I'm sorry but this is hilarious

Report: Raiders, Osemele agree to deal worth $11M annually

The Oakland Raiders and impending free-agent guard Kelechi Osemele have reached an agreement in principle on a big-money deal, NFL Network's Rand Getlin reports.

The agreement, which cannot become official until the start of the NFL's new league year on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, is worth more than $11 million annually, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

That will make Osemele one of the NFL's highest-paid offensive linemen.

Osemele, the Baltimore Ravens' second-round pick in 2012, played right and left tackle but mostly served as a guard over the first four seasons of his career. He's a dominating presence in the run game, and plenty capable in pass protection, too.

Adding Osemele to the interior offensive line would give the Raiders a beastly trio of Rodney Hudson at center and Osemele and Gabe Jackson at guard.

It would also be an expensive collection of players at a place many NFL teams are frugal. Hudson signed a five-year, $44.5-million contract last offseason.

With left tackle Donald Penn a pending free agent, it's possible the Raiders see Osemele as a long-term answer on the outside of their line. He's certainly being paid as such.

Drastically overpay for an average player when there are tons of impact players on the market?

He is a good signing for the Raiders. They need to protect Carr. They should be able to pick up at least 7-8 impact players with all the money they have.

Doesn't mean they won't make a few bonehead moves as they normally do but they can certainly can do some damage along the way.

The NFL has adjusted the rules of the legal tampering period to allow the actual negotiation of contracts in the two days before free agency begins. The revised rules are clear about what is prohibited. Among other things, a team cannot “execute an agreement in principle” with the agent for a player who is not yet free to sign elsewhere.

Based on multiple reports from multiple members of the small army of reporters who are employed directly by the NFL, the Raiders have violated this provision by striking an “agreement in principle” with guard Kelechi Osemele.

The involvement of NFL employees in reporting to the public violations of the NFL’s rules regarding the legal tampering period makes an already bizarre situation even more confusing. The league on one hand wants teams to not reach agreements in principle during the two-day negotiation period; on the other hand, the league employs people with the primary job duty of gathering evidence of instances in which the rule has been violated.

NFL Media is the NFL. In this specific context, the NFL is both prohibiting certain conduct and generating Internet traffic (and presumably revenue) by publicizing instances of the very conduct that the NFL prohibits.

The easiest solution would be to allow agreements in principle to be reached and announced during the legal tampering period, with the caveat that the deals aren’t final until the league year opens and the contract is officially signed.

Not if the deal is structured like all the others Reggie gave out recently. It's easy to move on from all the players we've signed recently after a year or two.

It's a risky move considering he's had back and knee injuries, along with only three starts at left tackle, but he's a beast when healthy.

I think that contract most likely spells the end of Penn for the Raiders, but if you all do sink a good chunk into your O-Line, I'll be thrilled. That's too many positions falling by the wayside for one unit.
