Depends on the virus.

Try googling the name of the processes....

In general any of the main ones are OK though...like malware, house call, avg etc

Avast

Defender is vastly inferior.

Macs get viruses and malware.

Run Spybot once a month.

Nothing wrong with Avast, but don't assume it's invincible either.

Yup! It's a little bit of a resource hog at times but it catches everything and updates all the time to keep you protected from the latest and worst viruses and exploits.

Must be nice to have money to burn.

Certainly not cheap, but if it's something you use all the time and you really like Apple, I'd say go for it.

I just haven't found anything they do that's all that important to me.

The only thinking I really like(d) about Apple was their stock.. :D

But I still like their screen resolution "better," but it's not worth the added price IMO.

The rest is a wash.

AVG Free and Malwarebytes

cron912
02-09-2016, 11:15 AM
Avast and Avira are probably the best two free options.

And unless AVG has changed it's product and practices, AVG itself is a form of malware. I haven't used or looked at AVG in a while, and won't consider it as an option anytime soon due to their practices in the past.

Edit: Malwarebytes is good as well. Microsoft Security Essentials is ok; better than not having any protection.

Legit porn sites are some of the most secure sites on the planet. Well streaming sites.

political/religious sites are where the malware is at.

shit. If you are smart a good add blocker is all you need.

Actually, the WORST sites for malware and browser exploits come from celebrity related searches, photos and stories along with some of the dumb click bait ads.

One more for Avast.

This is useful if you go that route: http://lifehacker.com/how-to-disable-avasts-annoying-sounds-and-popups-1530732542

You also need some common sense with any solution you use.

Nope, not even McAfee

http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/john-mcafee-mcafee-antivirus-one-worst-products-planet-1516462

Antivirus pioneer John McAfee has said the eponymous software he created was not really up to scratch. Responding to a question in a Reddit AMA, the self-described eccentric millionaire said: "McAfee is one of the worst products on the f**king planet."

Doesn't play well with other programs

I have been working in IT for over 15 years and clean computers regularly. I install the free version of Avast and Malwarebytes on all of my new loads. McAfee and Norton both will slow your computer down. I have had good experience with AVG as well but Avast ends up winning due to the fact it doesn't use a lot of resources to run and keeps your computer running fast. You can register it for a year for free and if you opt to pay for the extra features it is very reasonable. Malwarebytes is a top 5 program on most people's favorite spyware fighting programs. I also use superantispyware and combined with malwarebytes it will clean most of the issues you will come across (you can't get anything that is 100% effective because there are always new spyware to fight). You can get a bunch of great spyware fighting programs at www.bleepingcomputer.com.

If you guys ever want performance data for all things Anti-Virus, check this site out:
https://www.av-test.org/en/

I happen to use AVG and my sidekicks are MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, SuperAntiSpyware (still really good at getting rid of tracking cookies) and Glary Utilities (I like it for all CCleaner doesn't do and what CCleaner does do can be done In-browser).

Several of my more techy buddies recommend Avira. I use it and have had no issues. While it does it's regular searching, it uses its own crawling tool called "Luke Filewalker."

AVG is too resource-heavy. Not terrible, but not as good as Avira or Avast.

I like Avira but it did seem to have some glitches etc back when i tried to use it.

It didn't seem to work well with other programs.

Now that was a couple of years ago, so maybe it has improved now.
