They basically re-made A New Hope. I was disappointed that it was so derivative of Ep 4.

When Ren took off his mask, it ruined that character for me. You have a fearsome Sith in the opening scene and then he turns into a petulant child afterward, throwing fits and destroying things. He's not someone who seems very powerful and scary like Darth Vader did. He's not evil enough, he's just a douche.

I don't like the completely CGI characters either. Why make one of the most important ones completely CGI?

I think it's more like 3 stars out of 5 for me

Saw it today. Not a Star Wars geek.

I thought it was way better than the opinions in here. It's a science fiction sequel. It's a popcorn movie. Thats the bar, not The godfather.

I enjoyed watching it with the Star Wars geeks. They cheered when the damn Lucasfilms credit came on, every time an old favorite made their first appearance in the screen. They seemed very happy with the movie.

It seemed to drag in parts. The acting was way better than the original or prequel movies. I thought it was a better movie than the Avengers/Transformers movies that have dominated the box office the last few years.

This

I could tell you months ago Dane was going to hate this movie based off of his back and forth in the threads. I think people who just watch the movies loved it. The people who got deeper into the universe, and have been writing it in their mind for 30 years just ruined it for themselves. The prequels were a complete bore and a disaster outside of some isolated parts. There was never a glimmer of emotion that connected you to anything. I dont believe for a second anyone truly believes those steaming piles of shit are better. This was a fun popcorn flick which is all most were looking for.

If 95% of people liked it you might want to say maybe I'm just a cynical dick that over analyses everything, and can't enjoy life anymore.

This whole series had had massive plot holes and shit that could be deemed stupid from the beginning. I can get why people that it never clicked with shitting all over it, but I don't get this. Was it perfect? Fuck No! The shit that's being pointed out has some validity to it, but you can also go back and rip the shit out of the OT and it's been done. The difference is you still see that through a child's eyes instead of a 30 or 40 year old message boarders eyes. It's a movie you turn your brain off and watch like an innocent kid.

I'm sorry if you get too serious about a movie with the ridiculous characters and imagery this franchise has had all along you take it too seriously and I can't relate. To me it's movies I loved as a kid . Its buying the toys and playing with my friends in the front yard. When I take my daughter at the same age and she gets a kick out of it that's all I need. It's nostalgic fun.

I truly don't believe you will ever get the movie you are looking for so go back and enjoy the movies you can still watch as a child. You've become too hard, and it's time to move on. Thug Life!!!!!

Uh, no

I truly love everything I've heard and seen about this film, especially the fact that they've gone back to Ralph McQuarrie's art and the early ideas Lucas had for Star Wars.

And I can certainly have the opinions that scenes that make no sense or characters that act out of character just to push the story along are right to be criticized. Just like you can choose to ignore the problems because "no movie is perfect."

But, I'm not completely just another movie goer. I did obsess as a youngster over the original movies. I do have some emotional investment with good memories of those original movies.

Has any sequel ever been better than the original to the fans of the original? Maybe to some Godfather II? I think most just considered that an equal. It's a damn short list that's for sure. Way too high of a bar to compare this movie to its original.

This movie was way better and not even close to the 3 prequel movies. I don't see how anyone can dispute that. Anakin was miscast, Jar Jar for crissakes. I could go on and on as you could too. It was a fun popcorn movie. It was not meant to be great cinema.

I'm not surprised you didn't like this movie, but I am surprised you ever liked the series at all. Also, if you think the prequels were better you are entitled to that opinion. It also tells me you have lost all connection with any type emotion and take life way to setiously. There may have been less plot holes for you, but those things were void of anything human. I find that sad more than anytging. Again, it has to be a character so roll on lol

Well, I think some of the claims you have made are valid. I choose to look past them and take for what it is, and what it always has been. I really don't care that much in the end. The movie could have been better, but it's what I expected. I just believe the people that didn't like it are looking past what the series has always been because they've changed. It's perfectly acceptable to say you've outgrown it, and want more. I'm not opposed to it, but I don't think it's ever happening. Perhaps if they do a series down the road. It's business and the formula works. They have no reason to change it. $$$$$$$$$

I took my grandson (4 year old) to watch his first movie in the theater. I spent as much time watching his reaction to the movie, than I did to the screen myself. He enjoyed himself, so that's good enough for me. He had a blast and even got a couple chuckles from the people seated behind us.

I want to see it regardless of what's said here. I might even read the spoiler thread. Because I'm not the type who cares about knowing plots or endings beforehand

I'm not sure I can even acknowledge the opinion of anybody who says they 'liked' the prequels. Some of the worst movies I've ever seen, there. Star Wars or otherwise.

It's a movie for kids. Why any adult would grade it technically is hilarious. I saw the Phantom Menace at age 24 and realized it wasn't for me, it was for the 10 year olds wide-eyed in the theater. Jar Jar made me sorta embarrassed to be in there

Was I the only one surprised with the "they were all dead the whole time" twist?

This was wonderful. Now we can start hoping that JJ redoes the prequels, but honestly I think they'll fade into Christmas Special territory over the next few years.

The prequels are all objectively terrible.

If anyone thinks the hate here is bad, go to the IMDB (Not to be confused with the EBDB), they are trashing the hell out of it there.

Grew up with the original trilogy as a kid, and this one felt like it belonged with those unlike the prequels.

If anyone thinks the hate here is bad, go to the IMDB (Not to be confused with the EBDB), they are trashing the hell out of it there. It's how the internet works. People who don't like something will list in great detail why they don't, try to find people who agree, try to convince people who don't, and just generally go all herd mentality. Whereas people who do like something might not get on the internet at all, or might hang around long enough to say 'that was awesome!' and then get back to it. There have actually been studies on this. Seriously. You see it a lot in stuff related to entertainment, be it games, tv or movies. (Or football... )

At the end of the day satisfied people just don't have as much vested in the expression of their opinions. People get on the internet primarily to vent. Or to argue (which is also venting...), which is primarily where you'd probably be most likely to see someone go into great detail about something they like.

But like with this movie, now that I've seen it, I haven't even gone back into the spoiler thread. No real reason to. I liked it and I'm seeing it again tomorrow and that's about the extent of my desire to talk about it...

The people trashing it will be the first ones in line on opening day of a new Star Wars film.

Without the midi-chlorians, life could not exist, and we would have no knowledge of the Force. They continually speak to us, telling us the will of the Force. When you learn to quiet your mind, you'll hear them speaking to you.

Just saw Star Wars at the IMAX tonight.

I'll echo the critics, this was the greatest Star Wars movie in the franchise since the first 3. Try to avoid spoilers, just go see it.

I can't even mention my only minor complaint about the movie without spoiling it. J.J. Abrams did a hell of a job with this movie.

Boyfriend and I went to see it Saturday instead of waiting until Christmas. We were pretty underwhelmed. The next movie or two has a ton of stuff to answer.

Go see it. First chance you get. I don't care if you've never seen a Star Wars movie in your life. It's incredible. This is going to be a cultural phenomenon.

If you've seen it, NO SPOILERS. Don't be that guy.

first 15 minutes I thought it was good, then it became apparent that it was just another generic capeshit cash grab with an enormous amount of plot holes and ham-fisted OT references. What's the point of the little white cuck bot? R2D2 is the hero of the entire series.

Finally got to see it this afternoon. I thought it was great. But I thought from the beginning Abrams took on an impossible task... basically trying to re-ignite the biggest cinematic pop culture story of our generation. I think he did it. Especially when you considering he had to mix in the old characters with a whole new batch, he handled it well.

I managed to avoid spoilers over the last 6 months, but I'm afraid to venture too far into the spoilers thread. I'm sure there's a subset of people who are going to tear it apart. I'm by no means as knowledgeable about the universe as many on this board though... but enough so that there were scenes that legit gave me goosebumps. Very well done, especially for a series that will lend itself to people picking it apart. It was a truly fun trip the movie theater.
