I always thought that ELP was pretentious crap. It was likeable pretentious crap, but pretentious crap nonetheless. It helped to be balls stoned before dropping the needle. Thanks for the mellow afternoons, sir.

I never thought much of ELP. They just seemed to become popular at a time when my musical tastes as a kid didn't like their type of music. I always thought of them as a poor man's Yes, who I liked.

RIP to one of my musical heroes, a guy I first began listening to as a 5-year-old when my mother gave me the cassette of ELP's "Tarkus" because she didn't like it and I loved the cover art. Later I collected not only ELP's albums, but most of The Nice's as well.

As I've grown older I've become a bit less-enamored of the flashy technique, that crams as many notes into a measure as possible, as I was in my youth. But Keith in his prime could be exciting to watch, and when I finally saw ELP live in 1992, they still put on a fine show.

True story: Lemmy of Motorhead started out as a roadie with The Nice. He gave Keith a Hitler Youth knife as part of the set he used to stab into the keyboard to hold notes down while he did other things. That knife must've been cursed, because now both men are gone within months of each other.
