KANSAS CITY, Mo. - KSHB-TV, Kansas City's 41 Action News station, announced Thursday that sports director Jack Harry will retire on June 30, 2015. Harry has been covering sports in Kansas City for more than 40 years. Jack, who was named sports director at KSHB in 2002, has been a dedicated and valuable part of the station and the Kansas City community. He has won numerous awards for quality broadcast journalism, having been inducted as a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid-America Chapter’s Silver Circle in 2011.

“Jack has been a staple in this city for a long time. His knowledge and passion for Kansas City sports will be missed,” said Carrie Hofmann, KSHB news director.

In addition, the station announced Frank Boal will assume the role of 41 Action News sports director. Frank has been with KSHB since 2010 after spending the previous 28 years at WDAF-TV. Dee Jackson was named weekend sports anchor.

Jackson has been part of the 41 Action News sports team since 2013. Both Jackson and Boal begin their new roles on July 1, 2015.

Scripps is one of the nation’s largest independent TV station owners, with 33 television stations in 24 markets and a reach of nearly one in five U.S. households.

It also owns 34 radio stations in eight markets. When Scripps and the former Journal Communications merged their broadcast assets in early 2015, they also spun off their respective newspapers, creating a new public company, Journal Media Group.

Scripps also runs an expanding collection of local and national digital journalism and information businesses, including mobile video news service Newsy and weather app developer WeatherSphere. Scripps also produces television shows including The List and The Now, runs an award-winning investigative reporting newsroom in Washington, D.C., and serves as the long-time steward of the nation’s largest, most successful and longest-running educational program, the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Founded in 1878, Scripps has held for decades to the motto, “Give light and the people will find their own way.”

He was no Bruce Rice.

I remember when that dip shit came on the scene as a sports reporter. He tried to be Bruce Rice but wasn't fit to sniff his shorts. Good riddance your stay was far to long in this town.

He became Ch. 5's sports director when Bruce Rice died from heart after a Chiefs' @ Pittsburgh in Oct. 78. Channel 5 let him go about 15 years ago in one of the station's youth movements. What very few know about the guy is he had 5 kids whose age range from their late 40's to their early 20's (16 yr gap between kid #2 and kid #3) and I think all with one wife. I guess his youngest is finally out of college.

He didn't say he's retiring from being on K's radio show. I assume we'll still hear him on there.

Ok, I know he was really opinionated and prone to a little hyperbole, but I don't get all the hatred. He was the only local TV news reporter even worth ever listening to. That might be a low bar to clear, but I know if noticed the local sports was about to come on, I might flip over to hear what he had to say about the latest Chiefs loss. I wasn't checking what Al Wallace or Mr. Blandy on the other channel was saying. He rooted for the home team and bitched about them they sucked...same as we do here.

What are the specific gripes...lemme guess...Mizzou fans think he hates Mizzou and sucks off the Jayhawks, and KU fans think he hates KU and sucks off Mizzou...

Good riddance. I remember him sucking at the teat of Bruce Rice. Rice was an exemplary journalist that died too young. Dumbass couldn't hold Rice's jock. Somehow the current environment kept him employed. There's nothing to pass on from his knowledge and "journalism."

No...Don Fortune retired in the late '90s & moved to FL.

I think Mike Thompson/Phil Witt will probably be the next KC newscasters to retire. They are both 60+.
