ndy Reid admits he's tried to trade for Alex Smith 'multiple' times before this year. (USATSI)
When Andy Reid took over the Chiefs this past offseason, there was a large, noticable, glaring hole at quarterback. Reid didn't mess around when it came to filling that hole, handing the 49ers a pair of second-round picks for Alex Smith in a stunning offseason trade.

Turns out this past summer wasn't the first time Reid made an an attempt to land Smith from the 49ers (although it was, obviously, the first successful attempt). He acknowledged to the New York Times, in a piece that ran Sunday, that he tried "multiple" times to trade for Smith while he was with the Eagles.

Reid confirmed as much to Peter King of theMMQB.com as well.

"I just always watched him and thought, ‘Man, I'd like to coach that kid,'" Reid said.

Does this sound familiar? Because it should. Shortly after trading for Smith (between the combine, where Reid was asked about Nick Foles roughly 5 billion times, and the owners' meetings) Reid sat down with the media for breakfast in Phoenix and pointed out that he always had eyes for Smith.

"I'd always kind of had my eye on Alex, as [GM John] Dorsey did, and we were able to get that thing done," Reid said.

At the time, no one bothered to ask if Reid had tried to trade for Smith before, likely because from 2005 through 2012 he was pretty set at quarterback with the Eagles. Reid either had Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb, Nick Foles or Michael Vick under center.

Debate "set" all you want with that list, but they were Reid's hand-picked guys. It's not like he was stuck with them. Now he gets a chance to make a run with a guy he never could hand pick -- Smith was the No. 1 overall pick in 2005 and is getting a shot at the first place other than San Francisco since he was drafted.

In some alternate universe Alex smith was the Eagles problem.

He has access to world class diet drugs, trainers and nutritionists and he's still morbidly obese. How smart can he be?
