View Full Version : Life Getting my car fixed after a fender bender.

So, it's happened: 16 years of driving and I've had my first fender bender. It wasn't my fault; the girl behind me wasn't paying attention, it was raining out and she didn't brake in time.

The damage appears minimal, but it's a 2 year old car so I'm fairly certain repairs are going to be quite costly for them. Her father spoke with me on her phone and requested to pay out of pocket. He was cordial enough, so I'm not out to screw anyone over; I just want my car fixed.

The police gave us a case number, I filed a report with my insurance, but here are my questions:

My car is under warranty still. Do I go to the dealership to ensure OEM parts?

How can their insurance company, should the bill be to high for him to pay, try to screw me over?

Anything else I should be aware of before I begin this process?

watch out for after-market muffler bearings they might try to install.
be sure to get OEM.

I worked in a body shop years ago and they can get OEM parts for any vehicle. Avoid any body panels that aren't OEM (Asian made) most don't fit well or maybe they got better.

If you doubt the shop at their word it's probably time to take it somewhere else.

I haven't gone to a shop yet. That is why I would prefer to deal with the dealership. Just trying to figure out what is best.

Is their insurance required to pay out at the shop of my choosing, or will they only pay out to a shop of their choice?

Can you post a pic of the damage? I would be happy to give you my advice but the damage will make a difference.

It's because of unfortunate incidents like this I choose to buy used cars. When crap happens, it won't bother me as much as the time I had a 3 year old car that got dinged like your car. My insurance is cheaper, the car is devaluing slowly, gas mileage is still great, and I have a mechanic that owns his own shop and charges only $20/hr.

Typically, insurance companies have shops that they contract with so it's up to you to stay in contact with them and demand your car deserves OEM parts. Be nice, friendly, and politely ask for a list of parts that they have ordered. Run this by with an official body shop from your car manufacturer for advice. That's all you can really do and will likely have to be more patient than a standard repair

Looks like the rear bumper cover and the insert. Paint matching should be fairly easy due to the color.

Find a reputable shop and have them use oe parts. That's an easy fix. I wouldn't make the guy pay dealer labor rates for that simple of a job.

Oh trust me, I heard the tires screeching and after a while of her not stopping I knew I was getting hit. It was depressing. I was expecting to get out and to have my trunk caved in. There is nothing quite like knowing your in for it with no way out.

Yea, like I said, it was pretty minor. I just don't want to have to invest a shit ton of time finding the right shop to do it though. I'm doing enough for him to keep the claim off his record. I'm just more concerned that the bumper is one whole part and could cost a pretty penny.

Yeah the parts low dollar but shop rate on disassembly/assembly and paint probably isn't. Plus who knows what they will find when the pull the cover off? But from your pics it looks like it was a low impact hit.

That's why I went ahead with the report to my insurance, just in case. It wasn't a report from the police it is an official exchange of information, or some shit like that. There is no blame given in it, but I have the officers badge and name in the event it goes south.

I just tend to get myself overly concerned, and as a result it causes me to not overlook anything.

It felt and sounded a lot worse than what it looked like. I was shocked/relieved to see such minimal damage. The officer was parked in the lot right beside our collision and he didn't hear it at all.

On almost all parts, their insurance carrier doesn't owe you for OEM parts unless your car is under a certain amt of miles. So there is that. But I don't know why people care if most parts are OEM or not as long as they fit. Some parts definitely need to be OEM, depending on your state. I would obtain 3 estimates, and just try to get them to pay you cash in lieu for the highest one, and then go repair it at the lower priced one. The body shop will likely put a bunch of garbage on there they know they don't need, and the insurance co will likely negotiate it down quite a bit but you'll still probably make money.

When my car got wacked, I went to Eveland Brothers (who charges out the effing wazzu) and I had two other bids. It was like $900, $1050 and Eveland Brothers was like $2300. Their insurance co paid me $2150 and I made over $1,000.

That's all I remember.

Insurance companies pay refinish and body rates based on area average. They have set rates. Generally shop rates are higher..thats the first thing that gets cut..then stuff like tint, color sand and buff especially on a bumper...flex..hazardous waste..maybe additional damage underneath to the absorber but that will probably be handled as a supplement. Hell..I can write an estimate based on those photos.

Buy a new rear bumper cover/diffuser online. Take it to a body shop and get it painted on your own. My guess is $1200 after shipping for the bumper cover and $800 for the paint. Sell your old dented bumper cover on a veloster forum where someone handy can bondo and paint it.

Seriously - if you do a little leg work yourself, you can make a tidy profit on this.

Here you go man.

$399 and free shipping. It looks fine to me.

It would be an easy install yourself. Go get a quote from a body shop, get the money from the guy, fix it yourself, then profit. (and you don't have to report it to anyone's insurance). These bumper covers just take a couple of screws and they just clip in and out.
