Both of your addictions are cool. Never took up golf. Though, I think it is very fun to play for as bad as I am (said every person who casually plays one or two rounds of golf per year). I am sure I will give it a serious shot eventually.

If I may, I'm curious. You decided you wanted to straight up go with opiates or was this the aftermath of a prescribed drug?

For me, it was the aftermath of being handed script after script after script for hydrocodone and klonipin, (one for a back injury, and one for awful panic attacks) and then being told they were fine to take together. Euphoria like you couldn't imagine. I'm damn lucky I'm not dead knowing what I know now. I just thank the Lord I never graduated beyond hydro and the occasional oxycodone.

Some days I still miss it, but I've come a long way to being drug free. I'm not willing to jeopardize that.

Benzo withdrawl was the fucking worst thing I've ever been through, btw. Even coming off a 1mg daily klonipin dose was hell. I don't know how people who take large doses of benzos ever quit.

Anyone with a current/past opiate problem? I find it fascinating to discuss.

Opiate, no. Adderall, somewhat. This past spring semester. I was struggling in calculus big time and needed to get a C in the class in order for my credit to transfer to KU, where it was then a pre-req for a couple classes I was already enrolled in for next fall.

So in April, after I figured out what I needed to do to get a C in the course from my professor, I bought some addy off my friend to pull one all-nighter and catch up on caluclus. Adderall probably isn't the worst thing in the world, but I was addicted to something that I didn't need to be taking. The shit I could pull-off academically while wired on it was amazing. But one all-nighter turned into 9 or 10 in the month of April + finals week in May.

My three calculus test scores from last semester?

72
47
95 - top of the class

Can anyone guess which test I spent 48 hours wired on adderall preparing for? I didn't sleep, when one addy started to wear off.. I just took another one.

I got a C in the class.
At the end of the year, I was definitely becoming dependent on that stuff. Haven't taken any since, however, mainly because summer came and I have no use for it. It's all over college campuses. Very easy to get.

This one me struck me. My main goal, every day, is to show my Management either a success or some sort of visibility that reminds them I know what I'm doing. I get lots of positive feedback, which really drives me.

And it's a great thrill. Great medicine for what ails ya.

I'm on a new gig now and I still use the same formula but this group gives zero feedback. Unless you ****ed up. It's very disheartening for me. I don't give 110% anymore.

Quality, timely feedback is so important. Lots of managers don't know this; they often ignore high performers because they don't think they need it. Sad, really.

Caffeine withdrawal is a b****. I tried giving up caffeine once and it was almost impossible in fact it became impossible. Had a couple of pretty bad headaches the first few days and I can work my way down from them. Then about a week later I got nauseous and thought I was getting sick. Found an article that said it was caffeine withdrawal. My wife also said that I was too grumpy and that I needed caffeine. Bought me a 20 oz dew. So she is the enabler.

Yeah, one of my fave things about doing the work I do (remodeling work) is seeing people happy with the finished product I give them. Having them call or text after completing a job to say they are very happy with the way the job turned out is second only to a monetary showing of their happiness.

Think about how many people today are addicted to their f******* phones, or facebook.

It will become an epidemic.
I see kids that go into withdrawal if they do not look at their phones.
Good article today in the MPLS paper (spoiler to keep post short)

School's out. Now, for a summer before a mind-dimming smartphone.

Kids will spend more time interacting with electronic devices than on any other activity besides sleep, and they'll be the worse for it — and they won't let go unless you make them.
By Thomas Johnson JUNE 18, 2016 — 9:40PM

As a teacher in the Minneapolis School District, I’ve dreaded summer vacation. I know my students well, and I know that for many, the summer will be spent in the pallid digital haze of the smartphone or video game. In other words, I dread the negative effects on their young minds from spending most of their free time staring passively at a screen rather than engaging in the real world.

The stakes are high, because their behaviors, what they habitually do, physically alter the inside of their brains. In an eye-opening study, the Journal of the American Medical Association says, “Exposure to excessive screen time has been associated with a variety of negative outcomes for children.” This includes problems with attention, learning, lower academic performance, obesity and negative behavior.

I could cite a lot of disturbing research on this issue, including how violent video games drain kids of their capacity for empathy, but let’s just talk about what we all see, and let’s acknowledge how uneasy it makes us.

Smartphones dominate our children’s lives, and they are a blight in the classroom. I have a ban on electronics in my classroom, but I see students who begin to twitch and fidget within seconds of putting their smartphones aside, because they can’t resist them. They simply do not have the mental strength to resist picking them up to begin gazing, clicking and swiping. Every two or three minutes when they look at that smartphone again, their attention is completely lost to everything around them, and their minds can never fully engage. This is not some silly teen fad. There is an element of desperation in their constant interaction with these devices as if in need of some profound emotional comfort. I’m not kidding; it’s a bit disturbing to witness.

I’m an English teacher, and I try to teach my students how to engage with complicated texts on a deeper level. It requires concentration. The mind needs uninterrupted focus to wrangle with higher-order concepts. As adults, we’ve all probably had the experience of chewing on a hard intellectual problem for a while until we arrive at that “eureka!” moment. I try to create lesson plans that manufacture those moments for my students, but smartphones are my enemy. During a lesson, students are constantly sneaking glances, and their concentration is destroyed.

To state the obvious, teens are easily distracted to begin with, but the digital distractions are more pronounced, more disruptive and more destructive to their intellectual processing. Some of our nation’s top engineers — brilliant people from elite universities and Silicon Valley — are working tirelessly everyday to figure out how to distract your child through software that pings and buzzes and flashes. Our children don’t stand a chance.

You can bet I’ve confiscated many phones over the years, and the reactions from many of my students are shocking. They get angry. Red-in-the-face anger. Some will look me in the eyes and with a threat on their tongues say, “You don’t touch my phone.” It always reminds me of when we took away my daughter’s pacifier when she was a baby. She howled at the loss of her pacifier, and I can’t help but think that smartphones are infantilizing teenagers in a similar way.

I’ve heard horror stories from my students who have seen brothers smash TV sets when their parents demand that they stop playing video games or who have spent entire weekends — sometimes 30 to 40 hours straight — playing video games. Teenagers can’t handle it. They don’t see how manipulated they are by the technology. When you attempt to separate them from their devices, they become surly and panicked and lash out at you, which is an indication of how deeply the tentacles of technology have infected their brains.

I’m calling on all parents to do four things:

• Confiscate phones and laptops at, ideally, 9 p.m., but certainly no later than 10 p.m. Nighttime is the most dangerous time for kids and their use of electronics. If they tell you they don’t use them at night, they are lying. Be firm. Do not back down. I am psychically sending you strength right now, because kids who are especially addicted to electronics will fight you on this. Be prepared for this to be a siege that may take a few days. Have a plan to outsmart them before you take your stand.

• Have an electronics-free period of every day.

• Model restraint with your own electronics usage. I only use my smartphone as a tool. Unless we are FaceTiming with grandma or getting driving directions, for instance, I put the device away.

• Have an electronics vacation. Just spend some designated time — three days, a week, whatever — without electronics. It is liberating.

The pervasive use of smartphones in our society is a relatively recent phenomenon. If you want to see the early indications of what smartphones, in particular, are doing to our children, look how closely the trends for increased smartphone use correlate with the decline of both ACT and SAT scores. I can’t draw a causal relationship between these trends, but as a teacher interacting with hundreds of teenagers on a daily basis, let’s just say I have my suspicions.

So, yes, I’ve dreaded summer. I went into teaching because I care about children. I want them to lead fulfilling lives, and I want them to contribute in positive ways to society. But I know that in the fall I have to face students who have averaged more than 40 hours per week interacting with electronics, smartphones and video games, “more time than they spend in any other single activity except sleep,” according to the JAMA article.

As a teacher, I can see firsthand the damage technology is inflicting on our children. This is no small issue, and as a society, since this issue is so new, we are just beginning to recognize it. As a parent, for the sake of my kids, I can’t afford to wait.

I'm the same way.

I go to the gym all the time but I don't even like it.

I play video games maybe 2 hours per week. I don't watch television outside of live sports..

Ah, as I was typing I figured it out- NFL football. Every Sunday, all Sunday. I watch. Then I watch on Monday and then I watch in Thursday. Between time I'm constantly on NFL.com and Chiefsplanet discussing it.

I've literally quit jobs because they wouldn't allow me to have Sundays off.

Tomatoes, salsa, specifically.

I had a stomach ailment a few years back in which I had to take a PrevPac and go six months without caffeine, alcohol, citrus and tomatoes.

I don't drink sugary soft drinks, ever, so that was easy. I don't drink coffee but I do drink iced tea. That was kind of tough at first. Dropping alcohol? No problem. Sometimes I drank club soda but most of the time I stuck with water.

But what was killing me, I mean, absolutely killing me was no tomatoes.

I make salsa and purchase salsa from the local Mexican marts. Whether it's homemade pico, chipotle or molcajete salsa, I put it on nearly everything, from scrambled eggs to, of course, tacos, burritos, grilled fish, in black beans & rice and LOVE chips and salsa. I also put grape tomatoes in my salads and tomatoes on the occasional deli or chicken sandwich and burgers. Cholula on a breakfast burrito is a must, otherwise, why eat a breakfast burrito?

No tomatoes was the most difficult thing I've ever had to stop. Fortunately (or unfortunately), none of the above were causing the issue so after six months, it was business as usual.

Thankfully.

I don't know how people function without caffiene, no matter how much rest you've had.
I have a can of coke once every 10 or so days, but coffee is a daily thing for me.

Um, maybe I'll add myself to that list as well. My wife calls me a tomato slut.

I grow my own tomatoes most of the year (3 different varieties this year). I eat salsa every day on something and make my own. I have a salad every day and eat grape/cherry tomatoes on it every time. Sometimes after a salad I'll just slice a tomato and eat it as well. I top any sandwich and burger with a tomato. I love having Spicy V8 juice in a glass while watching TV at night. I love making Blood Maria's and Micheladas, extra heavy on the tomato juice.

I have a friend at work who cannot eat tomatoes due to a disease. I honestly don't think I could do it.

Long story short; their economy is agriculture so this law was put into place some time ago to protect the industry. So no cutting into that as it would sink their economy. They raid gardens worse than illegal pot grows here. Their shortage of Avocado's is about to trigger a gang war in the black market.

I must be lucky then, I found physical caffeine withdrawals to be very mild. Only headaches for the 1st few days then I was fine except for just being normal and tired. I was drinking 3 monster energy drinks a day at one point, which is about 750mgs of caffeine per day. One day I just decided to quit as itappeared to be negatively effecting my kidneys per blood tests, so I just stopped cold turkey and didn't have one for 2 months. Mentally, had much more "want to" withdrawals but not anything will power couldnt take care of.

MASH for me. For many years it was on at 10:30 every night around here. Although, when I was a kid it was Johnny Carson. Didn't have much supervision when I was growing up so pretty much every night since I was 5 or 6 I would stay up late and fall asleep watching the Tonight Show. I have a real hard time going to sleep without some background noise. Not just any noise, it has to be voices, not too loud , not too quite. Most TV shows will do but I think the familiarity of MASH is why it works best.

Oh yea, being left alone with nothing but my own thoughts makes it real hard to fall asleep. My mind just goes and goes and goes.

I've had it tested and for the most part my hearing is normal other than a few frequencies. I never asked about the whine because it's always been there. It's kind of loud if I sit and listen to it (kind of like ringing ears after a rock concert), but again it's really easy to tune out, especially if there's any other noise present.

The weird thing is that I actively avoid noise. I've heard that it can happen if you're around loud noise a lot, but I've never had a lot of exposure to loud noise.

Definitely. My generation especially. So many idiots blasting their earbuds. We tested our class in graduate school and a good 10/40 people were already showing signs of high frequency hearing loss which is common with listening to music too loud. If other people can hear your music, it's too loud.

I can't stand the sound of earbuds. Even though I look like a dinosaur, if I'm listen to music on a portable device, I use mini-headphones.

My ears are my life.

As our mine!

I like headphones as well but too bulky at the gym, so I use earbuds there. I keep the volume very low.

Glad you are looking out for your ears. Too many people take their hearing for granted until it's too late.

Be careful with earbuds while jogging. The SPL of those things can be devastating and definitely can cause hearing damage.

I kind of worry about that, because I spend about 3 or 4 hours a week running with those things. I try to keep it turned down to a reasonable level, but even at a reasonable level it feels like that's noise right on my eardrums.

Be very, very careful.

My occupation is much different than yours but I enjoy the silence.

Some of my best ideas come when I'm jogging or biking, which for me, is extremely relaxing despite the physical aspect.

I compose and produce music for a living. While I could always compose with poor hearing, I wouldn't be able to mix, especially a 100 piece orchestra with heavy guitars and sound design synths and other crazy sounds.

I take every precaution and I'm glad you're doing it as well.

The weird thing is that I don't know if I have it or if it's normal. If I'm sitting alone and it's reasonably quiet, I just hear a high-pitched whine. It's quite noticeable if I think about it, but I can tune it out without any effort. Is that tinnitus or is that just normal ears?

Are you certain someone isn't following you with a small, high-pitched noise machine?

It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you.

Aftermath of prescribed pills

Were you aware of the potential for addiction as you continued your use? I'm not judging you, I'm just curious about what you were thinking as the addiction developed?

Also, at some point did you have to start lying to your doctor or buying on the black market to feed your habit?

I thought it would be coffee. Have to have 4 cups every morning black and strong Cafe Verona from Starbucks that I make here. BUT, since I had to think too long about it this being it, I suddenly realized my addiction is really thinking.

Here's a weird one. I have a hard time going to sleep in silence. I started listening to music or talk with earbuds or a pillow speaker many years ago so I wouldn't have to hear whatever sitcom my wife would watch when she went to bed. Now the wife's gone but I can't go back to silence. Lately I've listened to podcasts at bedtime but I usually fall asleep so fast I never remember what was said the next morning.

I have this problem as well.

Hang in there Buck. Everyone has their own motivation for quitting. I'm nearing two weeks without a dip, after a can a day habit for awhile, and dipping overall since 1996. For me personally I just literally added up all the transactions from my local convenience store and I was spending $96/mo on chew on the low end. Something just snapped in my head and I said fuck this, and just didn't buy anymore when I ran out of it.

It was a bitch the first few days, but now I find myself not even thinking about it all all. And if I do, it's only for a few moments then I'm easily off to something else in my mind.

Good luck .

Ok I found mine.

I have to sleep with a fan, or white noise (99.9% fan). Which usually means I take a fan with me when we travel. At home it's a huge, loud, thundering box fan. I CANNOT sleep without white noise.

I thought I was the only one that couldn't sleep without a fan. It started in the 60's growing up in Florida. We didn't have A/C until I was about 16, we had one of those attic fans that sucks air up into the attic. It makes a ton of noise. I've had a fan most of my life, been married 26 years and my wife is hooked also.

About ten years ago we went to Myrtle Beach and stayed at somebody's house and they didn't have a fan, I had to go to Walmart and buy a fan to have while we were there. Now I always take a fan unless we're staying in a motel that I know has one of those A/C units below the front window.

The worse time was when I was in the Army, but then I was either too tired to stay awake or too drunk. When I was in Korea we had the doors and windows open all the time on our quonset hut so I had a mosquito net on my bed. When the weather got cold I was the only one that still had their mosquito net on their bed. I got use to it and couldn't sleep without that net. I think that was my replacement for a fan.

At first, no. It was quite a long journey to get to where I was fully dependent on them. It just kind of happened over the course of several years. One day realized I was on the hook. But I'm off now and never felt better.

There were several times though that I had to buy from the black market (aka a couple buddies got them for me) whenever I ran out early or whatever.
