Kansas City Chiefs place Paul Fanaika on IR, which ends his season
By Joel Thorman  @JoelThorman on Sep 9, 2015, 11:21a 1 1

Didn't see this coming. Paul Fanaika, who started at right tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs in two preseason games, has been placed on injured reserve. This means his season is over. The Chiefs re-signed LB Dezman Moses in his spot.

#Chiefs transactions 9/9 Placed on Reserve/Injured: Paul Fanaika, G Signed: Dezman Moses, LB

— Kansas City Chiefs (@chiefs) September 9, 2015

This is kind of weird. I didn't even realize Fanaika was hurt. He was signed to a three-year free agent this offseason but didn't really project as a starter. He played right tackle in the preseason when Jeff Allen and Eric Fisher were out. Ultimately, this won't affect the Chiefs very much unless multiple injuries hit them, which is possible.

Moses had a solid preseason, especially that first game where he really flashed. He's a good player who merits a spot on the roster.

#Chiefs place OT/OG Paul Fanaika on injured reserve. That is the move that allowed Dezman Moses to return.

I don't think an IR designation frees up any cap space. This keeps them from having to accelerate his remaining signing bonus into this year, sure, but it also sucks up some base salary that could have been rolled over into next year.

I don't see a cap advantage here.

So where does that leave us on the offensive line?

Stephenson
Grubbs
Morse
LDT
Fisher

Reid
Allen
Fulton

Am I missing anyone or is there just 8 players?

Nope. That's it. And until Allen is back, it's basically Reid as our backup tackle and Fulton as our backup guard/center. Pretty thin.

Dorsey basically gets to save face by doing this.

He doesn't have to actually put Fanaika in a game should the need arise, and he gets to keep him around at least one year so he can put up the illusion that he didn't make that signing while tripping balls.

Either way, I don't really care. The Chiefs just improved by a huge amount from irrigating this poop chunk from the team's anus.

I don't know where the Chiefs are in cap space, but this saves them whatever cap space they have to make moves as they become necessary through the season.

If they have plenty of room, then the only logical explanation is that, in this one specific case, they refuse to admit a mistake.

One of those guys would have been an inactivated player most likely on gameday anyway.

We'll be fine until Allen gets back. If a catastophic injury occurs in a game, we'll be able to survive the end of it until we can call in reinforcements. And this way all of those possible reinforcements are guaranteed to not be Fanaika.

I'm down.

Reid and Allen can play both G and T. Fulton can play C or G.

Allen healthy gives us four guys that can play tackle, two that can play C, and five that can play G (Grubbs, morse, Fulton, allen, LDT).

Would rather roll with 8 and have depth elsewhere.

From my friend in Baltimore, who I think is a very educated football fan (FWIW):

What's the story with jah Reid? KC just picked him up

When he's good he's very good. Struggles with staying healthy and consistency. But he can be a very good player at times. Just has never been able to string together good health and good play long enough.

Interesting
the good news is he is going to be a backup

Yeah. He's a very good backup.
When he came in for us I never felt like "oh well fuck. Everyone just rush his way"

Head Trainer Rick Burkholder’s note on OL Paul Fanaika: "With Paul, Sunday morning, he came in, he gets a workout in, he's lifting in weight room, he gets tightness in his back. We put him out on the field, he struggles at practice. We treat him, try to get his back calmed down. He came in the next day worse. Dr. [Joseph] Barnthouse saw him Monday morning, referred him for an MRI, which showed he had a herniated disk in his back. [We] referred him to KU's neurosurgery on Tuesday. Dr. Paul Arnold saw him. He recommended he had surgery. We're in the spot right now where we're trying to decide. Some of these can go without surgery and some can't, but with the timing of it, they put him on injured reserve because he was going to miss time. As you ask about the injury, the debate is do you try to rehab him and take almost the same time as you would if you operated on him and rehabbed him. That's why we don't have a definitive answer. We're referring him to some other people for second and third
