View Full Version : Electronics Teacher forced to resign after student steals phone and spreads nude pic

WTF?

How should she be held responsible? Sure, she failed to lock the phone, but the kid stole it and the pics were never meant to be made public.

A teacher at Union County High School has resigned after a student spread a nude picture of her through text messages and social media, according to Union County School District interim superintendent David Eubanks.

Eubanks said a student got hold of Leigh Anne Arthur's phone and took a picture of a nude picture that was on her phone.

He said the student then sent the picture out through text messaging and social media.

The incident happened on Monday and Arthur resigned on Tuesday, Eubanks said.

Eubanks said Arthur was in the wrong because her phone was unlocked and she made the nude picture available to her students.

Arthur said she took the picture to give to her husband.

She said the student took the phone from her desk while she was patrolling the halls.

She feels the student should be held responsible for his actions.

Arthur said he knows right from wrong, "He had the ultimate decision to take pictures of my pictures and he had the ultimate decision to send them out."

She said, "He had to hit my apps button and to open up all my apps and then open my gallery."

The Union County Sheriff's Office is now investigating. Eubanks said the office will determine whether the student is charged.

Resigning was probably inevitable. That's a huge incident that would be a major distraction for the students and teachers. It sucks, but she'll go work somewhere else.

That kid should definitely be charged, though. He has to be held responsible.

Then she shouldn't have nudes.

She shouldn't have brought them on school grounds in any format. There is probably a school rule prohibiting her from doing so if you dug through the rule books long enough. At the very least if she has those pics on her phone then she should have the phone either in her possession or physically locked up so that only she has access to it. Teenage kids are getting in trouble legally for sharing nude pics of themselves. In that kind of environment...this is a really stupid mistake for a teacher to make.

Kid is in the wrong. Invasion of privacy. Don't touch other peoples stuff-especially the teacher (me)

A few years ago, I had a phone on my desk, I never lock it.

I left, a kid texted my number to him and started texting me messages.
I sent one back "who is this?" He sent to me " i don't know" you texted me"

I dropped the issue. Of course I knew it could be one of three kids. One of them ratted out the other two. So I played along.

A few days later, I confronted the kids. Told them that I was called into the principals office. A mom wondered why a teacher was texting her kid.
Then one of them said "it couldn't have been my mom, she does not speak English"

HA, CAUGHT!!!!!!!!

I told them I lied, no parent ever complained and I was never called into the office.

They never did anything like that again.

There are really two separate issues.

The first is the matter of fault and blame. That's on the kid. He stole her private phone and sent her private pictures to other kids. Lock him up.

The second is the matter of making this horrible situation even possible. It's not victim blaming to say that this never would have happened if a) the pictures were not on the phone, and/or b) the phone was locked/encrypted or not even on school grounds. Hell, if she had not left the phone out it might not have happened. No one deserves to be violated and harassed like this, but there are preventative measures one can take to minimize the chances of something bad happening.

True, but there a huge difference in a penalty between the 2 issues.

What the teacher did wrong was being careless with her phone.

It doesn't matter. I can't do it (according to the rules) in a warehouse job. Generally speaking the rules don't come into play because most people are smart enough not to get caught. Still the rules are there and I had to sign off on them. I would imagine that a High School has similar if not much more stringent rules regarding the subject. I would also imagine that she has documentation in her file showing that she signed off on those rules.

Most organizations have a pretty strict policy about bringing suggestive media into the workplace. The article mentions nothing about what is going to be done to the kid other than that it is currently under investigation. As of right now no one is being protected by anything and the teacher resigned. You might notice that the article is titled "Teacher Resigns After..." and not "Teacher Is Forced To Resign After..." It's a false thread title meant to create a narrative.

In my view they both did. If you're a High School teacher right now, and you are unaware that kids have been prosecuted for distributing child pornography based on sharing or possessing (even their own) pics on cell phones, or you are unaware of the impact that has had on how possession of media is viewed in the workplace, especially in a High School, then I would question your ability to make adult decisions.

C'mon, man. Your argument of the rules regarding pornography is from a technical standpoint, but it leaves no room for common sense. She had pictures of herself, for personal use, on her personal cell phone. She may have snapped them over the weekend, and forgotten about them. It's almost a sure thing that she didn't bring the phone to work with the intent to bring pornography to work.

That being said, rules are rules, so she lost the job, so be it.

But in no way did she cross the same level of line that the student did.

entering a password each time you use it is a major pass in the ass

Most phones have other ways to unlock them.

My phone has a eye scanner where you can unlock by looking into camera. It also has a symbol lock where you can just draw some design(circle, square etc) on the screen with your figure to unlock it. Both much faster than entering a password.

Do you believe there's a difference between the "suggestive media" on her phone and any other phone with access to pornhub or redtube?

Personally I don't see her being at fault in any way.

I'm also reminded why not in a million years would I teach in a school of teenagers.

It's not a matter of "access" to media. When you actually go to those sites on a work computer, some of those images will be stored on your work computer. A computer doesn't work like a TV set. That's one of the reasons that Chiefs Planet has the NSFW tags. They keep the image from loading on the page. So the image, or a record of it, is never actually stored on your work computer. So, yeah, there is a big difference between carrying a device onto school grounds that you know has forbidden imagery on it and merely being in possession of a device that is capable of accessing forbidden imagery if used improperly.

My iPhone has a 4-digit password. It takes one second to key it in. With IOS 8 I can also unlock it with my thumbprint.

When I pick it up I don't even think about it. I just take 1 second to unlock it. And I know nobody is going to unlock it (unless the US government prevails in their bullshit lawsuit against Apple).

That being said, this teacher got screwed.

The teenager is charged with computer crimes and aggravated voyeurism, police said.
He will 'get off' using the pron-fluenza defense.

What if Tinder, Pornhub, Redtube or any other variety of apps are installed on your phone? Are those a violation of your work agreement?
According to your logic they are a direct violation and your place of work should be able to dictate what you have installed on your phone.

She was stupid for not securing her phone. Regardless she is the victim and it’s private property no matter where it is placed.

entering a password each time you use it is a major pass in the ass

Most phones have other ways to unlock them.

My phone has a eye scanner where you can unlock by looking into camera. It also has a symbol lock where you can just draw some design(circle, square etc) on the screen with your figure to unlock it. Both much faster than entering a password.

I just use the thumbprint scanner but the locking phone with a password concept is the same. Ultimately is a password whatever quicker way you have to authenticate.

Do the apps contain inappropriate media as outlined by your workplace rules?
