Today's matchup pits the Chiefs' farm system against the only AFC West team that has ever won an NFC championship. It's the San Francisco 49ers versus the Seattle Seahawks. Let's take a look.

The Seahawks have only been around for 40 years, so I'll adjust for percent of time period.

San Francisco

Joe Montana - 10 seasons (20% of time period)
Steve Young - 8 (16% of time period)
John Brodie - 7 (led team for 12, but only 7 since 1966) (14% of time period)
Alex Smith - 5 (10% of time period)
Jeff Garcia - 5 (10% of time period)
Colin Kaepernick - 3 (6% of time period)
Steve Deberg - 3 (6% of time period)
Jim Plunkett - 2 (4% of time period)
Blaine Gabbert - 1 (and current starter) (2% of time period)r)
Shaun Hill - 1 (2% of time period)
Trent Dilfer - 1 (2% of time period)
Tim Rattay - 1 (2% of time period)
Norm Snead - 1 (2% of time period)
Tom Owen - 1 (2% of time period)
Steve Spurrier - 1 (2% of time period)

They produced 18 pro bowls, led by Joe Montana and Steve Young with 7 each.

Seattle

Matt Hasselbeck - 9 (23% of time period)
Dave Krieg - 9 (23% of time period)
Jim Zorn - 7 (18% of time period)
Russell Wilson - 4 (and current starter) (10% of time period)
Rick Mirer - 3 (8% of time period)
Jon Kitna - 2 (5% of time period)
Warren Moon - 2 (5% of time period)
Tarvaris Jackson - 1 (3% of time period)
Seneca Wallace - 1 (3% of time period)
John Friesz - 1 (3% of time period)
Stan Gelbaugh - 1 (3% of time period)

They produced 10 pro bowls (scales up to 13 over 50 years), led by a three-way tie of Dave Krieg, Matt Hasselbeck, and Russell Wilson with 3 each.

My thoughts:

The Seahawks are actually reasonably solid, or at least stable. They've had several quarterbacks who weren't superstars, but they could run a team. I rated them average.

The 49ers are pretty darn stable. They had decent stability for 35 of the past 50 years with QBs ranging from decent to Hall of Fame, and mostly Hall of Fame. They may have had the fewest disaster years at QB of any team we've seen so far. It's hard to believe that they've never won a Super Bowl. (Just seeing if anyone is reading this.) I would rate the 49ers as very strong.

Thank you.

I read it and that's a shame.

And...there's no such thing as bad publicity.
