View Full Version : Chiefs Ten Things about Today's SEVENTH STRAIGHT Win

Ten things about today's game.

Gblowfish is indisposed today. He's asked me to guest write in his stead. I was honored to be asked and said yes. Haven't written anything Chiefs related in a very long time. Hope it stands up.

10. What can you say about Dee Ford today? He is fast, fast, fast. Color guys referenced DT today when talking about Ford, but this guy rushes the passer well and he's good in space. Who else covers Woodhead as tightly as 55 did on the final play of the game? Three big sacks today and the fans claim at least one of them with their noise. Seven unassisted tackles. Not bad for start #2. The future is bright for Dee Ford. It was nice to finally see flashes of brilliance from this kid.

9. Speaking of Woodhead, that dude had 6 touches for 13 total yards. When is the last time that guy was contained? He's a wildcard and always dangerous. He averaged 2 yards per touch today. That's huge.

8. Thanks Floyd. None of us wanted this one to go to overtime. You allowing a perfect pass to clang off your chest saved that from happening. Respect.

7. That defense though! Chargers score 6 points on the entire season versus Chiefs. Has to be a first. Even the years we shut them out at Arrowhead, they score more than 6 at home. The Chargers had 15 first downs, only two on the ground. One by penalty. Held them to 44 yards rushing. Gates is going to get his. He had 6 grabs for 76 yards. The important one was the zero under the TD column. These guys are wrapping up and finishing tackles. It's a thing of beauty.

6. I know it's wet out there but the long snapping is a problem. It's a major problem. Hasn't really had an adverse impact to a loss yet but if anything is going to cost a game against inferior competition these last few weeks, that could be one of those things usually taken for granted that can bite us.

5. 312 passes without an INT. That goes back to week three. 15/23 191 yards 1 TD/1 INT. Guy is never sexy. He's not the best QB in the league. You aren't targeting him in your fantasy draft. But he's our guy and he rarely loses a game himself. Being conservative isn't a bad thing. Please don't move this to D.C.

4. Read option destroyed Sandy Eggo. Those drives at the end of the first half where they were ripping off 8 yards per carry, then the home run to Wilson when they stacked the box... Just beautiful.

3. 10-3 reads more like a baseball score but it's rainy and nasty out there. I'd have felt a lot better with another TD but it's a notch in the right column. 8-5 with 3 to go. Who thought we'd be here 7 weeks ago? I don't know about you, but I recorded the Pittsburgh game and watched it later. I can't remember the last time I missed a Chiefs game live.

2. Hammond two fumbles in consecutive weeks. How do you implore a young guy to tuck the rock? He has to keep that ball. I realize athletic guys flail all over the place maintaining control over their body and that you take the good with the bad. But eventually these guys have to figure out where to cut their losses and get down WITH the football still in their grasp. Sometimes it takes a minute for them to figure it out.

1. At Baltimore, Cleveland here and Oakland here to close it out. These three teams have like a combined 12 wins between them. I don't know what to expect out of the Chiefs in the postseason but I do know that it's good to go in with a lot of confidence. Potentially, we could be 11-5 unless those guys get stupid. But even 10-6 earns a wildcard. I don't predict any postseason wins but anything can happen in the postseason. Like, blowing a 28 point lead. Anything.

Today was about as ugly as it gets and they still got it in the W column. If they don't clean up the penalties it's gonna bite them. Did Andy forget #87 still plays for the Chiefs. His penalty cost a td. Better acting skills and he would of got away with it.

I'd feel a lot more comfortable about the Chiefs being in the playoffs if the Jets or Steelers lost a game.

Just one is all the Chiefs need to have a bit of breathing room.

Great to be in this thing but today highlights in my opinion how much we miss JC. I like West and Ware as much as the next guy but speed is lacking and today showed. JC would have busted off several big runs but our guys just don't have the jets to get that bye bye step. Still happy we are in the hunt.

Trying to get back into it a bit, since it's almost that time of year... watched some of the first quarter on the DVR, kind of got tired of the delay of game penalties.... penalty, change of possession, commercial, timeout, commercial, delay of game, end of quarter, commercial. Skipped to the 4th.... holy fuck the Chargers are terrible, but willing their way down the field (despite still not being able to run a play outside of 3 seconds of the play clock running out) was kind of impressive. Being conservative isn't the worst thing against awful competition, I guess as long as they're that awful.

Chiefs don't need breathing room. That would ensure a loss. Keep the edge I say.

Sloppy game in sloppy conditions, But a win is a win! I agree there is some clean up needed. Isn't this 2 weeks in a row now that we've had long snapper issues?

I felt that Reid or who ever is assisting him in play calls kind of got a little cute when they should have kept pounding away with the run. For a while there the Chargers couldn't stop squat.

I always love it when the Chiefs beat the Bolts. To sweep them is just freaking outstanding.

- Ware will be essential 4th quarter in the playoffs.
- Wilson has a habit of quitting on plays
- Very strange that Reid unable to drastically cut the penalties
- It's not improving, the LS has to go
- I was ready to give up on Hali last year, now I'm ready to bring him back for next year, even if he only plays in the 2nd half.
- teams are bull rushing Tardiff more and more and he's not answering
- Ford's first step is something else
- Would hate to lose Sean Smith
- When is Gates going to retire?
- Alex's running is a major part of success. He usually gets essential yards when we need it most.

JC would have busted off several big runs but our guys just don't have the jets to get that bye bye step. Still happy we are in the hunt. I think Ware was close to breaking a long one before he got dinged up and didn't play but maybe one snap after that happened. I think if he was available they could have kept pounding the inside of the line, and eventually wore them down and a big run would have been the result.

Good read. The emergence of Dee Ford was inspiring. Thought our secondary allowed too many gaps which Rivers exploited. The read option is strong and should keep most defenses off balance. Kelcie needs to play like a champion. Hopefully, Davis can learn something from Ware's running style. Offensive Line played well. Baltimore is a decent test to close out the road games. A struggling team that plays with heart at home.

I read that and didn't know it wasn't George until the comments

I thought SD kicking the FG on 4&1 from our 11 late in the 3rd was a mistake. TD weren't going to be easy to come by in that weather and the way we play defense. They're on the road. They are close to the end zone already. And all that assumes SD doesn't give up any more points to go down more than 1 TD. McCoy became terrified and whimped out.

Arrowhead North in my garage this week. Steak and eggs, rum and orange juice. And a Chiefs win. It was an exciting game that I felt that we were going to win the whole way. The Chiefs made it interesting, not the Chargers. They are a division rival who you can never count out, but even with all the mistakes today, I never felt like we were going to lose. I can't remember the last time I had that kind of confidence in this team.

We are healing up down the stretch, and we have some very winable games on the horizon. This is the most playoff built team the Chiefs have fielded in a very long time. I'm enjoying the hell out of this ride. GO CHIEFS!!

Nice write up, Phobia. Not George, but not bad at all...

In actuality, I've had more faith in Ssntos than I did Succop. He is pretty automatic, it's just a different era for kickers, which makes it much more difficult to gauge quality. I don't think Succop would have the consistency from 30 yards like Santos does.

I think Dustin has been fine. The bad holds have all been due to bad snaps. Clean up the snaps and the holds are perfect. He's not gonna drop ever ball perfectly at the 5. It's incredibly difficult precision punting a football. Then put ten guys trying to kill you a few yards away...

In fact, Thursday we did breakfast for dinner. Homemade waffles from scratch with pure Vermont tapped maple syrup , pick your toppings omelette, and Dutch cut bacon.

Damn, I'm craving for it again, now.

The punts have been fine. Even in a slump he is still better than most punters in the league.

I may have misremembered. I thought there was a game where he shanked a few in the first half. My bad if I'm wrong about that. But his holding has not been very good. The LS has some to do with that but he has not adjusted well to the snap either.

A long snapper is paid like $800k to put a ball on a dime consistently. Many otherwise too slow, too small nfl players have made a fine living doing so. Can't do it, get out. Colquitt has never had a problem until snaps got goofy.

Agreed. Gammon did it forever and he was slower than me at the end.

Plus, Gammon got paid a lot more than 800k because he accrued enough years where he qualified for the veteran minimum which increased every year.

milkman doesn't know who Ron Swanson is, and people think God had no hand in crafting a perfect and just universe?

This little exchange may have just supplanted Jesus as God's most perfect gift to mankind.

Oh, and pancake rule, waffles drool.

Actually I like a good waffle too, but I've made great strides in pancake technique perfection, and in the process have really grown to appreciate them.

Great write up!! Good to have you around here again!!

Pretty exciting game for a 10-3 rainy mud fest. Defense and our running game won this one for us.

On D.

Chiefs held Gordon to 14 carries 35 yards and a 2.5 average- according to the announcers-Gordon is on the verge of super stardom-lol I wonder if Charger fans would agree with that? I think he will be having nightmares of Hali-who seemed to shut him down by himself with big hit after big hit for losses.

Woodshed- 1.7 average and Rivers led the team with 4.o average on 1 run. That is domination.

On passing D- we had 5 huge sacks for minus 27 yards, 1 int by DJ and held Rivers to a 64.4 passer rating with o TD's for a second straight game. 6 points in 2 games!! Rivers-meet Dee Ford!!

On offense- we gashed them on the ground all day.

West- 5.4 ave. with 15 yards on his longest run.
Ware- 6.5 and 20 long
Alex- 40 yards with 8.0 ave. This includes a late hit to the head in the second quarter that was not flagged for some reason? Alex was pissed and he should be.
Davis-chipped in with a 6.0 ave on 1 run. Pure domination!

Passing game Offense- It was a break out game for Wilson- 4 catches on 6 targets for 87 yards and the only TD of the game. 21.8 average!! Lets hope he can continue this the rest of the year.

A few nagatives- Frankiestein Jr. continues his poor play. Special teams have been a complete disaster this year-from costly penalties on nearly every return to missed field goals and bad snaps. Complete opposite of last year when they were a strength to this team. Total liability this year-horrible.

Kelce- 3 measly catches on 5 targets for a whopping 18 yards-even Harris average was higher. Continues to have trouble bringing in the ball and securing it for catches.

While Alex's streak ended with him number 2 in NFL history-the Chiefs winning streak is pushed to 7 in a row-which ties Arizona for second longest current winning streak-with Panthers at 13 in a row.

This team continues to do what needs to be done, and is overcoming dumb mistakes by dumb players that most likely will not be here next year. Hopefully they will only get better the rest of the year.

We are going to win a couple playoff games this year.

I honestly agree. Not because this team is particularly great, but because it would only make sense that after so many seasons where high expectations led to playoff losses, the first playoff win in forever would finally come after a season where we all figured they'd be angling for the #1 overall pick.

A quick and concise Ten Things. Very well done.

Brief points:
1. Let's hope the Dee Ford we saw Sunday will be a regular occurrence and not the dead beat we have seen up until this point in time.

2. We need to fix or adjust the special teams as they have sucked big elephant balls and going in the wrong direction. Too many penalties and F-Ups

3. Why didn't we run one bubble screen this past weekend after running it a million times prior? Seems like Sandy Eggo was in a good formation for us to exploit.

4. Travis Kelce drops another-not the easiest but should have had it. In all fairness, this past weekend ALL the major players had butterfingers; Malcom Floyd, Dez Bryant, Demaryius Thomas, and too many others to name. I can't remember seeing so many [prime time guys have EASY drops right in their hands.

5. Let's hope our guys can get healthy

One thing that is worrying is that wins are getting slimmer and slimmer, may be running out of steam? :\

The o-line has been banged...weather has been crap and Houston out for 2 games. Depth has saved KC's season. Playing rivals is usually tight..especially after only 3 weeks. Penalties, TOs and botched snaps made these games closer than they should have been.

Chiefs need to draft O-line in round #1, 2, 3, 4, 5....they look unbeatable when whole.

They don't need to draft O-Line in every round, but a guard and tackle would be a good draft addition.
