This usually means I get really excited and we get blown out. That's been the trend in years past for my Friday game threads.

GO ROYALS!

Ventura looks to be throwing a lot of two-seam fastballs to me, which is why the velocity is down. Also throwing a lot of changeups, and I think he's still toying with the cutter.

Haven't seen many straight four-seamers, which is where his velocity goes 97-98-99.

Command of his fastball is more important than his raw velocity. But Rick is dug in on him needing to throw max effort, max velocity all the time to get results.

I don't understand Hootie's take on Ventura. Last season he said that Ventura is destined for the closer role because he can't pitch anything other than the fastball, but this is the exact reason he thinks Herrera is overrated and an expendable piece of our bullpen.

Ventura deserves until at least 2017 to prove he belongs in the rotation. After that I'd be fine with him moving to the pen.

Twins announcers trivia question:

Who was the last Royals pitcher to average more K's per nine innings than Ventura in 2015?

My first guess was wrong so i'll follow-up with a guess of Greinke in his Cy Young season.

Goldberg is right. I was reading about Sano having very little work in the OF. I can't wait to see a ball get to him in this series. It should be pretty hilarious.

I understand where he's coming from - I think he doesn't believe Ventura will ever develop enough as a pitcher to overcome things if he isn't as impressive a "thrower."

Ventura can afford to lose a little velocity if he becomes a more refined "pitcher"...

And he's also throwing mainly two-seamers in this outing and pumping them at 95-96. That means, to me, his four-seamer velocity would likely be in its usual 97-99 range.

I really don't want to even get into this argument, but Ventura is 24 years old, and has only pitched two years in the league, and for 75% of that time has pitched effectively. You don't give up on a guy like that. It shouldn't even be an argument.

Re: Miguel Sano...

I think the guy is going to be a bust.

He's huge and has great raw power, but he also strikes out a TON (43 percent punchout rate last year, 30 percent K rate in the minors).

I think his bat is limited by that K rate, and as for playing him in RF...

Well, I think that's an absolute disaster long-term. He's big, stiff, and slow, and he's going to cost the Twins 20-25 runs if they leave him in RF all year.

To me his development into a consistent starter is as much dependent on the mental aspect of baseball as it is the physical. Yo was absolutely filthy in the second half, and if he can keep his emotions in check while throwing a 97 mph fastball with reliable secondary pitches, he could be a 2-3 starter in the league for a long time. But if he lets batters get in his head in 2016, (staredown with Trout, flare-ups with the White Sox and A's, etc), then I wouldn't be surprised if 2017 is his "make or break" season as a starter.

They had Duffy on a similar timeline.

Matt Stairs could play a passable LF/RF, at least.

I think they could probably hide Sano a little better in LF, but playing him in RF just seems like an epic disaster.

Agree, sadly. I was as big a Duffy fan as there was, but I don't see a way he comes back from this as a Royal and is a reliable starter again.

One of those cases where a scenery change might be the only thing that can get him to reach his potential.
