In the midst of a five-game losing streak, head coach Andy Reid still believes

The first six weeks of football have come and gone in the 2015 NFL season and the Kansas City Chiefs have one victory thus far. That came in Week 1 against the Houston Texans, and since then, the team has lost five straight games in a row.

To add to that predicament, there’s no more Jamaal Charles—his season has been lost to an ACL injury.

The Denver Broncos, despite Peyton Manning’s league-worst 72.5 passer rating, are undefeated and in first place in the AFC West. In-game spots that could have seemingly swung in Kansas City’s direction have not.

In this moment, as preparation begins for the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium, it would be easy for the Chiefs to point to excuses.

But you’d be hard pressed to find someone in the building that is making them.

Head coach Andy Reid has stood strong through the early-season disappointment, still maintaining his preseason conviction that he has a good football team in this year’s version, one that is capable of playing better starting immediately.

“We’re sitting here and we’re 1-5. That’s real,” he acknowledged in his weekly press conference Monday. “As a coach, you’re a problem solver and I have to solve the problems and get that done quick here. I still believe in my locker room, I believe in our coaches. We need to get over this hump here and figure out a way to play better football consistently. That’s the challenge and that’s the way I approach it.”

Reid’s message and call for better football has carried over to the team, and as his 10-year veteran in wide receiver Jason Avant explained, the older players have made a point of it to drive his message home.

“What the older guys understand is you mimic what the coach says,” Avant said. “You’re always trying to give support for the coach, but also you know if you work in the same direction, it will work out.”

Avant continued, explaining the Chiefs have reached a point of needing to play in the mindset of “playoff football.”

“You can’t look at what your record is,” he said. “That’s the great thing about playing in the National Football League—everyone has talent and the teams that are winning are not because of talent. The teams that are winning are because they play together as a team and we’re trying to find a stride where we’re playing together as a team.”

Avant has typically played in a limited role for the Chiefs this season but could see more time this weekend as fellow wideout Jeremy Maclin undergoes league concussion protocol.

Punter Dustin Colquitt, who is in the midst of his 11th season in Kansas City, is known on the team as a player who keeps things jovial, and in times like this, he says he always will try to keep teammates loose in the locker room.

Once it’s game time, that example extends to the field.

“In between the lines, it’s obviously different,” he said. “I try to do it just with my play, try to put our defense in a great situation, give them a big field to work with. Our thing is, we just have to keep working and things are going to start going our way.”

Guided by veteran words in the locker room and by the manner in which they conduct themselves on the football field, responding will be critical as the Chiefs find themselves in an unfavorable position while needing to rely on some inexperienced players in important roles.

Charcandrick West, at the age of 24 and having spent 2014 on the practice squad, started at running back for the Chiefs against the Vikings last Sunday and likely will again this Sunday against the Steelers.

Of his performance on Sunday, Reid said that West did “some nice things,” specifically commending his blitz pickups, good rushing attempts and his aggressiveness.

Whether it’s by the on-the-field professionalism of Colquitt or the off-the-field guidance from a veteran like Avant, West has grasped an underlying theme that seems to have bolstered his confidence in his new position.

“We’re family,” he said when asked about the impact of some of the veterans. “You turn to family when facing adversity. We’re just going to have to stick together.”

The Chiefs family hasn’t given up on 2015; neither has Reid, who realizes the time for action is now.

“I still believe it, we’ve got to do it though. It’s one thing to say it, it’s another thing to do it. And so, until we do that, it’s all words and that doesn’t mean anything.”

This WAS the year to take down Denver. They're nowhere near as good as they have been. Had you done your job, in this year 3, that might have been accomplished. Instead, you're going backwards due in large part to your own stubbornness, and that is TOTAL FAIL.

Same old crap every year. It's real simple and I hope they can hear all of us at One Arrowhead Drive. WE DON"T HAVE A QB THAT'S ANY GOOD! THE REST DOES NOT MATTER!

That is the way the NFL is these days. Your QB is everything and even if Andy is the coach. Even if he blew all our time outs for no reason. Even if he ignored JC more than he has, he would win if we had a stud at QB.

Until they get a coach and GM that get that position solid, we will lose. It's that simple. Teams that make the playoffs and have a shot at the SB every year have studs at QB. The days of Brad Johnson and Tent Dilfer falling ass backwards into a title are over. You must have a winner that can rally the team in the 4th when needed and win. A leader the other 52 can believe in. We have none of that and have not had one is a very very very long time.

3 playoff wins in the last 45 years? 3 PLAYOFF WINS IN THE LAST 45 YEARS! It's the one position you must have on the team that is a total stud and the Chiefs treat it like it's nothing. Just throw any old vet out there and we'll be fine is their attitude.

Pathedic. Year after year of QB shit and we are worse than other teams. They at least try with younger QB's in the draft. We do not.

His college team never made it that far and he only looked good in protected pocket. He also didn't offer much under the slightest amount of pressure. That was his criticism going into the draft and why he was a 5th rounder. Also, being just 6 feet tall puts the odds against him.

I kind of agree, Tat. However, at this stage, I'd like to see ANYONE in there at QB besides Smith. I'm not ready to write off Daniel, the problem though is that I believe this is his contract year, so if he plays well, and we decide to keep him, it's gonna be expensive. Just don't see us sinking anymore $$$ into the QB position until 2017 given Smith's contract. Sad situation.

I really want to see competition and draft a first round quarterback. Let them duke it out and even though the first rounder would have the luxury of having that golden opportunity it wouldn't be given to him if they keep it so that the quarterback has to earn the starting job. That's what the Chiefs don't do so I'm thinking what is opposite of what they do.

If he see's 2016 this team is fail...

His cap hit is pretty big if we cut him in 2016 iirc.

I believe a new regime would keep him around 1 more year even if they draft somebody.

according to over-the-cap

2016 pre june 1st cut: $24,900,000 dead money and $7,100,000 cap hit
2016 after june 1st cut: $17,700,000 dead money and $100,000 cap SAVINGS

2017 pre june 1st cut: $7,100,000 dead money and $9,700,000 cap savings
2017 after june 1st cut: $3,600,000 dead money and $13,300,000 cap savings

cap wise keeping him around a year with a QB draft pick makes way more sense

You're right but it's gonna be too big of a hit to let him go after this season. Will probably keep him for one more year. I won't have a problem with it IF they get a franchise QB.

Well, that's not true, I still will...

As long as Alex Smith is just a placeholder then he's fine for another year. He's a team guy and won't cause problems.

If we still don't have a plan than that's a problem whether AS is here or not.

They better have a fucking plan that includes drafting a QB next year and playing Murray after the bye week to find out if the guy is just wasting a roster spot, can fill in for Daniel or has the potential of starting in the league.

Smith is a solid Hasselbeck type mentor/clipboard holder at this point.

They need to get the long term answer in here this next draft.

I dont think our defense was this much of an abomination.

The slow start to that year was due to some top tier pant shitting on the sideline by Randy.

Once that issue was resolved, we went on a tear. He actually had a defense that could stop a busload of old women.

There's just not anything that Andy can do here. Defense is not his thing. He has to be perfect on offense now. He has to understand the situation that if we plow into the centers ass for a 2 yard loss on 3rd n 2 when we have the best qb on the planet and a bevy of better options, and we fail, we are gonna be down another 7 points.

He needs to cast aside his faith in the defense, but he wont.

He has to be perfect, and he's not. Nobody is.

Steve needs to un **** the defensive scheme or hit the bricks.

We are surrendering 30 points per game. You aren't winning anything with that trash on the field.

If it takes losing the turnover battle by 4-0 to lose to good teams, then the Chiefs will beat the bad teams without even significantly improving.

Just get hot at the right time and stay healthy. We’ll have a chance come playoff time.

No that year was worse. At this point only the very top teams can run with us - if that’s because of our offense being massively stronger than it was under AS so be it.

This weekend for example I think most of us expect to steamroll WFT and ultimately end up in the playoffs this year. We may well be a one and done but thats a different story.

Not sure anyone believed we were capable of a winning record let alone the division at 1-5.

In 2015 the Chiefs dropped to 1-4 after five weeks, with a terrible home loss at Arrowhead, and losing RB #25 to injury.

In 2021 the Chiefs dropped to 2-3 after five weeks, with a terrible home loss at Arrowhead, and losing RB #25 to injury.

The difference in 2021 is Patrick Mahomes vs. Alex Smiff in 2015.

BELIEVE? ROFL BELIEVE THIS - This team is NOT going to turn it around in time to change ANYTHING. This team is a hull of it's past self. We had an INCREDIBLE last 3 seasons and the NFL has figured it out - COVER 2! Gut the D in the off season and rebuild the D in 2 seasons.

Your playoff teams are these...

AFC
Bills, Ravens, Chargers, Titans - NEITHER of which the Chiefs could beat.

NFC
Bucs, Rams, Cards, Packers - NEITHER of which the Chiefs could beat.

It sucks but it is what it is - WE SUCK! Thanks shitty D and thanks numerus TO's in the first 5 games. NOT HAPPENING!

And officially, I WILL STOP. I am frustrated like all of you are but it just sucks/hurts that this superior NFL team has fallen to a cold cellar status. It breaks my heart and kills me mostly for all the locals who spend so much on tickets, parking, tailgating, concessions for a 0 return on investment. I promise to not say anything else about the Chiefs this season in a negative fashion.

CP I formally apologize for my negativity on this forum. Shutting up now.

That's not entirely true. If they bench Sorensen, move Jones back inside, and Gordon balls out?

We could get it together. Will they do those things? I don't know.

We went through a rough stretch in 2019. I've been preaching that you want to peak in Dec-Jan-Feb, not Sept-Oct-Nov

I wouldn't go so far as to say the Chiefs suck; they do have some issues on defense that would be solved by a solid pass rush and better run stoppage. Right now, there's plays where the opposing team gets a pass and there's absolutely no one even in the picture for ten yards.

The turnovers have been bad, the inability to make a stop on defense to give some momentum to the offense is an issue.

They don't suck, they just appear distracted and disinterested.
