What's the asterisks for? Noting where you got laid as well?

I don't even know where they came from, so I deleted them.

I'll note that if a ship was in port or plying coastal waters, I counted the dock or coast as the location. Also, if a ship crossed international waters between two coasts of the same state or nation, I counted the coast as the location.

I stop every time I drive across. Maybe I should visit my parents more often.

I had to ask my parents a few questions about vacations when I was a small child, because I didn't have any receipts.

At my current rate, I'm still almost five years from passing it with Colorado. Man, I was in Missouri for a long time.

Based on my records, Missouri dropped below 50% of my total nights on November 26, 2013.

That is indeed odd. You'd think that you would have gotten lost and ended up there at some point.

I've spent the night in 42 states so far, and will hit #43 next month (Alabama). That will only leave seven states: North Dakota and all six New England states. I really need to go spend a week in New England at some point.

I don't even remember the last time I crossed a state line in a car. So, if I get lost and end up in another state, United will have some explaining to do.

Alaska is the worst place I've ever been, not counting Detroit of course. It's Colorado with no people and nothing to do.

And you've spent way more than 5 in Kansas, sorry. 8000 per on the border states but 5 between is nonsense

You would think. But I've never lived anywhere near the state boundary (other than a year in Joplin, Mo, as a small child), and I discovered the airplane once I started traveling more. The airplane really eats into Kansas' market share.

I was very torn on how to count them. Would you go with "International Waters"? Or would you just have an "aboard a ship" category that could include everything from a Mediterranean cruise to sleeping on a bass boat on a river?

Cruise ship category, definitely. Go with a regional listing.

And then you can list the times you puked over the rail or some such fun facts.

I'd say it's probably half work and half leisure. The international stuff is all leisure, and a lot of the short domestic stays (but not all) were for work. I'm a market research and strategy consultant.

Impressive variety. How do you only spend one night in Tahiti? And what's the story behind the longer international stays?

After nearly 24 hours of travel from the East Coast, there was a delay that caused me to miss my connection to Bora Bora so I had one night in Tahiti then on to Bora Bora.

I'm not military but assume you may be. Am I right?

I see some cool places like Nepal, Egypt, Madagascar, South Korea and Peru on your list. Places I would like to visit but Egypt scares me now.

I've always wanted to do a month trip to Africa starting in Morocco, then to Egypt, down the Nile to Tanzania and Kenya for safari, and then over to the Seychelles for the last week. That was the trip I had been planning in mid 1987 while I was finishing up a 10 week trip earlier in the year that was Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, Barbados, Rio, Caymans. Then the stock and housing market collapsed and that was that. Still want to do that trip.

Also I still want to go to the Galapagos, England/Ireland, Scandinavian countries, Eastern Europe with the hot chicks, and Greece.

I did a lot of business in China and Hong Kong so many long and frequent stays. I speak some Mandarin Chinese.

I lived in Toronto for a year so that's why Canada so much plus we had an office there once when I worked in Silicon Valley.

Also, I will NEVER do a cruise. I would do a shared charter on a private motor yacht

A couple of ones off the top of my head...

I've spent the night buried in the sand under a stilt house on the beach of the Maryland coast so I wouldn't freeze to death that night after consuming a case of Black Label.

I've spent the night on the top of a M106 mortar carrier in the forests of Barvaria so that the roaming pack of wild pigs wouldn't gore me to death.

I've spent the night in Miami in the closest of a married woman when her husband unexpectedly came home early from a business trip.

I've spent the night in a Las Vegas hotel with a Hustler model I met in the elevator on the way up to my room.
