Part of the yard is shaded by the house and the neighbor's tree. Also gets some shade from one of our trees.

Rarely gets any direct sun.

Best grass type for heavy shade and where it has to fight for water with 2 full size trees?

Thanks

Crab Grass, Water Grass and Chickweed seem to be my best growers.

Sabre is a shade grass, but it has shallow roots so it's not particularly good in dry climates. Of course, if you have a sprinkler system and can keep it moist, it should do okay.

I really like the classic OG Kush for some heavy shade.

I wonder how much it would cost to field turf a small yard in the front.

Or, just pour concrete over the entire front and back yard. I would like that kind of lawn maintenance

This. Here in the northeast, not knowing anything else, I would say tall fescue. I will leave it to you guys to help him in the midwest.

On a serious note I always remember George Toma mentioning for this area around KC Hound Dog is his preferred and used for his lawn. Toby Tobin even recommended. Its been a while back dont know if its still a thing or not. It is a fescue and can be found at many Westlake Hardware.

Surprised nobody has mentioned "creeping red fescue". Does very well in low light areas. It is a fescue thus small bladed and less water.

Do some research, but in KS, that would be your best idea.

Also think about making this area a "hosta" garden in combo with the red fescue. Instead of fighting shade, make it your friend. Look up shade plants, rock around the place, plant and mulch. It is low maintainance. I have a quite a few maples in the yard and use the red grass. Around my drive, made a shade garden.

Keep in mind, in the yard, it will never look like a golf course.

Build a deck and rock in the rest with some shrubs. No lawn to mow winning
