No flash, just smash. Harkened back to the guys of the 90's Chiefs Defense.

Damn. I was hoping to see him in KC one more year...but this is one of the best DL draft classes in history and on top of that we have a couple young guys looking for increased roles, so the writing was on the wall.

He was a good player for us.

Ouch. This hurts. We'll have Bailey, Howard, and Poe in the lineup, but not much in the rotation. Nick Williams is looking to be the fourth guy unless Nunez-Roches steps up.

Mike DeVito announces his retirement from the NFL

Free agent defensive end Mike DeVito, who played the last three seasons with the Chiefs, announced his retirement on Monday.

DeVito, 31, tweeted this:

The last lesson I learned on this journey didn’t come from football but instead from my wife Jessie and my son Rocco. The last lesson is vitally important but its application is very difficult. This last lesson is the reason why I have made the decision to move on from football. It is this; there are more important things in life than football. As hard as it is to say goodbye to the game that has made me the man I am, I cannot wait for the second half of this journey through life, loving Jessie more and more every day and watching my son Rocco start a journey of his own.

I want to thank the New York Jets, the Kansas City Chiefs and all the amazing people I have met throughout my career. To all my family, friends, and fans, thank you for making an average player feel like a hall of famer. And to the game of football, thank you for the past 18 years, all the memories, and the lessons that will continue to serve me for the rest of my life.

DeVito had three sacks and 19 tackles in 2015 for the Chiefs after missing all but the first game the previous season because of a torn Achilles’ tendon. He made his debut with the Jets in 2007.

He named his son Rocco? Damn...Rocco DeVito.

Sounds like a guy from Jersey that pays a visit to customers who are late on their bill to the "boss".

If not for steroids, I kind of think that Devito would have been one of the league's biggest stars. You look at him and it's clear that he's not a 'roid freak. He's just a natural behemoth, not like a lot of other guys today.

To hell with Mike DeVito I say! He sat too close to the TV, chewed with his mouth open at the dinner table and wouldn't go to bed on time. May a honey badger sprout from his anus while he's sleeping!

Best of luck to Mr DeVito; very good football player.

And yes, this might lend more credence to the selection of a DL with our first pick.

I'm not saying I'm opposed to going DL in round 1 but how in any way does this make it more likely?

The dude was playing like 15 snaps a game last year. We have 2 interior DL on the field for most of the game, and we have 3 capable, proven studs. It's not any more of a need because of Devito retiring.

Exactly.

And he wasn't exactly playing a skilled game out there when he was in - he was a comically strong run-stuffer. Williams and Nunez-Roches have the body to be able to do that and with some time in the system they appear to have made some strides mentally as well.

There's no reason that one or both of those guys couldn't fill the rotational lineman role that DeVito filled.

It's like saying that losing Jeff Allen means we need to take Whitehair in the first round. Well sure, it may change up the calculus a bit but not immeasurably. There are still larger needs and almost certainly better value picks that will be there for us at 28; no need to reach for a backup DE.

In a deep draft for a position, why would you take a guy in the first round, especially when there is zero need for it in your starting lineup for at least the next two seasons?

DL is strong in the draft this year, Devito might have lost his job anyway.

Losing that 3rd is what hurts, we need it back

We need CB,WR,DL,LB,OL depth and without the 3rd is difficult to fill all our needs.

We didn't lose it. It was stolen.

But yeah, it hurts to not have it. Did the appeal already get rejected, or is Goodell waiting to see whether New England or Denver wants the pick?

Fuck taking a first round DL. I'm tired of using first round picks for depth (Ford) or who are developmental (Fisher). First round picks should be ready to start unless you have no holes. We currently have big holes like at WR or CB. This system of drafting 1st round picks to replace departing talent is fucking stupid. You're letting proven, often pro bowl talent walk and replacing them with unknowns while we still ignore positions like wide receiver. Drafting a DL to let Poe walk is fucking ignorant.

If someone is able to listen to it, please post some tidbits...
