It's time for me to bow out. It's been almost 10 years, and I'm tired.

Tired of the false narratives. Tired of people arguing the poster instead of the post. Tired of discussing football with people who favor excuses over evidence. Tired of wasting time talking about an organization that hasn't won a playoff game in the lifetime of a college senior. Tired of watching other great posters leaving entirely or posting less, weakening the Football IQ this place was known for 5-10 years ago.

I know posting a thread instead of just walking away will open the door for many to take their cheap shots - we all know who they are - and if you don't, just wait. They'll show themselves. Those of you that know me privately know this has been building for a long time.

With all that said, I'll say what I've always said: This team has talent, but will continually fall short as long as they keep thinking you can win in the postseason consistently with average QB play. You don't put enough pressure on the opposing defense, and it puts too much pressure on your defense - if they don't have a near-perfect day, you lose.

Peters and Conley were great picks and should make an impact in the years to come. Should be fun to watch. (What? According to some, I NEVER say anything positive - just another false narrative) While I doubt he'll get his shot, I'd like to see if Murray can be that franchise guy, or if he fell for reasons other than what people here assume - namely, his height and injury history. Hopefully they get Houston signed long-term, because if they don't they are in deep, deep shit. The defense tends to carry this team, and Houston is the most important cog in said defense.

I've made a lot of great friends here that are still friends to this day, and will continue to be. This place was awesome when it was more community based - when there would be gatherings, tailgates, etc. Now, it's littered with trolls that take advantage of the anonymity of the internet and would never show their face in public. That attitude has weakened this place considerably, IMHO.

For those of you I call a friend, we'll be in touch. If anyone that isn't already a friend privately or on Facebook/Twitter wants to continue to keep in touch, I'll keep my PM's open for a week or so.

Thanks, Kyle. It was fun for a while. Queue the "well, bye/sour grapes" posts in 3...2...1.

Well, that's a shame but maybe it's best for you.

Besides the 2 mentions of Peters and Nelson in this leaving forever thread, I can't remember you saying much positive about anything to do with the Chiefs since they drafted Berry...before that....not sure when.

If your constant outlook is so negative, you probably aren't getting any enjoyment from it anymore and sometimes a break can renew your interest in something you have an emotional attachment to. I know I read last year that you stopped watching some of the games, so the years have probably taken their toll. I'm sure the Indy playoff loss took what wind you had build up, out of your sails.

It's a shame you're leaving, as we've had some heated discussions in the past and it's been fun discussing hot points with ya over the years.

That sucks... I'd suggest taking a break for a few months, which I've done several times. I don't really don't talk football much for a lot of those reasons, too... this place is here for my entertainment.

I don't think this place has changed much over 10 years though... discussions get tired no matter how smart the other people in the room are at the time and I've certainly changed quite a bit in the past decade and a half. I think the same stuff existed back then... we've lost regulars, but it's not like the percentage of smart people was significantly higher back then, but as a n00b you'll be more tolerant of it than if you've dealt with it for 10 or 15 years.

Not that it changes your decision, just sayin', there was just as much stupid stuff in the days of young Clay and Slayer than there is now, which is probably even more reason to bow out at some point.

Actually, I think we've had an influx of pretty solid football posters the last couple of years. There's always a handful of complete dipshits, but a lot of those are guys who were here before OTW58 started.

He's just being pissy because people are actually excited to see this team in action for the 2015 season versus busting on Alex Smith 24/7, of which he's always been a major proponent of since the trade. (You can see this in the OP - defense carrying the team, etc.)

Back to back winning seasons and a real shot this year and he's bailing because he's left holding the tar bucket and bag of feathers with only two or three complete dingleberries standing behind him.

Well, to everyone but people like you and OTW58 and the like who will continue to post negative blather because the team didn't have the brains and balls to draft someone like Johnny Manziel or Brandon Weeden.

See, I was ready to come in here and light your ass up like the Griswold house at Christmas, but the truth of the matter is that if ChiefsPlanet is becoming a drain on you and your being a fan, it's probably best to step away for a bit. And I do mean "for a bit", because you and I know that this place is internet crack and nobody not named Mr. Blonde stays away permanently. Step back, take a breath, and hop back in when we celebrate Alex Smith being league MVP with his 4,781 yd, 39 TD, 9INT season. :D

"No ones left to crush the Chiefs and these idiot Planeteers with every single post, too bad the Four Horsemen arent around anymore to obliterate all in their path".

I genuinely dont get it, leaving NOW... just as this club is about to become meaningful again, best overall roster since the days of Marty.

I guess I'd say that as far as message boards go, this one has the most truth to it. You have your homers and you also have a lot of people that spew negativity. Everyone has a different opinion and yes, some people may blast you for it. Go to other forums and it's pure homers so I'll take the good with the bad here. There's an ignore feature for a reason or you could just choose to not engage in the drama.

You're tired of spending 2-3 minutes typing a post? I mean, I could understand if this was the old days and you spent 3 hours constantly dipping your pen into a bottle of ink, hovering over a piece of hemp, while holding your breath so not to blow out the candle barely illuminating your desk. Arguments make us more intelligent and healthier. You are not always right, but you are not always wrong. Hearing the other side is an instrumental product in mental growth. Have fun hanging out with people that sit around and say "yep, yep, absolutely right" to everything that comes out of your mouth. This board, just like the rest of the world, has and always will have morons inhabiting it. I don't know you so this is clearly an argument against the post, not the poster. But I look forward to seeing your celebratory post sometime in January 2016 after we win a playoff game.

Yep. My Chiefs apathy is at an all time high. Until they win a freaking playoff game there is nothing to be positive or happy about.

It's not just winning one playoff game - but building a team the way the Royals have done. I feel like we were on the right path, but pissed away a few good players and then stopped drafting well. A team of also-rans that goes 10-6 and wins one playoff game isn't going to do a lot to shake me out of my Chiefs torpor I feel.

I just read Billay's "Andy Reid" thread, and it was hilarious. OTWP tried to attack Reid/Dorsey by making statements that were, to put it mildly, factually incorrect. To put it accurately, they were outright lies.

When other posters called him on it, OTWP decided to get all pissy about it and leave.

OTWP, hate to see you bail, but I get it. I frequent here less and less myself. Perhaps it's the off season? As I've gotten older, and as the NFL has gotten greedier, it's been harder and harder to be a passionate fan of the league, let alone the Chiefs. Anyhow, I've always hated the leaving forever threads. It's ok to leave, come back, take a break, whatever, but I hope you don't really bow out permanently. If so, enjoy the season man.

That's disappointing, though like a few others, I do question the narrative a little bit here.

This board hasn't become a 'homer' board. Admittedly the mood is more optimistic than it has been in many MANY years (perhaps ever), but shouldn't that be the case?

For the sake of discussion, let's just briefly set aside the QB position (we'll get back to it, don't worry). Is it a stretch at all to say that this is the most talented team overall that we've seen in 25 years? I can't speak to the old timers, but that's my duration as a fan and to my eyes, this team has more ability at more places than any Chiefs team of my lifetime.

Sure, it has holes, but welcome to a cap league. Every team has holes. I'd like to have an established #2 WR. I'd like to have a steadier OL and Ted Backer. But hey - scarce resources; you take what you can get. And at least we have some high upside plays in those thinner positions.

As to the QB position - I think it was Boss that said it, but if you just cannot enjoy any Chiefs team because we have an average QB, then perhaps he's right - stepping away may be the way to go. Yeah, he's a boring option that does little to elevate his teams but we're 3 years down the road now. If you're still carping about Alex Smith when he's been a solid but unspectacular QB for us, you're not going to be happy so I guess you're better served divesting, at least until the Chiefs make the play at QB that you'd like to see made (and c'mon, with Andy Reid here, I do expect they'll make that play when they opportunity meets motivation).

Chiefsplanet's core constituency isn't any different than it's ever been, IMO. You still have about 25% of the board that's endlessly optimistic and another 25% of the board that's endlessly pessimistic. The 50% in the middle are what control the character of the board. Right now that 50% is pretty happy with where the team is trending. Even people like Dane and me that have generally sided very much on the negative side of the ledger are very excited about the direction of the team. That's not being a homer - that's simply appreciating the efforts of a competent leadership team.

There are still smart posters here (especially now that I'm back for a spell), but CP is actually less of an echo chamber than it was 4 years ago. The membership hasn't changed as much as the outlooks of the members has, and with good cause, IMO.

Right, but that's because there's been ample cause for it.

It wasn't populated by 75% pessimistic posters, it's just that the 50% in the middle were given good reason to be down on the team's prospects.

Now the opposite is true. There are good reasons to be excited about the upcoming season and the 50% in the middle are probably 35-15 to the favorable side right now. So when you add in the original 25% eternal optimists, you're looking at a 60/40 lean towards the positive side of the ledger right now.

Neg repping is a pretty cowardly way to attack somebody. If someone doesn't have the balls to post his criticism in the public threads, he doesn't have any business hiding behind a neg rep.

But I wouldn't let a single poster run me off just because he neg repped me. I've received a few neg reps now and again myself.

I wanted us to trade for Alex Smith (but didn't want to spend more than a third to get him) AND draft a QB high in the draft. My preference was Geno Smith. I wanted Alex to be a placeholder for a young QBOTF. I even called for sitting Geno 2 years if we drafted him.

I've always been in the "draft the best QB you can and build around him" guy...and always will be. But, hey...we got Eric Fisher. I'm actually interested to see how Geno does with a creative OC in Chan Gailey and some weapons at WR to work with. The third year is when most QBs start to "get it" and if we had drafted him and developed him, who knows. I was probably wrong on that one, but hey. Can't win em all.

He (Geno Smith) threw six touchdown passes and three interceptions in the last six weeks of the 2014 season. His completion percentage in those games was 65.7 percent, which would place him in the top-10 in the league if he could do that over the course of a regular season. Over the last four weeks, Smith went 2-2 and threw for 358 yards, three scores and no picks in a 37-24 victory over Miami in the season finale.

Geno Smith was credited with having thrown 13 interceptions last season, which was middle of the pack in the NFL. 10 Quarterbacks threw more interceptions than Geno and that group included a lot of elite quarterbacks. Obviously throwing interceptions is just a small portion of the position but for the purpose of this article we're looking at it in vacuum.

Cian Fahey didn't just look at the interceptions, he charted every single pass that Geno threw and the results were quite interesting. Although these are subjective findings, after studying all 367 of Geno's throws, only 17 of them were deemed to be interceptable passes.

NFL.com:
Geno's lowest moment as a pro was the last memory most folks have of him. In an ugly Week 13 loss to Miami on Monday Night Football, Rex Ryan was so afraid of letting Smith actually play quarterback that the Jets only attempted 13 passes compared to 49 rushes. Rex told a national audience that he'd rather set offensive progress back 40 years than allow Smith to do his job.

And then suddenly Geno started to do his job quite well. In the last four games, Smith completed 65 percent of his passes for 1,001 yards, six touchdowns, and two picks. He averaged 9.2 yards-per-attempt over that stretch, tied for best in the league. By the time the Jets played Miami again in Week 17, Geno was virtually flawless.

I re-watched each Smith snap on the coaches film from Game Rewind to see how he pulled off this turnaround. Here are my biggest takeaways:

1. Geno excelled over the final month because of his decision-making. His biggest issue as a pro has been panicking when under duress and throwing passes up for grabs. He's prone to the brain freeze. In the final month, Smith calmly found the open receiver. When no one was open, he made plays with his legs or got rid of the ball.

2. One huge reason that Smith made good decisions: He had time. The Jets protected Smith very well over the final month, which allowed him to show off his strengths. Smith has a strong arm and methodically goes through his reads better than plenty of his young contemporaries. A big question: If protection isn't so ideal in 2015, can he still excel?

3. Geno got me fired up enough to write this because he owns skills that are difficult to teach. He has excellent pocket movement, buying time to attempt passes. Some quarterbacks never get that sixth sense in the pocket; Geno has it. He is not afraid to make difficult throws, aggressively pushing the ball down the field. He looks off defenders.

4. The Jets didn't ask Smith to do too much. He ran the offense and didn't take too many chances.

5. In Weeks 14-16, Smith played solid midlevel starter football. He mostly stayed out of the way. But in the season finale, Smith put together one of the best games by any quarterback all season, throwing for 358 yards on only 25 attempts. He threw receivers open and even his incompletions were on point. The game showed off his big arm and his touch.

The Gailey effect

December was fun and all, but Smith wouldn't make our list if not for the arrival of Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. In previous stops, Gailey has turned Tyler Thigpen into a starting fantasy option, helped Ryan Fitzpatrick get a $60 million contract and coached a Jay Fiedler-led Dolphins team to finish eighth in points scored.

Gailey accomplished all of the above by getting mediocre quarterbacks to play smart and get rid of the ball quickly. Smith has plenty of talent, and he certainly has the supporting cast. The Jets receiver posse -- Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley, second-round pick Devin Smith and tight end Jace Amaro -- form one of the deeper groups in the league.

Gailey has cooked up numbers with far less talent. His best offenses are similar to the one that Smith excelled in at West Virginia. It's almost like the Jets had a plan here.

To put it another way: Geno, like Alex Smith in Kansas City, will no longer be the guy to hold the team back.

The Franchise

Crazy how you remember that stuff.

I sent my message to Path and in less than 10 minutes, he was complaining about it in the thread as if I hadn't already said as much in the thread. Seems he checked his rep quite often and placed a lot of weight to it.

My rep was basically exactly what others here have told him in this thread...that if he can't enjoy the Chiefs (and he didn't, he even said he stopped watching some of the games) he might want to take a break.

The only reason I even sent him a neg was because he wanted to call names. After getting his bs thrown back at him...same as any other poster that claims that "the Chiefs were basically a .500 team before Reid/Dorsey got here that only had one bad year. It's not like they were bad for 5+ years"

C'mon man, anybody that says that is gonna get it questioned.

I totally agree. I know for me I hold no hope for this team winning anything until they address the most important position on the field. As far as this year I know alot of people here are optimistic about this team but they better hope they start out 2-2 or the season is over before it even begins.

Yet how many people wanted Dayton and Ned fired midseason last year?

LMAO

At most any point in the site's history, CP would have fired the Chiefs' head coach, chief's GM, flushed the whole staff, fired the Royals manager and GM, executed the owner, bencheded the Chiefs' starting QB, flushed most of the roster, and fired both Missouri and Kansas' football coaches. It's not affected by where a team is at the moment. There are few exceptions, like the Royals, but this place is massively, systemically pessimistic for some reason beyond what a middling team would expect. I absolutely agree but I don't think that truly happened until 2011.

I railed against the hiring of Pioli and Haley and absolutely hated their first draft, and people were like "WTF? Give it time. He's not the Executive of the Year for nothing, Bro!".

The real pessimism started in 2011, with the loss of Berry and Charles, the firing of Haley (the firing was justified and the right decision, IMO, although many against it) and the quick hiring of Crennel. And of course, we're all familiar with Eric's efforts, which grew into Save Our Chiefs, which ultimately led to the firing of Pioli's regime and the hiring of Dorsey and Reid.

Now, there's far too much impatience, especially for a team with two consecutive winning seasons, and a young roster, in which we've seen growth over the past two seasons, due to coaching. This franchise is finally headed in the right direction for the first time since 1989 but it seems that too many people "hate" them so much for the subpar seasons of yesteryear that they'll stop at nothing to remind everyone, ad nauseam, how bad they were in the past, as if that has any relevance to the present.

Yeah, but that's not how it goes. Any optimism is characterized as stupid, even cautious optimism when it's warranted.

This isn't a team that goes 4-12 every year, it often has winning records and sometimes makes playoff appearances. Sure, everyone wants more, but people acting like the team makes 0% of their decisions correctly is dumb.

Guys like RunKC and staylor26 who consistently bash people because they question about if a player can do something or not (i.e. Chris Conley is the steal of the draft! Go put him on Alabama's offense and he would have caught 26 TDs!!!). For every pessimist who clouds the pool......there's another optimist doing the same fucking thing.

Because alot of us are tired of being a middling team. We have seen to many teams go from shit to being in the SB in a matter of 2-3 years yet this team hasn't won a playoff since 1993. It is embarrassing.
So, your realistic expectation was to go from 2-14 to a Super Bowl in 2 years?

This team is gonna win a playoff game this year.

I just ignore them, seriously, by skimming over their posts or by using the Ignore function. Inmem was an insufferable prick that I had on ignore for months, so it wasn't even until a thread was started that I realized he had wore out his welcome, not just with me, but with everyone.

The bottom line is somewhere in the middle for me: There's a really good chance this could be an epic season and yet, there's a really good chance that it could be another somewhat disappointing season.

But from my POV, the glass is more than half full regarding my expectations for 2015 and beyond under Dorsey & Reid, regardless of the current QB, which seems to be where all the fuss is concentrated.

This logic pisses me off and it's not just because you're the one espousing it; it's a common as dirt narrative.. and I already know how you're going to counter this so go ahead and flame a-fucking-way:

Your realistic expectation was to go from 10-6 to a Super Bowl in four years?

Now, there's far too much impatience, especially for a team with two consecutive winning seasons, and a young roster, in which we've seen growth over the past two seasons, due to coaching. This franchise is finally headed in the right direction for the first time since 1989 but it seems that too many people "hate" them so much for the subpar seasons of yesteryear that they'll stop at nothing to remind everyone, ad nauseam, how bad they were in the past, as if that has any relevance to the present.

Patience would be easier to have if they were breaking in a young quarterback. But you go out and trade for "franchise QB" who was 28/29, that's a win fucking now move. So you better win and win big. Especially with a roster that was talented to begin with, just needed coaching which Reid provided.

and then there's me... A guy who understands that the level of optimism or pessimism has absolutely no bearing on jack shit.

We haven't even had a full pad practice let alone play a game. The crowing about what we'll do this season is more about the need for someone to inflate their obviously depleted ego.

Exactly.

A huge portion of CP thinks this is just "another time going to the same movie expecting it to end differently" and IMO nothing could be further from the truth.

Fair enough but I am one that doesn't do that.

If you look at the last 10 years this team is 75-101. They are more likely to go 4-12 than 10-6.

Carl and Herm are long gone. Pioli and Haley and Romeo are long gone. That history is completely unrelated to the decision makers with the team today.

I think they have exceeded expectations, looking at the big picture.

So quickly people forget how bad this team was. Banners, Cassel getting cheered when he got hurt, being a punch line on South Park, the whole Belcher scenario, candy wrappers, constantly getting blown out...this team and franchise was a joke.

They made the win now move (as you pointed out) and have won 20 games in 2 years for a team that only won 29 games in the previous 6 seasons combined.

They have done so while replacing the overrated and overpaid talent we had with younger and cheaper players.

Talent was in place. Piss poor management and coaching doesn't discount when your best players are already on the team and coming into their prime. They won 7 games with fucking Tyler Palko and Kyle Orton at the helm. Reid got them back on track to win 10 games which is what the team is built for. Its never going to be a Super Bowl contender because of Alex Smith. So we are back to Marty era again, which is fine but don't expect anymore out of it.

Of course we had talent, we had like 6 probowlers on a 2 win team.

Trouble is, that talent was paper thin and outside of maybe 10 players, the team needed to hit the restart button.

Reid and Dorsey identified the guys they saw as the core for the long term building of a contender and is building around them while moving on from everyone else.

So far, it's worked out very well for them.

This team is getting built to be a monster in the playoffs, not like Marty's teams...which were almost always one sided.

I understand how that could apply to some. But keep in mind, Dorsey and Reid have upgraded the talent in all three phases of the game, mostly through the draft but also through the waiver wire (Parker & Jaye Howard come to mind).

They did what was necessary to immediately turn around this franchise in 2013 by trading for a solid, veteran QB. Had they chosen to draft an EJ Manuel or Geno Smith, this team would have been 4-12 at best or 8-24 over the past two seasons, leaving the fans even further disgruntled and apathetic.

Dorsey & Reid's history shows that they will address the QB position but that they'll also be patient in doing so. Meanwhile, the core of this team will continue to ascend through coaching and experience.

IMO, it's no different than what happened in Seattle, although the Chiefs current starter is much better than Tavaris Jackson or (LOL), Charlie Whitehurst.

This team had a handful of talent on defense and Jamaal Charles. That was it. Go look at the 2012 roster and you'll see.

Our WR's sans Bowe weren't good at all.
Our OL sans Hudson and an injury prone Albert wasn't good.
Our TE's sucked
Our DL was okay
Our entire secondary sans Berry and Flowers was absolute garbage.

This team had a ton of holes and only a few very talented players.
