The Chiefs have been playing very well the past few weeks, which culminated in a really good game yesterday against the Bills when the team was super banged up. The offensive line in particular had new players at three different positions. On the last play of the game, both Dezmon Moses and Frank Zombo were playing at linebacker.

Looking at our playoff odds on the Playoff Simulator, our odds of making the playoffs actually get better (http://www.chiefsplanet.com/bb/showthread.php?t=296318) if we lose at Oakland.

Now, I am NOT advocating we throw the game against Oakland. The players we put in should play for the win.

But it's fucking Oakland, a miserable place to play. We're all kinds of banged up, with major and minor injuries, concussions, and guys on the team that could use a week off. And statistically, it doesn't matter if we lose to the Raiders because we've got the easiest remaining schedule in the league.

All we need is for Pitt to lose one more game this season, and win the last four games of the year. Boom. 5th seed, going to Indy.

Maybe we should try benching all of our critical players, and give our injured players the week off to heal?

The math might say it's better to lose a particular game, but conventional wisdom overrules that in that you have to win every game to make the playoffs. Winning out takes chance largely out of the equation, chance which is what is expressed in a stat that say it's better to lose to Oakland than it is to get a win from them.

11-5 almost always guarantees a playoff berth while 10-6 is prone to missing out because of tiebreakers.

You know.. tiebreakers like divisional and conference win percentage, of which the Oakland game counts obviously for both.

One or more losses by the Chiefs practically eliminates them from here on out.

Okay, I do appreciate the attempt to consider an unconventional approach. If in Week 17 a loss would drop us to no less than 6th wild card and a win no higher than 5th, the idea of resting some seems worth considering. Especially if we like the matchup against the three seed more.
