So how many veteran season ticket holders will switch to the Royals now? I bet Clark looses his ass next season.

How will he let his ass loose exactly? Does it get away from him? Will he set it free?

Free is not in his vocabulary. Unless of course you happen to be in London and he's giving you free beer.

Free beer, must have missed that.

BY TEREZ A. PAYLOR

LONDON, ENGLAND
From the moment the National Football League announced last November that the Chiefs would be hosting the Detroit Lions this season in London, Chiefs president Mark Donovan and his staff have been working to figure out the best way to engage fans in the experience.

In the end, it came down to two things: what they could do for season-ticket holders and fans who were not able to go to London for the game, and what they could do for those who could.

The latter solution proved to be simple enough.

“We talked about so many different things we could do over there,” Donovan said. “And it finally came back to, ‘You know what? Let’s just find a way to buy these guys a beer.’ So anybody who is over there because the Chiefs are playing, we want to buy you a beer.”

The question then became how they could do that. The answer? A three-hour event on Friday at a bar called The Admiralty in London’s Trafalgar Square ― “(It) comes highly recommended,” Donovan said ― where fans who register in advance can have two beers on the Chiefs.

“We just said let’s try and (find) a very iconic tourist area that makes sense,” Donovan said. “So people are registering, they’ll be on a list, and then they’ll get a wristband with tickets, and you get two beers, and then you pay for them after that. And then we’ll have a VIP area, which will be all you can drink, all you can eat, and that’s really how we’re doing it.”

Dispatch from London - Lions in flux
The Star's Terez Paylor reports from Detroit's practice in London, where the Lions, 1-6, are a team in flux heading into their game against the Chiefs on Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

Donovan said the Chiefs will also be hosting a tailgate at Wembley Stadium the day of the game, which, along with the pub event, will likely be attended by team chairman Clark Hunt.

“He’ll be at the pub party, he’ll be at the tailgate, he’ll be at the game,” Donovan said.

But what about the fans back at home? Before settling on a watch party at Johnny’s Tavern in the Power and Light District, Donovan said, the Chiefs contemplated many options.

“So (the game’s at) 8:30 in the morning; that impacts what you’re going to do and what you can do,” Donovan said. “And we talked about everything. You can imagine the meetings. It was sort of fun to say ‘OK, are we gonna do kegs and eggs, are we gonna do a concert, are we going to open the stadium and broadcast it and have a watch party there?’ ”

The more they talked about it, the more they realized they needed something that was in a central location that gives people the opportunity to do whatever they want to do and can expand, if necessary.

“(Because) I can’t tell you if there are going to be 1,000 people or 10,000 people down at Johnny’s on Sunday,” Donovan said. “And remember, we’re scheduling this in October, November, December of last year, so you’ve got to factor in (that) you have no idea what our schedule is going to be or any of that stuff. So that all played into it, and that’s why Johnny’s makes so much sense.

“We’ll have the cheerleaders down there, we’ll have (K.C.) Wolf, a couple of ambassadors will be down there. So it will be a party, and it will be a Chiefs party, and for anybody who is here and wants to get together with other fans, there will be a place to go. It’s the best place for it.”

Donovan said that opening up Arrowhead Stadium to fans didn’t make sense, logistically.

“One, you just have no idea how many people are going to come out Sunday morning at 8:30 to watch a game in the stadium on a big TV,” Donovan said. “And then, secondly, you don’t know about weather, right? So you do all this planning, (and) all of a sudden it’s 30 (degrees) and rainy, it’s probably going to impact you.

“Whereas somewhere like Johnny’s, you can be indoors, you can shut doors, you can do a lot of other things. So it’s a lot of flexible. And everybody has proven that the P&L works for this kind of thing. So that was the idea.”

Donovan also noted that the Chiefs will have an increased social media presence on Twitter in an effort to give people the experience of what it’s like to be in London over the weekend.

“We’re going to do some stuff we typically don’t do with it as the guys are getting ready to go and showing things we don’t normally show, just to try to get (fans) some insight,” Donovan said.

This is a process that has been a year in the making, Donovan said, and he’s optimistic that things will turn out well.

“I don’t think people realize just how it takes over an organization, because it’s a big project,” Donovan said. “We feel really good about the plan, we feel really good about really taking advantage of this.

“It is a challenge. It’s a lot of work. It’s excess on us, it’s excess on our football team, we understand that. But we’re taking full advantage of it.”

I'm wondering who the bear is that is going to loosen it.

He's been on that Toronto board for so long he's starting to spell like them.
