Connor Cook decided to return to Michigan State after his junior season last year, and now the Spartans are on the verge of a playoff berth.

He's also ready for the next level, says Penn State coach James Franklin.

"He's the most polished, NFL-ready quarterback that I've seen in college football this year," Franklin said on Fox's pregame show for the Big Ten championship game.

"He's got he body type they're looking for. not only can he make all the throws, and can manage the offense, they also run him. He has the ability to change the game in a lot of ways.

The last Big Ten quarterback to be drafted in the first round was Penn State's Kerry Collins in 1995. Cook has 8,793 career passing yards entering tonight, with 71 career touchdowns and 10 300-yard games.

"The thing that stands out to me about the guy is his poise and his confidence," Franklin said. "People talk about the game slowing down, that's what it looks like when this guy plays. Talk about a guy who can anticipate his throws, so poised."

Fox analyst Matt Leinart, a former Heisman Trophy winner, called Cook a "first-round talent."

"He's got all the physical attributes you want in a quarterback," Leinart said. "If you can not get to Connor Cook, he's going to pick apart a defense."

No matter how far the chiefs get this season we should all want smith gone asap.

Kerry Collins can't be the last first round QB out of the big 10. There HAS to be someone else.

Can we count Brady Quinn as Big Ten?

Cook will be a mediocre pro imo. He's a guy that's benefitted by playing 3 years in a good program.

I don't see it. I didn't see it in Kirk Cousins, either. And after a similar career at the same school he ended up going in the fourth and now's had 4 roller coaster years in dc. Although I also acknowledge that DC is like Oakland east and everybody flounders there. Anyway, Cook'll go wherever he goes regardless of my opinion, of course, but I wouldn't go first round on him, either.

I'm not sure if you're being facetious, but that really was a disgusting "incident".

"Being in the moment" isn't a good excuse.

That's bullshit.

Smith is going to start next season and you want him to, especially if they bring in a guy who they feel can be the QBOTF. You want him learning the offense and watching film on NFL defenses for at least a year before you throw him into the fire. You don't Geno Smith a real talent. It's not like other positions. There is so much more required from a QB in terms of game understanding and leadership at this level.

And Smith is exactly the type of QB that you want in front of a QBOTF for a season or perhaps two, especially in an offense that is as complicated as Reids.

As well, you want this offensive line to gel for another season, especially if they draft a RTOTF in 2016. It's coming together quite well right now, but another year for Morse and LDT at C and RG along with Fisher and Allen at LT/LG with a new RT would provide continuity and a wall for the QBOTF who could possibly start in 2017.

No, I think that anyone who is being objective and rational understands that it is definitely in the best interests of the team and the development of a QBOTF that Smith starts in 2016. (Unless the QBOTF is on the roster currently in Murray or Bray, but since neither have made the coaching staff feel secure enough to move up and past even Daniel at this point, I sincerely doubt that either is that guy.)

Eli Manning.

Their college stats are eerily similar as are their physical makeup and how they play the game, especially in the air.

Damn near the exact same player at this level.

The thing that worries me about Cook is that he's had overall accuracy issues his entire college career. Never has thrown for 60%. Hell, he's never thrown for 59% in a single complete season. He throws a very nice deep out and then will completely miss an easy crossing pattern. Kind of maddening actually.

I'd rather take a project with incredible upside like Hackenberg in the 2nd than spend a first on a limited player like Connor Cook.

And if I had my choice of either Hackenberg or Cook, but I had to use a first rounder to get the player of choice, I'd still probably choose Hackenberg over Cook.

I would too.

I know that there are people who don't like Hackenberg around here, but his tool set and physical attributes are elite. He's been mired in a system that is wrong for him and hasn't had much to work with and he's still gamed hard every outing.

If gets good coaching at the next level and is given a chance to re-learn the position, I think he's got a good chance to be something special.

I'm going to get shit for this, but he reminds me a lot of Dan Marino at the same level.

I thought he looked ok/decent. Nothing to make me lose my mind over if he was there and didn't take him. Nothing really jumped out at me. Sort of like a Honda Civic. Good and reliable. Granted I've only seen the one game so................

It's ironic that in 1983 the Chiefs went with the safe Connor Cook pick from Penn State instead of Marino, and this time around the roles are reversed.

He snatched the trophy out of Archie's hands and gave him the most half-assed "handshake" he possibly could have.

All in all, just a really douchey move on his part. Show some respect.

He acted like Griffin wasn't even there.
