Is anything at McDonald's technically considered meat? I'll bet you could have anything off the menu and be alright with God.

Sweet short lines getting meat on Fridays. Nothing better than chowing down a juicy burger in front of some chode that forces themselves to eat fish.

I'm actually going to pick something up for Lent. This year it's a daily devotional by Matthew Kelly called Rediscovering Jesus. Pretty good so far, and it's a short thing to do daily, which helps a schlub like me who is not very good at maintaining this type of stuff. I'm also going to try to cut back on booze...

I like fish tacos, so it's not such a bad thing on Fridays for me...

It's not red meat, which is the prescribed prohibition.

some people take that to the extreme and count eggs in there too. I don't get that at all.

Yeah, that's weird. The flesh of a living animal is meat. Fish is meat. Chicken is meat. Beef is meat.

So you can have pork and chicken?

Heh. Should have thought that through. You are right, not supposed to have any meat from land dwelling animals. So no chicken or pork either. Or venison. Or buffalo.

It's not required to eat fish. Rather it's a discipline not to eat "meat". So you can eat pasta if you can't do fish.

So what is the reasoning behind eating no land-based animal protein?

If there is no eating meat on Fridays, then why is eating fish allowed for Catholics? The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops states that fish are a different category of animal. So it’s only the meat of warm-blooded animals that is prohibited. Eggs, butter, and milk are also allowed

I've actually really been craving (baked) fish for about the last two years.

I'll admit that fukishima and lead-heavy Chinese fish farms have made me back off a bit lately...

From catholichotdish.com:

Since Jesus sacrificed his flesh for us on Good Friday, we refrain from eating flesh meat in his honor on Fridays. Flesh meat included the meat of mammals and poultry, and the main foods that come under this heading are beef and pork, chicken and turkey. While flesh is prohibited, the non-flesh products of these animals are not (like milk, cheese, butter and eggs).

Actually, here is the answers from the Catholic Church as to why we do what we do regarding Lent. Others have their ideas about it, but if you want to know why Catholics do what we do...ask the Church:

Just picked up the book yesterday when our parish was giving it out after mass yesterday. Very interested in starting that reading.
