If you have Billy Butler speed-like, and that ball was grounded sharply right at the 1st basemen, you're most likely will get thrown out at 3rd.

That's exactly what happened.

And that took out a RISP.

I'm sure he did everything right, except for some reason he thought he was Jarrod Dyson.

I'm sorry, but everyone talks about situational hitting, and situational running also has to apply here.

Seriously, if you're not a fast runner at the base, and the ball was hit sharply at the 1st baseman, in your mind, it's saying you shouldn't go because most likely you will get thrown out.

If it was Jarrod Dyson or anybody else with average speed, that player would most likely would have been safe at 3rd, or at least a much closer play at 3rd.

I had to go look it up, but those were the moments I thought we could win it all because we had an ace. Of course the playoffs didn't turn out that way.

Won a 1-0 game in Yankee Stadium against Pineda. Threw 8 innings and allowed 3 hits, 6 K.

Followed that up with a 3-0 win at Detroit. Pitched 7 innings, only allowed 2 hits, 8 K.

Between the two games pitched 15.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 14 K. He also threw a complete game 4 hitter a couple weeks before that against the Giants.

Gentlemen we are watching a "gem" tonight!

In the baseball vernacular, broadcasters and writers use the term "Gem" regularly to describe a pitching masterpiece: "Felix Hernandez pitched a gem last night in the Mariners’ 2-1 victory over the Tigers." Bill James took that term and gave it a definition. The end result is an improvement on Quality Start and a way to highlight the best pitching performances.

A Gem is a game in which the starting pitcher earns a Game Score of at least 65 or throws six or more innings of shutout baseball. For the mathematically inclined, we’ll go over the definition of Game Score at the end of the Stat of the Week, but first let’s show some examples of what a 65 looks like. Shaun Marcum earned a Game Score of exactly 65 in his start last Tuesday against the Mets. He went 6.0 innings, struck out one and allowed two hits, no earned runs, and four walks. Kyle Kendrick’s start against the Braves on May 7 also earned a Game Score of exactly 65. He threw 5.0 innings, struck out three and allowed two hits, no earned runs and one walk. Both of those games qualify as gems, albeit at the lowest end of the Game Score spectrum.

We're already over $120 million. To sign all those guys probably pushes it up over $150 at least, even if you fill RF from within. Even if they cut Guthrie and some of the dead weight, there's a lot of salary to throw around.

We are already in the Cardinals range, and the Royals don't charge the ticket prices the Cards do. Nor is the stadium as big.

duncan_idaho
08-10-2015, 10:10 PM
Re: resigning players, it comes down to this for me... I think the Royals have a good shot to re-sign at least one of Gordon or Zobrist and a slim chance to keep both. Keeping Cueto would fall into the slim chance category as well, IMO. And keeping all three just seems like crazy town talk.

That slim chance of keeping Gordon and Zobrist, you're probably talking 5 years, $95-100 million for Gordon, 3-4 years, $45-55 million for Zobrist, or Cueto for a total cash commitment of 5 years, $150 million.

To me, if you're going to aim big, the safer bet is to aim big for Zobrist and Gordon. Because you're spreading the money out over two players, there is less risk... and they probably add more overall value on a yearly basis and over the course of the deals.

Hootie

Fair enough.

My point is, Glass bought a team for $92M. He could probably sell it for $1B if he really tried. I'm not kidding, I think those Forbes valuations are a joke. He's also 2 years from a MASSIVE tv contract. He can spend money. He can operate at a loss for two years to "keep the band together" if he wants. He still has made a ridiculous ROI on his investment

Yeah, but then he has to sell the team to make up the losses. Maybe he wants to do that, I have no idea.

I've never had the impression that Glass was insanely rich, like say Mike Ilitch, who's worth billions. If he's only worth 500-800 million or so, he's not going to lose $50 million a year on the team. No businessperson is going to do that. Wayne Huizenga did it for that one year with the Marlins, won the World Series, and said screw this and sold the team. I don't know how much Glass is worth though, he's super rich but I think the impression was always that he was not a billionaire like Ilitch or Pohlad. Or the people who own the Dodgers.

I think Gordo has to be the first priority (from both a practical and PR standpoint), followed closely by Zo.

Don't we get Rios and Infante off our payroll after this year?

Looking at all the Blue I see when in KC and the crowds I see every night I'd have to think they are doing pretty well. I'll never be a billionaire, but to me if you buy a team you do so to compete. Take a hit for a few years and when it starts to fade sell the farm. I'm happy with the moves this year, but I would be more happy if the gave it a solid run a few years after as well. It may not be realistic, but it's what I'd like to see :)

Rios.

Infante is still here until 2018 due to the club option, which I believe they will decline it.

Rios yes. We have Infante for two more years. Which looks rough now, but at the time looked great considering we'd been trotting Getz out there.

Rios, yes. Infante, no.

But a lot of players will get raises in arbitration (Holland, Dyson, Hosmer, Moustakas, Cain, Duffy), and several have escalating salaries (Ventura, Perez, Escobar, Herrera, Medlen).

So it's not quite as simple as saying "This salary clears up!"

He pocketed money from the Steinbrenner's for years.

If the Royals win the WS their won't be as much pressure to resign. However, if we don't, Glass will be playing with fire if he resigns no one.

@BHIndepMO: Overall, Matt Boyd threw 36 fastballs, 22 of 36 for strikes. KC swung at 19 of those fastballs and didn't miss a single time.

@J_K_Ward: Moustakas has an OPS under .550 since the beginning of July. Only regular that is lower is Omar Infante. Rios is at .710. #Royals

Man, I guess Matheny needs to hold a few more prayer sessions and get that team to loosen up. And half the fan base needs it as well.

I'm going Friday...I think Guthrie is scheduled.
Will probably be just as electric.

I'll be there also. We should have a beer.

I think we're doing pretty darn well considering we're one of the 2 or 3 smallest markets. My favorite part of this chart is the Dodgers having almost $90M in dead money.

These numbers don't seem right. Look at the Cardinals...half of their payroll is unaccounted for.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus complained to plate umpire Joe West that Cueto’s delivery was illegal, saying Cueto was stopping in his windup.

“Really, the way the rule reads, you’re not supposed to even alter your motion,” Ausmus said. “That’s the way the rule reads. They don’t enforce it. Well, he said if he stops it’s an illegal pitch.”

There were two pitches where he legitimately stopped his wind up for a half second. I didn't know it was illegal, I thought it was awesome. But he did do it a couple times so Ausmaus isn't in the wrong to bitch if it is.

Pan con Bistec?

I filmed a punk show back in November and Plantain District set up inside. Just when you think you've seen it all, there were punks banging through the pit holding Cuban sandwiches.
