View Full Version : Computers Why, fn f5? WHY?

I was giving a presentation today offsite, and I hooked up to their projector. I hadn't done that in a while and had to try a couple of times to find the fn f8 key to send the presentation to the projector.

Once I did, it popped up on the screen and all was well ... until I tried to open the presentation. My touchpad wouldn't work and the mouse was frozen. I tried restarting and everything else in the book, and no luck. I had to borrow someone's laptop and miraculously had put my presentation on a flash drive in my pocket five minutes before I went into the room, "just in case".

I gave the presentation, and on the train ride home was trying to figure out what had happened. Apparently when I was trying to hook up the computer with the projector, I had hit fn f5 as I fumbled around trying to find fn f8.

Fn f5 freezes your touchpad and mouse on my computer. It does nothing else. It just makes your touchpad and mouse not work.

Why?

Why is there such a thing on my computer? Why do I have a key combo that basically breaks the most single critical control that I have? There's no reason for this. It exists only to humiliate me in public. Is there another key combo that makes the screen fall off? Is there a key combo that makes the space bar not work? THERE'S NO REASON FOR THIS! I WAS TRYING TO INSTILL A SENSE OF AWE INTO THESE PEOPLE AND NOW I LOOK LIKE A TECHMORONIC IDIOT!

Hit the CTRL, ALT and an arrow key at the same time. Makes screen upside down or sideways. Did that at work and freaked out for awhile.

Back in the day, fn f5 would reformat your hard drive. Since that option was unpopular, they had to replace it with something.

If you post that, I think you also need to post the antidote.

On my first computer, you had to manually enter codes into the operating system to create graphics. Buried deep in the instruction manual in big capital letters were the words, "Never insert [x number] into location [y number]". Apparently it literally killed the computer, and there was no protection at all against doing it.

cntl panel + Display + settings = it's somewhere there - perhaps 'appearance' is the tab - If this ever happens - PM me.

Every time you hit the F5 key, someone is murdered in St. Louis.

Holy shit, I wonder how many people I've accidentally killed while drunk computing.

It's because you voted for Tootsie Rolls over Skittles in the candy contest. Karma wins.

1. The ctrl + alt + arrow does not work for every display. You have to have the proper display drivers for that to work.

2. The fn f5 thing is because a lot of people use external mice with their laptops and when you are typing a lot of times your wrists hit the touchpad causing unwanted moving and clicking of the mouse. Instead of dealing with that headache they just make it so you can disable it easily and quickly.

I thought f5 refreshed the page? This isnt why I don't have a laptop, but I'll add it to my list.

f5 does refresh the page. However fn(function) + f5 on some laptops turns off the touchpad.

THis is correct.

Also my fav. Office Mouse prank is the mini post-it under the external mouse - preventing the laser from reading anything - no one checks it either

Find your router and unplug it for 10 seconds. Plug it back in, wait for it to boot up, and that should fix the issue.
