Well, Aaron Crow certainly won't be pitching to Daniel Nava with a three-run lead and the bases loaded... so that helps.

They also can't try to go lefty on lefty vs. David Ortiz with Tim Collins, which also helps...

Even with a make-shift rotation, the Royals should be able to handle this series pretty easily.

Pino is the same guy as Blanton / Guthrie / Vargas / Young to an extent.

As long as he throws strikes and keeps the ball in the yard, our defense will make him look a lot better than he is.

If our offense scores 4 or 5 runs, we should be ok. Fortunately, our offense is on a nice little hot streak right now.

The same team that tried "closer by committee" thought "Hey, we don't need a #1 or #2 starter. We can win with a bunch of #4s and #5s. We'll just pay them like aces, and that'll do the trick."

You've got to love that sort of stubbornness.

I actually like Pino a little bit more than Blanton/Guthrie/Vargas from a talent prospective ... He has looked to have pretty good raw stuff in the outings I've seen this year. Good breaking pitch and good fastball command.

But by them mentioning how overpaid the Boston roster is, we can then bring up the fact they owe Rick Porcello $25 million/year for the next 4 years.

Yup. That's right. That bum Porcello got a $100 million contract.

Pitching is expensive, he got the market rate. If he pitches at his past average he will earn that contract.

I'd hate to have a guy who flipped Cashner for Rizzo and then built a team featuring:

Hootie
06-19-2015, 12:05 PM
oh, only 4 years $82.5M (just looked it up)

what a steal !

would you guys rather have 4 years of Porcello at $4M (total) or 4 years of Chris Young at $8M (total)?

Honestly?

Give me Chris Young. Hahaha.

But that is at $1M per year. Imagine extending Vargas to another $82.5M LMAO

$20 million/year is the market rate for a legit front of the rotation starter.

A King Felix, Kershaw, Price, Hamels, Cueto, Wainwright, Jon Lester, etc.

It is nowhere close to the market rate for a back-end guy who doesn't strike out anyone and who - if he has a good defense behind him and good BABIP luck - tops out as a solid No. 3 type starter.

The Red Sox significantly overpaid for a pitcher who has only posted one full season ERA under 4.00 in his career while playing in a pitcher's park in a weaker division, who had a 4.51 career ERA entering his contract season and a career 5.45 K/9 rate.

It's honestly one of the dumbest contracts I've ever seen.

Not sure, but I don't quite understand the hate Sandoval is getting. Saying he's not living up to his contract and is playing just oh so bad. Did they think they were getting Barry Bonds or somethings?

He's batting .270 with .734 OPS. Last year he hit .279 with a .739 OPS. His OPS had declined every year since 2010. He's an overweight 3B who won't age well but he's playing to his recent level of production, for the most part.

Their rotation is an epic disaster, and the offense hasn't been nearly as good as expected.

Betts and Castillo are major disappointments so far, Ortiz has fallen off considerably, Sandoval has just been OK, and they have a lot of aging/declining guys in general.

Betts is a 22 year old converting to CF and hitting .257 while learning on the job. I think his situation is more a matter of unrealistic expectations than him being a truly disappointing player. Swihart's catching in the bigs before he was ready because of the injuries at the position, too, so I wouldn't criticize him. However,

Ortiz
Napoli
Ramirez, post-shoulder
Castillo
Craig
Victorino
Sandoval, in the field
Nava

Have all either been injured or big disappointments, to date. The only players in the lineup that are really getting it done are Pedroia, Holt (Utility player and semi-starter) and Bogaerts.

And, dear God, you are so right about that starting rotation. The bullpen is thin, too.

Not saying he's bad or has been a bust, but he hasn't played to expectations after having a great month or so in his debut last year and a great spring.

People were expecting him to be an elite top of the lineup hitter immediately, and he has not been.

You would think all the Royals had to do was simply sit on the fastball. He hardly ever throws breaking pitches. It's against pitcher like this that the Royals just go into a shell against.

Tried it when I went to the Chiefs Titans game a couple years ago in Nashville. I was glad when the liquor store near my house started carrying it.

Guys, the first run was acting as a point of resistance for the team. Now that they have surpassed it, they will obviously go on a run scoring spree. If they should fall below one run, however, they will go on a terrible negative run streak.

He's thrown a few sliders and changeups. Mostly just fastballs. It's a wonder to me why the Royals aren't just sitting on his 80% fastball rate.
