View Full Version : Money What are some good @home part time jobs for say-at-home moms?

Like many other families, having a little extra cash here and there would take the ease and stress off some of the daily grind and bills.

I work 50-60 hours a week. My wife is a stay at home mom. But she does help out her parents with there home business and will get cash on the side for doing so. However, this isn't very often and is not something that we can rely on.

We have 2 boys. Our oldest has medical issues and goes to specialist a couple times a week...sometimes more. It is hard for her to find a job that would offer any sort of flexibility that would let her take the prolonged time off that our son needs. In addition, she has our 3 year old to watch over as well.

We got to talking about perhaps her picking up 10-20 hours a week working from home...doing 'something'. But we weren't sure. A quick google search brought up some sketchy opportunities as Data Entry, Secret Shoppers, etc. I wanted to pick CP's brain if there are any other members who has a spouse in a similar situation, and if they work from home.

Have her look into getting a certified coding certificate. Most coders work from home, pulling in starting around $18, and the sky's the limit with many inpatient and specialty coders making over $30 an hour. I am actually taking a coding class right now as part of my curriculum getting my Health Information Management Degree at KU. It's a decently interesting class, and a lot are thinking about doing this after they graduate.

Interesting.

What exactly is it? At first blush I am picturing entering a bunch of numbers into an excel spreadsheet....she can do this.

If it is getting into binary packet capturing IT stuff...that probably isn't going to work for her.

What they do is read charts after a patient is discharged, and assign medical codes to things such as diagnosis, BMI, smoking status, ect. These codes are using for reimbursement purposes for the hospital, as well as reporting/trends, ect. It's basically how every hospital, outpatient, and physicians office gets paid. It really doesn't rely on spreadsheets, or heavy IT work. You get familiar with the encoding software that's easy to use, utilize an official coding guideline that walks you through steps to ensure the code is correct, and that's about it.

It isn't IT "stuff" at all.

Clinical Coding is "the translation of medical terminology as written by the clinician to describe a patient's complaint, problem, diagnosis, treatment or reason for seeking medical attention, into a coded format" which is nationally and internationally recognised.

This sounds like it may be right up her alley. With our son who is in and out of specialist weekly, she has told me how interesting some of this medical jargon is.

Say you have 0 experience...how many classes or how long does it take to get a 'certificate'.

*I am googling this on the side as well.

My wife sells mostly clothing on eBay, and a couple other sites. If she has a good eye for fashion, and styles then she may be able to do that. My wife goes to the thrift stores, gets lots of good clothing both with and without tags, and makes a decent amount of money doing so.

You have to buy the merchandise you're going to sell. The shipping is paid by either the customer, or the site. Goes along the normal lines, it takes money to make money.

No... $3 an hour per kid in my area is very common.. Most people only make $10-12 an hour where I live. Don't live in a city.

How about I round up about 100 kids at $15 an hour that most people pay around here, I'll put them all in the back of an extra large U-haul, drive them out, pay your wife $7 bucks an hour and you send them back to me at the end of the week?

As an FYI, there are legitimate ways to make money as a secret shopper, but it's going to be on the order of $50 a month and maybe a free fast food meal or two. It's not going to be regular work.

Ours charges $20/day/kid. $3/HR isn't out of line. I would never do it. Ever. But it isn't out of line.

Ours gets state subsidies for food so that helps.

Well selling some products can always work. We have a friend who is a stay at home mom of two girls. She sells Rodan and Fields (makeup stuff) products and makes an extra bit of money every month and can obviously set her own schedule. Obviously there is start up costs in this and it's just one giant pyramid scheme, but who knows, some people are good at selling products like that if they have a large social group which can make it easy.

Exactly, I don't get why people were getting worked up about only $3 an hour. .. so you pay roughly $2.50 a hour

I am just lucky I make enough money where my wife gets to stay home and raise the kids. Her money goes straight to our house fund.

Last night, I was unable to attend a concert with my Mrs. because we couldn't find a sitter.

Prices for off hour child care have gone up quite a bit from what I can tell. You can't get a HS kid for less than $7/hr very often, and they usually have my kids awake 1-2hrs when we go out, and a couple of hours of TV.

Maybe she could consider child care...if not full time, off hours, evenings and weekends when available. She could do Ok at that for extra cash.

Is she handy?
There is a lot of money to be made these days buying old furniture and repurposing it. I buy solid but ugly dressers and refinish or paint them some stupid color and sell them....or buy them and sell them to people who do that and get my cut without the work. Pick up items at garage sales-auctions-craigslist...she can work in the garage/shop when she has time and sell crap to other soccer moms. Desks also seem to go well.
