This is untrue. They had more money offered to Mack on the table when he signed with ATL (CLE $10 mil v $9.5 with ATL). They had the top offer out to Schwartz when they pulled it ($7.5 million per) but felt Schwartz wasn't serious about signing and just using the team as leverage.

The stories of lowball offers were from free agents of other teams. They offered Mack and Schwartz their biggest deals and they chose to not take them.

Sports Illustrated's Peter King reported the average annual salary on Mack's five-year contract with the Falcons will be $9.5 million. He could have stayed with the Browns for $10 million per year, according to the report, but instead chose to join Shanahan.

http://dawgpounddaily.com/2016/03/09/report-cleveland-browns-pull-offer-mitchell-schwartz/

Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot reported earlier this morning that the Browns had offered Schwartz a lengthy contract worth nearly $7.5 million per season, a deal that reportedly put them in a good position to retain the four-year veteran.

Hearing RT Mitchell Schwartz has a decent chance of returning to the #Browns. About $7.5 million a year.

— Mary Kay Cabot (@MaryKayCabot) March 9, 2016

That contract would make Schwartz the second-highest paid right tackle in the NFL, only behind Lane Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles, who earned a hefty payday last season at $11 million per year. Sounds pretty nice for both parties, right? At least until the Pro Football Talk report came out stating that Cleveland no longer had their offer on the table.

The confusion is increasing for Browns fans and even agents are bewildered by the hesitation on the part of Cleveland’s front office. It was perceived that the Browns would certainly lose two of their guys, but it was also expected that the organization would bring back either Mack or Schwartz.

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2016/03/browns_mitchell_schwartz.html

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns have sprung another big leak on their formerly stout offensive line. Right tackle Mitchell Schwartz has agreed to a five-year deal with the Chiefs, a league source confirmed for cleveland.com.

The Browns are believed to have offered Schwartz about $7.5 million a year recently, but rescinded their offer on Wednesday as Schwartz tested the free agent waters.

Mike Silver has always had an axe to grind with the Browns, and it's easy to say that now that it's over "oh but I really wanted to stay." If he wanted to stay, he would have signed it before they pulled it. He was using the Browns.

I'm so glad Donald Stephenson and Jeff Allen are gone. Stephenson is the worst draft pick this franchise has ever seen. Yep, that's right - the absolute worst.

One pick before a Super Bowl winner, two time NFC championship winner. When we needed a QB. And why? So our horrible GM wouldn't threaten his horrible QB that he got in a horrible trade and signed to a horrible contract.

Nobody gives a shit that the Seahawks overpaid for Matt Flynn. They don't care at all. Because Russell Fucking Wilson came in and wiped that travesty from the face of the earth. Which is exactly what should have happened in Kansas City.

Instead we draft a brokedick bust.

Fuck you, Scott Pioli.

Fuck you so fucking hard.

That's because most of those guys barely know that Kansas City has a football team.

Allen couldn't stay healthy and Stephenson wasn't as good without the juice.

not to mention that Stephenson also seemed a bit lazy

Sure, and it's totally within his rights, but the Browns had the biggest offer on the table for him, so to not take it and try to drive up the price then turn around and say he "really wanted to stay in Cleveland" is disingenuous to me.

I don't begrudge him that, you guys are getting a good player and it's his chance to make as much money as he wants, but I don't get why he needs to put that last part out there to try to make the Browns look worse.

Hard to tell what happened.

Browns probably wanted him to commit to the contract right then but when Schwartz said he wanted to think about it, they pulled it.

sucks ... don't blame either side really

Cleveland can't let themselves be used and the player has a right to think about it.

I really do hope that Cleveland gets it together, fan base deserves better.

I don't think you understand...our pass defense was not substantially better in 2015 than it was in 2014, and that was withOUT Peters.

Peters, Gaines, Berry, and Parker are a phenomenal core to have. We have an 18 million dollar pass rusher for a reason, let's just hope he does his job.

ProFootballFocus rates Mitchell Schwartz the NFL's best right tackle

BEREA, Ohio -- Mitchell Schwartz is oft maligned by folks in Cleveland who follow the Browns.

But the team’s right tackle has drawn notice around the league. One line coach called him among the top five right tackles in the game, while the website ProFootballFocus.com gave him its best rating.

In an ESPN Insider piece naming the most underrated players at each position based on PFF grades, Schwartz was given the nod at right tackle. He was called “the unheralded bookend tackle in Cleveland to Joe Thomas (who) actually has the fourth-best pass-blocking grade of all tackles.”

Told where Schwartz ranked among right tackles, coach Mike Pettine quipped: “Good for Mitch.”

PFF’s John Kosko provided some more detail on Schwartz. Kosko said PFF’s rankings show:

Schwartz ranks seventh among all tackles, first among those on the right side.

Of the Browns' 260 dropbacks, 81 have been seven-step drops, second highest in the league. This puts more pressure on the offensive line, which is factored into the rankings.

Schwartz has given up 12 total pressures in 260 dropbacks, about one in every 22 plays.

Von Miller entered last Sunday’s game leading the league in pressures. Against Schwartz, he got just one pressure.

Schwartz is not a dominant run blocker, but he’s better than average, ranking ninth in the league at his position.

The Browns have been sacked 22 times this season, but PFF’s analytics attribute 10 of the sacks to the backs or the quarterbacks holding the ball too long. That, Kosko, says, has skewed the perception of the offensive line.

Say this for Schwartz: He has good timing.

His contract is up after this season and if the Browns don’t re-sign him he could be a free agent.

He signed a 4 year deal with Seattle just a couple hours ago. From Rotoworld -

----------------------------------

Seahawks re-signed CB Jeremy Lane to a four-year contract.

Turning 26 this July, Lane is a quality young slot corner whose durability limited his market value. He was a difference maker when healthy down the stretch of last season, however, playing stingy slot coverage and intercepting two passes in the final six games. The Seahawks' secondary should return intact with Richard Sherman and Deshawn Shead at outside corner, Lane in the slot, and Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor manning the safeties. Mar 9 - 8:40 PM

What an amazing deal. The AAV, the structure, the fit and the quality of the player. It's just unreal he got that guy for what the Texans gave Allen, a guy who isn't as good as Schwartz even when he's healthy (and he's never healthy).

It really does defy belief.

It sounds a lot like a "I want to win a Super Bowl" older veteran deal.

But Schwartz is 26 years old.

Absolutely amazing.

I still can't comprehend how we signed a guy that is arguably one of the best at his position, has thus far been durable thru his NFL career (although back issues in college), ....for $6 million a year.

6 million a year to stop players that get paid 15-18 mil a year. Astounding.

This might finally address the position.

Less than 8 months ago people were ready to sacrifice their first borns over the number of question marks the line was facing. The Chiefs had just let their best offensive lineman from a year ago walk to a division rival, and were down to Paul fucking Fanaika as their starting RT.

What the fuck changed?

Dorsey did what I told you all was the best option.

Patience. Patience. Patience.

And now one FA acquisition later, we've got the best OL in the division, one of the top OT combos in the conference, and 4 of the 5 expected starters are all under 26 years of age. We didn't spend a fucking 1st rounder on the interior line, or waste our top draft picks on OL in consecutive years.

Favorite thing about Schwartz is that he's pretty steady no matter what you throw at him. He can deal with power, dude's with size and length, as well as the smaller speed guys. As long as he continues his trend of staying healthy, should be set at both tackle positions for a long time.
