Actually, we do. Retaking the driving test should be mandatory every 5-10 years. Old people are a huge voting block, and they would freak out about such a law, though.

Mine's 2050.

I also had a 92 year old patient who renewed her license earlier in the year. She was dealing with some mild dementia at the time but passed and you want to know how long her license was renewed for? 4 fucking years. In 2 years she probably won't even know the names of her family with her dementia progression. If her family isn't on top of it, she will kill herself or someone on the road.

Not quite sure. The elderly driving is a tough one and as mentioned earlier, better screening. When you take away the keys, you take away much of their independence. Aging is frustrating enough, to lose one's "freedom". Usually, it comes down to the family to judge with drawing the driving privilege. Ours did.

My grandparents aged 87. Lived in North Town (KC) for all of their lives. They knew it like the back of their hand. Grampy had Macular Degeneration in its' late stages and was hard of hearing. Gramy had many TIAs and was partially paralyzed and couldn't speak very well but had eagle eyes and great hearing.

They drove around North Town to church (5 blocks), groceries (4 blocks) etc. Not on the highway. He would drive and she would navigate (squalk when the light was red, when to turn etc). DEFINITELY an accident waiting to happen. They knew it but didn't want to anymore dependent on the kids. It was a tough decision and an easy one. We took the keys away and he pouted a little while but was noble enough to know it was the right choice.

I think this will happen down the road...it is simple demographics. 1/3 of the population is a boomer. When you get that large a segment aged 80-100, they will cause the majority of accidents (even more so then 18 yr old).

I don't have stats (I am sure there is some), but it just makes mathematical sense.

Is there any truth to the idea that elderly people have a lot more MINOR accidents? I don't envision granny plowing down the highway at 70 and running off the road so much as I envision her backing up into a light pole.

UPDATE: 5:45 p.m. A 2 year old has died at The Children's Hospital as a result of the injuries sustained during this morning's tragedy in Stillwater. The child was one of eight patients brought to OU Medical Center— four children and three adults remain hospitalized.

Though the drunk girl deserves everything she has coming to her, you have to think just knowing what she did will punish her for the rest of her life. She should be forced to go around and speak at colleges or something.

I'm sure there could be a thread of truth to that. It's hard to calculate because the police aren't typically involved. Generally those very minor accidents aren't reported because the vehicles involved exchange info and part ways or the "offender" doesn't even know they hit something.

I can think of a handful of "elderly" accidents I have been involved with and it was because the victim called police. Of those I think all but one were parking lot (backing) accidents.

It's probably been almost 10 years ago now but I had to deal with a kid that killed a family of 4 on I70 drunk driving the wrong way. Got 2 years incarceration and some additional years of probation.

I hadn't factored in the Distracted Driving. If you think about the number of Distracted vs Drunk vs Elderly, Distracted (text/phone et.al.) is prolly 50%...dunno. I just look at the number of people in the left hand lane going slow and as I pass, sure enough they are on the phone (or a woman:))

Points above about the elder not doing 70 down the road...yea, not happening much. As to the light pole, on the mark. I will say that mistaking the gas pedal vs the brake pedal, then panicking is the area I was thinking mostly of. How many times does this happen, not huge like texting.

Frightening:

It wouldn't surprise me one bit to find out that she was fucking around with her phone when this happened. And if so, it's probably more of a factor than her being drunk. Hell I'd rather be on the road with drunks than texters, at least the drunks are watching the road.

This happened one year in Maryville at the homecoming parade. A drunk in a PT cruiser drove right into the parade. Cops were chasing down the street on foot and IIRC (it was out of my view by that moment) they yanked the door open and arrested the person. It was a miracle no one got run over that time.
