It is going to be cold in Minneapolis for the playoff game.

This will not be as cold as the Polar Vortex that we had two years ago.
I had -45 wind chill, -32 actual temperature.
There is a thread around here somewhere.

The NWS forecast:

Saturday Night

Partly cloudy, with a low around -8. Wind chill values as low as -23. Northwest wind 5 to 15 mph.
Sunday

Sunny and cold, with a high near 3. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

This will be one of the coldest games in NFL history. They are asking fans to take precautions to prepare for the cold. If it is this cold, it could be anyone's game.

question-If it was THAT cold -45. Would the NFL cancel/postpone/move the game in the name of saftey of players and fans.

Yes, I think there is a point where the NFL would have to consider other options but I have no idea what they would do. I know I wouldn't sit through those temps. Won't be an issue again after this year though.

Why Not?

Yeah, dude. Not a good look for the NFL if 45,000 people die at a game

This is why I thought the Vikings should try to win last weekend against Green Bay. Yeah you get Seattle... but they're at home and it is going to be freeeeezing.

I'm not really sure it's going to be that much of an advantage for the Vikings, sure they're a little more used to dealing with cold but it's still going to have an effect on them as well.

the 1996 Chiefs-Indy is #3 coldest playoff game -6F

The schedule has changed since the Vikings played outside.
There is a bye week, season starts a week later.

I don't think it's a big deal. People do all kinds of things outside when it's 0. It isn't that uncommon here. I don't think Minneapolis cancels school until it's -20.

Anybody who is going to the game needs to dress accordingly but that is common sense.

That being said, I live walking distance from the stadium and I wouldn't go sit out there for free ticket.

Its at least -20. Our district (Robbinsdale) is about the same, but there is no written rule.

Once it gets 'cold' we get used to it. Then it is not a problem.

A bit off subject looking at your site, but how do you calculate the cloud base? Is there instrumentation that does that?

that is done by the software. WeatherDisplay.
It would use current pressure and wind to calculate the base.

from the author and the forum =((outdoor_temperature(c)-dewpoint(c))*412) (ft)

(Temp - Dewpoint)/4.5 gives the height of the clouds above ground level in thousand feet when the temperatures are in °F .

then a reply

Don't take it too seriously, it's an estimate of where clouds could start to form, but it's not an absolute value - you need big bucks equipment to actually measure cloud height and coverage.

Always fun to talk weather.

More like 40 and drizzle. People have this weird misconception that it rains in Seattle like it does everywhere else. For the most part it just mists and drizzles all day for days at a time. It will be like regular rain occasionally but not for the most part.

This cold snap is the first one of the winter. So they are warning people about it. Its not even close to the normal cold that we can get or the length of time it can happen. We get used to the cold. It doesn't take long.
