dWAR is fine, but it needs a tremendous amount of data to be reliable.

Just like we don't pay attention to 3 weeks of OPS data, but after a full season it starts to become real, just 1 season of advanced defensive stats is not enough, you need about 3 or 4 seasons before it starts to become real.

You could also just use your eyes while keeping range in mind so you don't punish rangey guys, but the computers can do it too, they just need a metric ton of data, more than offense.

Also, it is especially difficult for the advanced defensive stats to measure 1B defense. In the OF you can plot where the fielder was, where the ball was hit to, how hard that play should be, etc. Same for the other infield positions.

At 1B, a spectacular pick is the same as a routine catch of a well-thrown ball as far as the stats are able to see. You need several seasons before the stats catch on to the fact that this 1B is recording more outs and fewer errors than expected.
