Very underrated game tonight against a senior laden Tulsa team. I know Marshall wont let us take them lightly. BTW I love this freshmen class, Landry Shamet is going to end up being the new "Ron Baker" and Markis McDuffie is gonna be a stud. The group that said WSU will be mediocre when Baker and Van Vleet leave are going to be very disappointed.

As a Golden Hurricane fan we played our "A" game and you all didn't hit threes at the percentage I expected. That said we should be a top 25 team this year. I've really enjoyed this rivalry over the years and hope we continue to play with the intensity we did tonight for the rest of the year. If we do the loss shouldn't hurt you guys too much, after all you've been one of the elite teams in cbb over the last few years.

Tulsa came out and played a great game. We struggled with their zone and some of the new guys made some bad fouls. Fred wasn't Fred in the second half and the bench wasn't a lot of help.

We didn't make our threes and didn't complete on free throws. Tulsa was lights out. They're going to have a good season. We'll be ok. Good learning opportunity.

11-17-2015, 10:43 PM
Part of Tulsa's game plan was to run and drive more than normal when Fred was in the game due to his injuries and inability to be conditioned like normal because of said injuries. The Shockers responded by packing it in a little more than normal and Tulsa hit 3's given to them by the strategy. That coupled with a slightly off night behind the arc cost the Shockers the game. I think Tulsa won more than Wichita lost, but if they meet again the strategies will be different from both sides.

Pretty spot on, but I don't want you to sell yourselves short. Tulsa won that game, WSU didn't just hand it to them, and I think they have a chance at a very great year.

From the Shocker perspective, I'm honestly not too upset. We've been very spoiled the past few years and generally won those games. The freshmen and sophomores need to learn that Fred and Baker can't carry them, they have to pull their own weight.

Wichita Eagle on Anton Grady. Kind of up in the air about his return:

Anton Grady is using crutches and will return to Wichita on Sunday night with the rest of the Wichita State basketball team, his father said.
“Anton is on his way home,” Eric Cloud said. “He is progressing pretty good. He’s walking on crutches right now. He should be back to 100 percent, I’ll say, with two weeks of good rest. In two weeks, he should be back to full strength.”

Cloud said Grady wants to play basketball again. That decision can’t be discussed fully until he recovers and doctors clear him for physical activity. He began physical rehabilitation in Orlando and will continue in Wichita. WSU had planned for basketball staff member Devon Smith to stay with Grady in Orlando.
“He is planning to finish the season with Wichita, once he gets back to healthy,” Cloud said. “I told him to make sure he’s ready to go before you get back out there. He talked to the doctor and the doctor told him it was all right for him to finish playing basketball.”
Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall said Grady’s return to basketball is a decision for doctors and Grady.

Grady collapsed on the court with three minutes remaining in Friday’s loss to Alabama. Grady, while turning to run, collided with Alabama player Dazon Ingram. Grady took a few, stumbling steps before falling to the court. In a news release, WSU describes Grady hitting Ingram with his chin, causing his head to rotate.
Later Friday, WSU announced that a CT scan, for broken bones, and an MRI scan for soft-tissue damage in the spinal cord, were negative.

You always have to try to look at the silver lining in these things. It was a terrible week for the program with Fred out and nobody ready to step in for him yet, then Shamet suddenly has to have surgery then Grady getting hurt and the three ugly losses. BUT the new young guys are getting loads of playing time and getting big boy experience playing some very good teams. Not at all, but he can shoot. That's desperately what we need right now

Everybody said he could shoot, but he was KU's worst 3 point shooter by percentage during his freshman season at 31%. Wait, wait. I spoke to soon. I see that Joel Embiid shot a three and missed, so he wasn't the worst.

He also had the worst FG percentage on the team at 34%. Wait wait, I spoke too soon, one of KU's walk ons took 4 shots and only made one so he was technically worse than Drunkamp at 25%.

Chiefspants
11-30-2015, 04:39 PM
Not at all, but he can shoot. That's desperately what we need right now

His problem at KU was that he had to step into his shot to be effective. In the Big 12, someone with his size and speed needs to be a catch and shoot player to have a role on the team (his defense was also suspect).

Whether or not he can learn how to shoot without stepping into his shot will likely be the measuring stick for his effectiveness at WSU.

Our poor thread has died! Here is some scary news about Cleanthony Early. Prayers for a quick recovery.

http://www.wibw.com/home/headlines/Former-Wichita-State-basketball-standout-shot-363818011.html
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Former Wichita State standout and New York Knicks reserve forward Cleanthony Early was shot during an apparent holdup after leaving a Queens strip club early Wednesday morning.

New York Knicks reserve forward Cleanthony Early was shot during an apparent holdup after leaving a Queens strip club early Wednesday morning.

The shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. after the 24-year-old Bronx native left the CityScapes Gentlemen’s Club on 58th Street and hailed an Uber cab, 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck reported.

Moments later, as many as three vehicles boxed in the cab on Maurice Avenue. A group of armed and masked men got out and confronted Early, robbing him of his gold chains and gold caps on his teeth, Schuck reported.

Early was then shot in the leg, Schuck reported. He got back into the Uber car with the driver, and they went around the corner to 64th Street, where they started knocking on doors for help.

Witness Armand Czapkowski told CBS2’s Scott Rapoport he saw Early go to his neighbor’s door across the street and asked for help.

“The tall gentleman was shot in the leg and my neighbor was just trying to help him, he let him into the house,” he said. “It was madness in the middle of the night.”

Early was taken to Elmhurst Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman told The Wall Street Journal Early was released Wednesday morning.

No arrests have been made.

Detectives wouldn’t say if Early was specifically targeted by the suspects, Rapoport reported.

“He was the victim of a robbery. That’s all we know at this time,” said the detective.

The Knicks released a statement saying: “We are aware of what occurred with Cleanthony Early this morning and are relieved that he is not in a life-threatening situation. We will not comment any further until we receive more information.”

Early, who starred in college at Wichita State, was selected in the second round of the 2014 draft. He has struggled to make an impact in the NBA, as he’s been shuttled back and forth between the Knicks and their Developmental League team in Westchester.

The Knicks had just come off a win Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.

The attack on Early comes about 10 days after Knicks forward Derrick Williams was robbed of $617,000 in jewelry from his home. He had taken home two women from a Manhattan club. Police are still looking for suspects.

Williams has declined to comment on the theft, but the case raised questions about whether NBA players should have a curfew like other professional sports. In April, Indiana Pacers forward Chris Copeland, his girlfriend and another woman were stabbed following a late-night argument on the street near a Manhattan nightclub.

Knicks coach Derek Fisher was asked about the policy at a news conference after Williams was robbed.

“I don’t really have to get into our policies of what you can and can’t do,” he told reporters last week. “We don’t have a curfew like in the NFL or other sports do on certain nights. It’s an unfortunate incident.”

I actually think the key the latest surge is the play of the bench. You got Connor, McDuffie, and the bigs. Then also you will get to add Shamet early to mid Feb. Makes this team really deep.
I would love to join the AAC as long as Uconn, Cinci and Memphis all stay. If they dont its gonna be around the same level as the MVC.

Freds command of the floor cannot be under estimated. But I also think that the team is gelling with the new members and getting into the groove that was expected to happen before all the injuries took its toll.

The MVC has teams that are improving and providing better competition but still lacking.

I hope we can move to better conference that provides us the opportunity to go to the next level. If thats the AAC and the quality teams remain in the AAC then go for it. I think we've outgrown the MVC and it hurts us to remain there.

Yeah it will be tough for them to move up much with the strength of the other teams in the Valley just not up there. The early losses were a mixed blessing. It hurt their rankings for now, but the bench players became much more involved and matured with all of the playing time they were able to get because of the starters injuries. Now they are a very deep team with lots of players you can trust in big games. Marshall just seems like the kind of coach that will get a lemon handed to him and make it into lemonade

Interesting observation from Yahoo Sports about Shox seeding....

Seeding Wichita State may be tricky for the committee next month

The toughest team for the selection committee to figure out how to seed in six weeks may very well turn out to be Wichita State.

The Shockers are somehow on pace to have an AP Top 25 ranking, a top 15 KenPom rating and the resume of a mid-major bubble team all at the same time.

Hampered by a wave of injuries during November and December, Wichita State did not live up to preseason top 15 expectations in non-conference play. The Shockers dropped games against Alabama, USC and Iowa at the Advocare Invitational in Orlando, stumbled again on the road at middling Tulsa and Seton Hall and only managed to notch one top 50 win.

Many questioned whether Wichita State would be dominant enough in league play to contend for an at-large NCAA tournament bid, but the Shockers have thrived so far despite scant margin for error.

Wichita State improved to 10-0 in the Valley on Sunday after traveling to second-place Evansville and thumping the Purple Aces 78-65. Not only have the Shockers won their league games by an average of 20.3 points apiece, they're now done with maybe their three toughest road games in league play.

Why has Wichita State been dominant in league play despite a disastrous start to the season?

Some of it is that the rest of the Valley is unusually pedestrian this year. Some of it is the continued improvement of freshman forward Markis McDuffie. But a lot of it is also that the Shockers have nearly their full complement of weapons again after playing without star point guard Fred VanVleet for most of five games, without starting forward Anton Grady for four games and without sharpshooting Kansas transfer Conner Frankamp until mid-December.

Back at nearly full strength, Wichita State is 16-5 overall and has a realistic chance of not taking a loss the rest of the regular season. KenPom favors the Shockers in each of their remaining games but projects them to slip up in one of them and enter the Missouri Valley tournament with a 24-6 overall record and a 17-1 record in league play.

Say that projection turns out to be spot-on and then the Shockers win three more games to capture the Missouri Valley tournament and improve to 27-6 entering Selection Sunday. Where do you seed them?

On one hand, its lone top 50 win would still be its Dec. 12 home victory over Pac-12 contender Utah. On the other hand, the Shockers would be 26-3 with VanVleet in the lineup and 23-2 with VanVleet and Frankamp both available.

Mock brackets currently have Wichita State anywhere from a No. 6 seed to a No. 12, which reflects the challenge of figuring out what to do with the Shockers. Do you reward them for running roughshod over the Valley? Do you penalize them for a lack of marquee wins? Or do you try to find some happy medium?

Ultimately, if Wichita State keeps winning, I hope the selection committee bucks history and take VanVleet's injury into account because otherwise the Shockers have a chance to be the team no high seed wants in its section of the bracket. Otherwise, can you imagine the reaction from the No. 1 seed whose second-round draw is a 27-win Wichita State team with a top 15 KenPom rating and loads of postseason experience?

It's all conjecture at this point, yet such a scenario is looking increasingly possible the way Wichita State is playing. Six weeks before Selection Sunday, the Shockers are trending toward becoming one of the committee's trickiest decisions.

I would actually hope the selection committee doesn't try to pull off that scenario again. It's not that I don't want WSU to face KU, I'd just prefer to let that work itself out possibly down the line like if they both make it to the Final Four. If there's anyone I'd like a rematch with it's Kentucky or Louisville.

How did this get by without notice?

With a loss for the Arizona Wildcats Thursday night, the Wichita State Shockers now own the nation's longest active home court win streak with 42 straight victories at Charles Koch Arena.

The Shockers last lost at home back in February of 2013 to Evansville. Since then, "The Roundhouse" has seen a record-setting string of wins. The Kansas Jayhawks rank 2nd among home court win streaks with 34 consecutive victories.

Tonight that streak gets tested with SIU in town. Plus Gregg Marshall can be the WSU all time winningest coach with a victory

Baker and VanVleet need to start coming up big like they've done before the past few years. This the opportunity to make the season a success after the stumbling at St. Louis.

I think he is, but this season struggles have been mental for him. When he doesn't have time to think about the shot his percentage is really high. I do think he defers to Fred and Ron too much. Shamet
Frankamp
Brown
Mcduffie
Shaq

Would not be surprised if Daishon Smith, Darrlyn Willis, or Peyton Allen find them self in the line up. Eric Hamilton is my wildcard, guy is talented enough to get minutes but just looked lost early trying to run the sets in Orlando.

Not at all what I was saying. It was all toughness and intensity. I know the symptoms well, I'm a KU fan.

Fair enough. I just hope we have good games from here on out. Nothing pisses me off more than KU coming out like they don't give a fuck

Another off night from the shocker opponent. Seems like this happens often

Power Conference foes tend to piss themselves when they play the Shox. It's not luck, it's because the Shox are a cutt-throat, ruthless team that everyone should be afraid to play in March.

You should kill that offense. If the shox get anything going on offense whatsoever you should take this by 15.

I think it was legs. Particularly with the big guys. 3 un 5 days is a lot to ask.

Sorry to see Baker and VanVleet go out on a very winnable game. Especially to that puke Angel Rodriguez.

I know. Despite wanting him to be a turd, he's a pretty solid college player. The good thing about it is that he isn't in the Big 12 anymore.

It would be impossible to quantify, but I can't think of a group of guys that had a better shooting % on flat out bad shots as Clemente, Rodruiguez, and Pullen.

I agree he did go too far for an exhibition game. I havent been following them during this Canadian tour but I am hearing stories of missed flights, travel delays, etc., not that makes it ok to lose your composure but I think the way the game was called was the final straw.

I don't disagree with your point that it was a meaningless exhibition game and Marshall went overboard with his reaction. Like I said, I wished I would have seen that passion (within reason) in a few critical games last season.

My picture posts were a response to what I perceived as your veiled jab about him getting ready for a frustrated season now that Ron Baker and Fred Van Vleet are gone. I know the "Battle of Omaha" still stings with a few of the Jayhawk fans.

If thats not what you were getting at then my bad.

You are right that I was getting at this season being frustrating as he brings in a younger/new group of players after losing VF and Baker. It wasn't meant to be a jab though.

I'm not bitter about Omaha at all. WSU was better prepared, played loose and kicked our ass. No whining from me.

The problem was the officials was terrible at that game. Could Marshall have handled it better? Probably so, but at some point, you have to cross the line to protect your team if they're getting one sided and the officiating was not up to snuff.

Exhibition game or not, if a player(s) health is on the line and the officiating isn't enforcing it, I would damn do something about it if another team is going to cheap shotting my guys.

The players responded by going on a 21-11 run to close the game. The tactic, while poor in professionally mannered, worked to win the game because it gave the players that the coach had your back if things were not going your way because of shoddy officiating.

Hell, Frank Martin was notorious for doing it as well.

Eh, no. Dude lost his fucking mind. He shoved players and Coaches to get to the refs. You can try and justify this 9 ways to Sunday, but you just don't handle your business like that. It was an embarrassing display any way you cut it. And, "worked to win the game"? LOL. Really? Yay, we won a meaningless exhibition game in front of a crowd of 12. Yippeeee!:D No, what this proved is what I already knew about the guy after being around him a bunch times here in Wichita - he's a fucking nut case. He's a FANTASTIC Coach. There is no doubt about that. But, he's a weird fucking dude for sure.
