if the bike will only let you start it from P/N or from gear if the clutch is engaged, it's possible that your neutral safety switch has given up the ghost and the bike thinks you're in gear even when you're not. If that's the case, it's not going to let the starter motor engage.

I wonder - some bikes will kick the motor off when you put the kickstand down if you're in gear (I'm pretty sure my Honda Shadow did and my Vulcan presently does). Does the Harley do that? If so, could you try to roll start it, come to a stop, put it in neutral and then kick the kickstand down? If your neutral safety switch is shot, even when the bike was in neutral, it will kill the motor when you put the kickstand down (again, because it thinks you're in gear).

I'm just spitballing, but it's a bit of far out there but if the battery/starter stuff isn't working, it's a possibility that you might not have considered.
