HUMBLE, Texas — The iconic car that came to represent the future became a thing of the past when the company stopped production in 1983. DeLorean Motors announced Wednesday that the recognizable car is coming back to the present.
The Texas car company said they are resuming production of the DeLorean for the first time in more than 30 years.
“It’s fantastic,” Stephen Wynne, CEO of DeLorean Motors in Humble, Texas, told KPRC in Houston. “It’s a game-changer for us. We’ve been wanting this to happen.”
Wynne brought the company to its Texas location, where the cars will be manufactured for the first time on American soil.
The company will build the iconic 1982 model through a low-volume manufacturing bill approved by the federal government, meaning the total number of cars will be limited.
The bill exempts car manufacturers from the safety requirements applied to new cars in the production of “replica” vehicles.
A new DeLorean comes with a sizable $100,000 price tag, but buyers can snag a refurbished model for $45,000 to $55,000.
Wynne said he estimates the company will have the first new DeLorean roll off the production line early next year… flux capacitor not included.
